I want to get a gear vendors in the next month, is there any group purchases or any dealers that have them for a little cheaper?

There isn't much profit margin in those... I would not expect to find much discount

Just curious I can never understand why people would spend upward of 3,000 on a gear-vendor unit (and that does not even include the transmission or drive shaft etc) when you can pop in a 6 speed set up for so much less... They are a great product but the price is so high

Some people, like me just don't want sticks. And there are very strong auto's that don't have OD's. Or just add OD to what you already have.

For similar money you could convert to a 4L80E which will probably work better anyways

I have a gear vendor in the chevelle and it is great! You will like the gear splitting the best, over drive is good for highway MPG. I get 16-20 MPH with a fuel injected 468 and 3:70 gear.

I don't want to cut my transmission tunnel. I already have a well built th350 and neal chance converter. I would love to have a stick but don't really feel like going through all the trouble to do it. I've considered other autos but the the only one that will last is a 80e. The gear vendors seems like it will be fun and might help me in the quater too.

Gear vendors really wants their systems sold through installing dealers and as mentioned the markup is pennies.

Has anyone here tried to take a regular Laycock OD unit from, say, a Volvo and make their own GV unit?

While I like my Gear Vendors, I'll admit that I had thought about replacing it with a 4L80e. The cost is very similar once you include the controller for the 4L80e. The thing is that I can have my TH400 rebuilt anywhere several times for what it would cost to have the 4L80e rebuilt just once. Plus the TH400 with the GV unit weighs lesss than the 4L80e and allows me to run a shorter driveshaft that can handle higher RPMs better than a longer driveshaft. At least that's what the company that built and balanced the driveshaft told me.
At the time that I put the car together though, nobody was offering an OD transmission that would live behind over 500ft/lbs of torque, so Gear Vendors was pretty much my only option. The only thing I don't like about it is the harsh engagement and disengagement in manual. I'm constantly retightening fasteners on the rear suspension. But it's a freakin' blast to hit that button when your dead even with someone else for a while and then start to walk away from them! (On the track of course!)
