2006 M5 or 2006 Z06, which would you rather have?

I would probably go for the vette, but that is a hard choice. Having owned a bimmer in the past, I can assure you they depreciate very fast. Something to consider since the Z06 will probably do better in that area. Either one would make a killer ride-you looking?
Maybe we could get a group discount on some Z06s

I would say Z06 in yellow to match the 69! :)

The M5. It will cost $100G. 500 horses and rear seats. Can not beat that.

I prefer my E55. How could you not consider the E55 when talking about the M5???? It's bigger in cargo and people space than the M5 and it's quicker. They are all nice cars, I just like what I drive better.

I'm not sure how long ago you owned a bimmer but, the resale value is better than any late model Vette. They are considerably better if your talking about the M models. I just sold my 2003 M3. I had the car for two years and the car cost me 7k to drive. No late model Vette can say that.

It was a 735i in 1988. Then in 1990,during a divorce naturally, I could not give it away. Still stings when I think about it and has kept me from looking at BMW again even though I loved the car. I know what you are saying about the regular vettes but I think the c-6/Z06 with all the improvements will hold its value(not some adm but true msrp) well for a while at least.
No new vehicle is a good investment now days but the vette is about 30K cheaper to start with so even if they depricate at the same rate, the bimmer still have cost more to own-right?
Then again, who uses that much logic when buying something you really want?

I understand what you're saying but your assuming the Vette is going to start retaining it's value at the same level of the M5. Hasn't happend before and it want happen now. Some of us have to justify this all. If I didn't justify it I would never be able to buy anything. My wife would never let me.:naughty:

I heard that!Melinda(my better half) is sick on me "justifing" all these cars I own now.If I ever don't make money on one, I have had it. That is the reason I don't sell many of them.
If the M series holds it's value like yours did, then you are right, it is the better choice from a depreciation stand point. I assumed from my previous deal and we all know about assumming!
I still think for the difference in cost, my vote stays with the vette!
If you are right about the vette, I think I will wait another year and buy one someone else has taken the hit on. :icon996:

Derrick, I like the E55 also. I have an S55, just curious on the M5 and Z06. I'm not in love with the new BMW body styles, its just Ok for me.
How is the E55 compared to the M3 you had?

///M5 !!!!
I get the feeling Stuart won't be too concerned with depreciation, but there is no way an e60 M5 will be losing value any time soon. But I must say, if I was in the market for this type of car right now (who am I kidding- I'm 20 :fingersx: ) I would be all over the M6.

Same drivetrain as the 5er, but lighter (it has a carbon fiber roof ala the M3 CSL) and faster. My dad has an '84 M6 that he imported brand new and to this date it has 7,000 miles on it! It's really a beautiful car. I'm tyring to bend his arm to add a new M6 to the collection...but I won't hold my breath. :slap:
Oh, and Stuart, I saw in PHR that you're an optometrist. My dad is an ophthalmologist. Small world.

I just got the E55 so not a lot of seat time yet. It's hard to compare the two. I love the M3 because it is smaller and a lot more agile but, the E55 has so much more power, room and comfort. The M3 you could throw around a lot and it was very controllable, whereas the E just doesn't give you that feel. That's the sacrifice you make when you need four doors. I do love the E55 more than my M3! Smooth ride, all that luxury and 516ft lbs of torque. What's not to love!

Z06 or M5? That's a tough question for me since I am a musclecar fan and a BMW technician by trade. The Z06 will definitly be a faster car, it's lighter and has a good deal more torque than the M5. Personally, I love driving the last generation (E39) M5 (400hp V8, 6 speed and rear wheel drive). I'm not really a fan of the new body style, but it's hard to argue with a 500hp, 8000+ rpm V10 and a 7 speed formula 1 style gearbox. I do have to add that BMWs have one of the highest resale values of all car lines, especially the 3 series and ///M cars. But.......
I'd still probably take the Z06.

I think bmws have the better handling and ride so M5 it would be...but all cars mentioned are awesome in their own way...thats why you pay the big bucks ...for that unique look hehe

What about the CTS-V? (or VR if available yet?)
I would take it over the M5 if I had a choice. How often to you see a fire breathing, Kick @ss caddy on the streets? BMW-M's, you can't drive accross down without running into at least 2!
just my 2 cents

hmmm, I'd like it to be me having that dilemma, but I think I'd go for the m5 (or M6) or E55 car wise, I just have this thing about german quality being better, more raffinated.dont ask why, maybe its just something in my head.
But money wise $30K to spend on something else are hard to beat and I'd get a new Z-06 AND a three year old 540 wagon or something.

This may be a decision maker. ZO6s right now are already being offered at 10 k to 20 K over sticker. We expect to see $100,000 at the auction for the first few months of the cars release, and well north of sticker for a year or so.
And it has proven in the past to be suicide to pay more then sticker for anything, ask my buddy with one of the first ZR1s he paid $90 K for.
As far as depreciation, Cars like the ZO6 do pretty well, look at ZR1s, clean late year ZRs with good miles and desirable colors still do the money. but if you pay more then sticker, you are in real trouble.
Then again, how much value is there in having the first on your block? In my neighborhood it means nothing, but if you live next to the Jones?

