hey guys, i cleaned up, pressure washed, wire wheeled, and painted my gas tank and the gas tank straps. in doing so, i had to remove the cruddy/nasty original gas tank strap "pads"; or maybe they're called "dampeners", i dunno. they're the soft things that stick to gas tank straps to keep the gas tank from rattling and probably moreso to keep the metal straps from cutting into the gas tank.

anyway, anybody know what i could use in place of the padding material? is this something i would have to get at the dealer or can i substitute something for them from home depot?

You can order new ones from a number of places, but they are just thin rubber strips. I used an old bike inner-tube and cut is to shape, works well and was free.

Same here. I cut the inner tube to length, slid it on the straps, bolted up the tank, then cut off the excess inner tube. That way it stays in place while you are juggling the tank and straps, and the rubber is the right size when you are done.
