I saw this car at The GM NAtionals at Carlisle. It is beautiful. I love flared fendered and widebodied cars. Here are some pics I took.

There was a gray '69 Camaro with a huge wing and a '66 Chevelle featured in one of the magazines a while back that had similar build styles.

Once again thank you for the compliment, I greatly appreciate it. I built the car the way I wanted it and it is nice to know that I went in a direction that was admire and respected by others. The car weighs 3,400 with me in it, I am working on cutting off a couple pounds on the car and as well as me.LOL I am not sure if there has been any talks of this but we really need to put together a HPDE event of all our cars. Everytime I go there are really no old Muscle iron on the track, maybe one or two thats it. If this exist point me in the right direction.
The club Amir(Mr. Vengeance) formed has that intent. Check out the Streetfighters club thread. Should be in this forum. Welcome and count me as another huge fan of the car.

No offense to anyone, but talk of track days will far outweigh actual trackdays...but there was a good event at pocono for musclecars and i would certainly do it again...

So far I am just going to HPDE, I believe I have everything worked out so I will countinue with the HPDE and maybe some time trials. I am running a 10.5 spec II plus clutch with a hays steel billet flywheel and a quarter master hydraulic slave cylinder. And unfortunately the car is FAR from street legal. The only thing street legal on the car are the brake lights. Here is a video you car see how loud the car is. http://videos.streetfire.net/video/1964-Pontiac-GTO-RoadRace_196143.htm If I get caught driving this thing on the street I will probably get jail time.lol

That's a very nice car you've built for yourself. Some more seat time and you'll be wringing it out for all it's worth. That track even seemed a bit small for it, tho you did state you were getting used to the car.
Just for ****'s and giggles, it needs a passenger seat and a guy like Ron Fellows to run it out... just for a few laps. I'm sure you're a more than capable driver, if I owned a car with that track potential it'd be a hell of a rush riding shotgun beside a seasoned pro. A guy could probably learn a thing or two from them... Just a pipe dream thought that popped into my head.
I just imagined it on the Ring in Germany.... Now that would be a ride along!
Nice job once again...

Thank you, actually that video was taken when I had about 20 minutes of track time at that track. I actually have a passenger seat that I can put in the car. I have been participating in HPDE events since 1991. Give me a car that I do not care about and you will see a totally different video. That day I was sorting out a brand new carb and everytime I started to get into it the oil started to get really hot. I now have fixed that problem. The one thing I have found out is when you start pushing it on a track when you are not familiar with the course or the car is not 100% stuff like this starts to happen check this video out give it about 1 minute http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=juTZzrR4qSA The day I was at Thunderbolt I guy also totaled his vette. It makes you think that at any point stuff happens.

I hear what your saying Don, getting comfortable with a change in any car can take some time. I look forward to seeing future video's of this car being used to it's potential. I haven't even come close to the potential of my car in a corner, mainly because i'd never do it on a public road and there's just not a decent road course in my neck of the woods. Although there are some autocrosses at the base on the runways I might look into.
You should screw with the straight line guys and run it down the quarter... Just to say you did. A local sprint car racer here ran his car down the strip with a slow rolling start, he ran out of gear but still ran 10 something...
Don't have too much fun with that car!

Actually funny you mentioned the drag racing. I did take the car down the 1/4 mile, I ran it twice. The car ran 13.5 at 115 and 117 mph, both runs my reaction time was .024 second and .022 not bad for a roadracer here is the video http://videos.streetfire.net/video/1964-GTO-Roadrace-car-at_196123.htm also here is a video of Pocono speedway I am still not a 100% but the speed was there 155mph on the back straightaway. I am much more famaliar with this track, been there a lot. You should like this one, here is the video http://videos.streetfire.net/video/1964-Pontiac-GTO-roadrace_127168.htm

Real simple I mailed a picture of my car with $5.00 enclosed asking them to put it in the magazine. Just kidding. I went to a HPDE at Virginia International Raceway and the ride along instructor asked if he could take a picture of the car to show to his friends. I said sure take as many as you want, Well I get an email about a couple days later from him, it turns out one of his freinds was one of the editors of HotRod magazine Matt King. Matt is a road racer and loves road racing cars and wanted to do an article on the car. We talked and I meet him at the PRI show in 2005 and in August 2006 they shot the article at Watkins Glen.

