I would buy one of these in a heartbeat.

I'd even have a building put up on my property to house it and would spend several hours of my day in there making a complete jacka$$ of myself.

If a space shuttle is too pricey, NASA is offering some of its shuttle main engines for anywhere between $400,000 and $800,000, not counting shipping costs.
who's going to be the first one to shove one of those in a Camaro?

excuse my stupidity but is it so that if you get the shuttle and the engine then it could be used to fly around as an airplane??

Uhh...no.
Like mach1stang said, it would just be the most kick a$$ play-fort ever. Just owning something that's been up in outer space and is a part of history would be fantastic enough. Plus there's a little Pro-Touring in every shuttle. Our own Steve68 does the wiring on these bad boys.
I guess it's a good thing I'm not rich. LOL!!!

[Ms. Rapin] TONY RAPIN, YOU ARE NOT PUTTING THAT IN OUR YARD!!!!!! [/Ms. Rapin]
the shuttle is a glider anyway. It's not possible to fly it like an air plane.
That is so cool that you can actually buy one

They call it the "flying brick" because of how fast it falls to earth. They only get one shot to land it. Oddly enough it is not being replaced by another shuttle. NASA is going back to capsules like they did during the Mercury and Apollo programs.
why? I guess having the space station has a lot to do with it. No need for a space bound RV when you have a space bound motel right?

Tony, My son has wanted to be a space shuttle pilot since he was two! I agree, he would be all over that thing! I love to make my kids happy; it is now my only goal in life. That would make a helluva Christmas/playset. Put some sweet swings and slides in the cargo bay and Brandon and Riley would be super stoked! Mayby even some LCDs in the front windows with some in cotpit footage of a shuttle mission playing 24/7!

It enters the Earths atmosphere at MacH 25, It comes through 50,000 feet, a little above comercial jet traffic running about Mach 5 still. That is one helluva BricK,lolol. I think stall speed is around 400 mph? I love the landings in that thing, those are the best pilots n the WorlD, man they are always GreasY and on point!

Thanks Tony,
I keep telling my boss that I want the Tunnel Adapter to put in my backyard for the kids, this goes from the Airlock in the Suttle to the Space Hab/Lab in the Payload Bay,
I also work Payloads, installing the Payload into the Shuttle at the pad and my shop build up all the Payload parts Longerons and Keels to support keeping the the Payload in the Payload Bay,
Another shop part of our dept is FCS, Flight Crew Systems, we stow all the Flight Crews equipment into the crew module, everything from tooth brushes to the EMU's in short the space suits, seen a lot of need stuff in this shop,
Its a neat job! I'll answer question if anybody has any,
The Smithsonian is really pushing for Discovery, they want it bad, Its supposed to go in the new Air and Space Museum at Dullas in DC, hopefully NASA and the others have enough push that Omama won't end my job to take our small budget and put what he thinks is good use, Steve

I would think that working at Kennedy Space Center and/or Cape Canaveral would have to be pretty cool, especially the kind of things that Steve68 does.
So Steve, 2 questions:
1-Did'ja ever make a titanium potato gun that uses rocket fuel?
2-If they don't "sell" them, where will they go? Scrapyard or that big military Airplane storage site in AZ?

Steve,
I'd love to know more about this stuff but I dont know what to ask.
Only Q. that comes into my mind is if you able to buy some outdated parts or things you might need for personal puroses (tootbrushes and such... I mean bolts, scrap parts or wiring or...) or is it all top secret and has to go into the crusher??

no I don't think that will happen, but I think NASA had something to do with the cannon that fires chickens at 747 windscreens for testing,

I doubt anybody would buy one, but you nebver know, They would become static displays, hopfully inside, theres really no bad reason to stop flying them right now, after the Columbia accident, we modded the hell out of them with updates.

Alot of the stuff get scrapped locally our own land fill, some stuff get thrown in the garabge, but parts like ones from Challenger and Columbia come to KSC and go to special areas.
