View Full Version : 69 Camaro Suspension Bind

Ok.
I always search and search before I post , So I'm sorry to go over some of the same info again but ,

My '69 Camaro has some suspension binding.
When parked on level ground , the REAR ride height will be different at times. Sometimes it's higher on the right , sometimes on the left.

So , I was thinking maybe the PolyGraphite Urethane bushings in the the rear spring shackles were binding. ( I still have rubber bushings in the front eyelet of the rear springs )
Maybe the rear springs themselves are binding.
Or maybe the shocks are not releasing completely.

Also , maybe the FRONT control arm PolyGraphite Urethane bushings are binding and thats holding one corner of the nose down.
Thus, keeping the rear pulled up on one side.

I'm also getting what I think is Snap Oversteer at higher speeds in corners. It's not a very good feeling. About halfway into a corner , I suddenly get oversteer.
The car " twitches " and I have to correct the steering to stay in the road .
So , I thought maybe suspension binding may be the root of the problem.

I was gonna start by replacing the Front Upper and Lower Control arm bushings with Del-A-Lum bushings and get rid of the Poly stuff.

And also get rid of the Poly Shackle bushings in the rear leaf springs.
( I've got a Global West Kit with Del-a-lum shackle bushings and spherical bearings for the rear leafsprings )

My question is :
Should I use the Spherical bushing in the Front Eyelet of the Rear leaf spring ?
Will it be too harsh for the street ?
Will it allow the tires to rub the inner fenders when the rear axle tilts ?
Is it not worth it ?

When you replaced the bushings, did you tighten all the nuts & bolts while the suspension was unloaded?
Because that could cause your problems.... they should always be tightened while fully loaded

I did tighten all the control arm and shackle / leafspring fasteners with the car on a drive-on lift.
So , Yes , It was fully loaded.

What I'm trying to do is get rid of the "twitchiness" .
I think suspension bind may be a contributing factor to it.

I'm sure that Del-a-Lum bushings in the front control arms are the way to go.
I'm just not sure about using the CAT5 Spherical bearings in the rear spring eyes because of harshness and longevity on the street.
I've got a set of them ( Global West Part# 115SH )
I know they will eliminate suspension bind , but I was just concerned about ride harshness and whether or not the inside of the rear tire would contact the inner fender.( When the rear springs tilt. )

Global West makes a shackle kit ( Part # 103 SH ) that only includes greaseable Dela-a-Lum bushings for the shackles and front spring eyes.( All 6 positions )
The kit I've got has Del-a-Lum bushings in the upper shackle positions only and spherical bearings for the lower shackle positions and the front spring eyes.

The Cat5 allow freer movement without bind. In some extreme cases like high side load and extreme bump travel this may occur, but those 2 events occurring together are highly unlikely.