Seriously, I love the GTO and your Mustang Preston but I think Damn True is right, that's what you will get from most people. Never mind that Ford made a zillion Mustang Hardtops and that it was a pretty crappy car in need of some serious attention to get to handle. My donor car for the current build is a Mach 1 and I get it a lot. Hey, not like there is a global shortage of Mach 1's and it was a complete rust revival anyway. Cars are made to be driven, and that's why we read Pro-touring.com, CC, Racecar Engineering etc.!

Hi Preston, first of all I must apologize on making it sound like it was easy getting in Hot Rod, because it was not. It did take a year of emails and phone calls. Both Hot Rod and I wanted it to happen but it took almost a year due to conflicting time schedules, at one point it seem like it would never happen. But then I thought, my intention of building the car was never to get it into a magazine, I just wanted to build a race car. It did not matter if people liked it or not, just the fact that I could do it and try to build it the best that I could and have some fun with it and enjoy it. That is also one of the reason I just don't go out on the track the first time to set a new lap record. I know how long it took to build the car and if I cracked it up rebuilding it would take away from the fun time. I have seen pictures of your car and yes it deserves to be in magazines it is truely unique as there are a lot of unique cars on this site. (I thought I did see your car in some magazine though correct me if I am wrong) The only thing I could think of is Hot Rod wanted the car because I did it with a GTO and the only time that a GTO was built into a road race car was the grey ghost. But once again I built a GTO into a race car was because that was the car I had, if I had a different car most likely that car would of been built into a racecar. At the time Hot Rod was talking about writing the article another very popular magazine emailed me that they were interested in writing an article as well. I guess I did not want to step on anyone's toes so I mentioned to them that Hot Rod was doing an article and I never heard back from that Popular Magazine. I guess they only want first time cars. But the funny thing is that most of these magazines are all under the same company so you would think they would want to show things to their prespective readers. For the last year a swedish car magazine has been contacting me they want to do an article but nothing ever came out of it. So as you can see it was not as easy as I made it sound it did take a lot of work and money as well

Those are some nice links on the bottom fo the axle. How long are those ? And what size tubing are they made of ? Looks pretty beefy, almost like truck arms. And what bellhousing is that ?
Our cars are similar and our philosophy is similar. Although it'd be nice to get in a mag and get some recognition, I didn't build the car for that and I don't intend to go out of my way or preserve the car in a certain state waiting for a magazine to show up. And yeah, after putting 3-4000 hours into these things you definitely want to enjoy it and its no longer about wringing every last 1/4 second out of your lap time. That's what the shifter kart is for !

Thank you, the lower control arms are made out of 2 x 3 inch .120 tubing, they are 44 inches long and yes they are over kill. I have been around a local short track for a couple years and I see how things break so I decide they would weigh a couple more pounds but when you think about it the lower control arms are the only thing that is pushing the car forward and if they would break the car would be destroyed in seconds. The front bushing is a mono ball bushing incased in a sleeved enclosed in the control arm, in case the bushing gives out the control will not drop, the rear bushing is a solid greasable bushing. The rear axle is a ford nine inch rear made by speedway engineering, it has the truck full floater NASCAR hubs and I had them put in 1 degree of negative camber. Then I made all the attachment points including the watts link that I can adjust the height up and down to increase or decrease the rear roll center.
To add to your other statement it would be nice to get into a magazine for regonition, You are absolutely 100% right and you and your car deserves that. However checking out most of the cars that I have seen on this message board and how it sounds like everyone is a really cool car guy, I think that everyone deserves to have an article published on them. At the moment I do not believe there is a magazine truely decicated to the pro-touring community to support this. So I have a couple suggestions I can think of is either someone steps up to create one in ink or we should design a magazine on a website so everyone can get the just deserves. Here is another suggestion when you take your car to a car show, people can vote on it, why not have a show once a year where people can post a couple pictures of their car on this message board and have people vote on it. Now I know everyone is going to vote for their own car but make it available to maybe people outside the message board so you can get a true count. MR.VENGEANCE will like this idea call it the STREETFIGHTER'S AWARD. At least people will have a chance to get their car and their work recognized on more of a national level.
When it comes down to it, the pro-touring community is a very unique club that keeps growing, it is taking a car and displaying that person's taste and creativity in making a car more aggressive for driving.