I think I read a comparison in car and driver and the caddy cts vr? stacked up pretty good against all the other cars including the m-5. I think it will be in the low 12's high 11's. I checked one of these out and they are really well engineered and are quite the sleeper. But between the m-5 and z06 even my bmw buddies tell me they would take the vette. Its just too damn cheap. You cant get much more car for the money than a vette. I can buy a 01-02 z06 for as low as $30,000. It really is unbelievable

Z06 unless I need to move around more than 2 people in it.. then a M5.. well actually I would prefer a M6 but that's just me :)
A better comparison would be between a Z06 and a Viper or between a CTS-V and a M5..

I would have to say the M5. Can't put kids in a Z06. Plus fun runs at the auto-x are alot more fun with a back seat full of people.

Can't be beat in my book. However, I am a bit biased toward BMW handling and road feel(this is my camaro's stablemate). New BMW's don't look good to me, and at best they are alright. BMW is also consistently rated #1 for resale across the board. I think the new M5 is ugly but technologically brilliant so in that case I would have to go with a car that I would actually be turning around to admire when I got out and that would have to be the Z06.

Im 18 so you might dismiss my opinion, but Ive driven a c5 z06, and a c6, then also an e39 m5 and an 05 540i sport, and from what I know the new m5 will be a better buy than the z06, but than again it's all on what you want. My dad's the first one in our area getting a new m5, than a year later he'll be the first with a new m6, so when we get the m5 I'll be sure to post about it. Anyone see the e90 m3? Now THAT is the car I want, it'll have the 394hp engine from the e39 m5. Offered with 6 speed and SMGII, I'm thinking that cars gonna rock.

Well as a Norweagian i would take the vette any day.BMW`s are everywhere here. But then again a vette in norway will set you back insane amounts of money i would guess 150.000 dollars here. I dont think they even sell M5 here but a M3 is about 135.000 dollars here.
man i wish i lived in the US i would own 2 vette 3 Ferraris one H2 and one Lambourghini.
You get tha cars so damn cheap :(
and your gas is damn cheap too. Only good we have is 98 Octane from the pumps but at 1,5 dollars per liter.....

If you are looking at around $100K budget, I'd get a CTS-V and put a Magna Charger on it. That would be good for around 450 rwhp and equal torque. $55K invested.
Then use that $45K and buy a regular C6 and modify it to kick the new Z06's butt.
Between the BMW and Vette, I'd go Z06 all day long unless I had to have back seats.

Stuart, my dad's practice is in Ft.Worth. He's a cornea specialist. He does corneal transplants, blepharoplasty, cataract surgery, and combined cases with some local glaucoma people. My goal is to be an ophthalmologist as well - just not for humans. :naughty: Veterinary ophthalmologists get payed twice as much as my father does to do a cataract on a human being, and there's no managed care or malpractice to deal with. All the perks of ophthalmology (the eye fascinates me) with none of the crap of current medicine.

I hate to even mention the CTS in the same sentence as the BMW. The caddy is not in the same class. I don't care if you mod it to 700hp. I had an M3 and M5, drove the CTS and didn't think it was even close.

The CTS-V is very cool, the STS-V will be even better, but I would have to get the M5. P.S. if anyone wants one of these cars let me know. :)

The cts cost only $35,000 the m-5 which cost around $80,000. Have you driven a cts-v or the cts vr. My dad works for gm and the gather lexus's,bmw's,mercedes, caddys and volvos. They get to trash them usually at places like California speedway. lets just say cadillac is briniging something out that whopped all competition and it was considerably less.

You could make a regular C6 as fast as a C6 Z06 but it still would not be a Z06.. unlike the C5's the Z06 will quite a bit different from the standard C6.
I still don't think it's a fair comparison.. a Z06 and a M5 are two totally different cars..

Well if you want to get in for a dollar to dollar comparison. How about a lingenfelter c-5. Used ones are going for around $100,000 right? They run high 9's. By the way I think the new caddy is called the cts vr? All I know is it will be making the same power as the new z06

Mr. Adams,
I know this thread is old but this article has an option that might interest you. It will be out in 07 or 08 but I really like the looks of it especially the suicide rear doors. I think this will be a car you either really like or hate. Lets just hope it don't suffer the same fate as its predecessor. I do feel it would be a great compromise between a M5 and Z06.

Well seeing that I have a 2003 Z06 Hmmmmmmmm I guess I'll go with what I have. Just kidding.
Actually getting my Z06 was a dream come true. First time I test drove one I felt (for the first time in my life) like the car was too much :)
For $49,000 I paid for mine, I feel that the Z06 bang for the buck is the most bad ass performance car around. Zero to 60 in 4 seconds flat, and 12 second quarter right out the box!!!!

Can you put the car seat in the back of theZ06, can you comfortably drive 800 miles straight in a Z06 without going crazy because you are in such tight constraints. Can you sit and be completely at piece with yourself hearing nothing as you drive down the road at 75. The BMW is a four door first class luxury car that can perform very well. The corvette is a sports car that can perform very well. They are two different things. As I said before, I would no doubt get the BMW, but it would be fun to drive the neighbor’s corvette on a Friday night.

Go test drive a cts-v, basically a corvette z06 with all the comforts of a caddy. 14 inch brakes, suede insert interior,6 speed, z06 motor, and You can pick one up for $45,000. They are also alot cheaper to fix than a german car.