Thank you Carl. Someone mentioned they wanted to see some build pictures which I have a lot of then. Here are two pictures the first is from 1991. This is when the car was driven on the street, it was not a road race car yet but had enough suspension work done to it that it was ok to drive at HPDE events once I started getting envolved with them. It was great to drive it on the street ,it was a great handling car and I had a lot of fun with it. As you can see back in 1991, I was more into pro-touring when the average person was building a car to go in a straight line. The second picture is the road race car with its skin off. This picture was taken back in 9/2003 at this stage I was getting close to the end but still had some work to do. The frame was complete and the motor would be going in shortly. I made a rolling frame for the body which came in real handy.

Don - thats an amzing build man. Its really amzing that its built by somone that does not have a big racing team and huge multi million dollar budget!
My hats off to you and it looks fun as hell to drive.

Do you have a site for your car or a link to most of the pics? I would like to follow it - and check it out in one location. Iremember another forum that had some stuff - but one spot would be nice.
Maybe you can open a seperate thread on here and put some updates on it :D
Plus the forum has plenty of disk space now - the mods really should take the media restrictions off - it will make the forum more useful - expansion disk is really cheap these days anyway.

Thank you I appreciate that. I checked out your Mustang and I was very impressed, the car is awesome I wish you well in your production of the car. I do have a website it is www.gtoroadracer.com (http://www.gtoroadracer.com) right now it is very basic. I really need help to design the website. I have a lot of pictures and links to put up, but when it comes to web site design and writing it I need alot of help. Here are a couple more pictures you can see from the first one of the frame, it was designed and built in a garage that I did not have a lot of room. If I was building it again in my new garage now it would take 1/3 of the time. The way I designed and built the car the body can be removed and I still can drive the car. The body is suspended on mounts attached to the frame unlike a Nascar that all the panels are welded on.

There is a also a 66 chevelle that runs at pocono, badass car but I dont see it online much...also that grey 69 camaro with the big wing...all similar builds , super cool.
The '69 Camaro with the big wing belongs to Bob Owens.
It was featured in PHR a while back.
Who owns the 66 Chevelle ???

If it's the one I'm thinking about, wasn't it a gray or silver '67 Chevelle? It was featured in Hot Rod or PHR about 5 years ago. It was very similar to Don's GTO in build style, maybe a bit more circle track/Nascar influence though. I'd love to see some pics/info on that car too.
Oh, and I believe this is the Camaro that was referred to above:

I believe it is a 67 Chevelle I met him at Pocono one time back in 2005. My car was almost done and I walked over to let him know that he had oil leaking out underneath his trunk. He looked at me like I had three heads and said "why would there be oil leaking out of my trunk" so I looked under his hood and saw that the car had a dry sump pump and said "It is probably leaking from the oil tank in the trunk", so he popped the trunk and it looked like the oil tanked exploded, there was oil everywhere. From checking the car out the best I could remember it is a stock frame and stock body chevelle with a cage in it. It looks like it has suspension kit on it and a strong motor. From the looks of it he could still drive it on the street. I tried talking shop with him but he really did not know too much of the car some shop built it for him and he just drives it. I was hoping to see him take it back out but he got in his backup car which was a 930 Porsche. It must be nice to have money. I would of just settled for the gold rolex Daytona watch on his wrist.

Yes , that's it !
What magazine / month was that ??
I've been looking through my back issues and haven't run across it yet.
(Correction: I found it , it was January 2005 Hot Rod.)
BTW , Bob Owens' '69 Camaro was on the cover of ,and featured in, the June 2004 Popular Hot Rodding.
I found that issue in my library about an hour ago.
It was also in the July 2004 Hot Rod and the Fall issue of Camaro Performers.
