Depends on what your painting. Convertible, jambs, under hood, engine compartment, under deck lid, underbody, etc. You'll need at least a mixed gallon of color and clear.

I plan on purchasing 5 pints of base for mine, and about a gallon of clear. Painting the entire car except under carriage and bottom of hood, or hood interior parts. Hopefully it will be enough. Keep in mind you have to add other stuff such as hardner and reducers, which you have to add into the overall equivilent. Im sure some of the pro's and other guys that just recently painted theyre cars will chime in.

My 1967 Camaro was just painted and we bought 6 quarts of base and gallon of clear. Camaro body, fenders, doors, hood, door jambs, trunk lid, and other misc parts. The underbody has already been painted. We also paint the back side of the sheet metal parts, it is a good protectant against rust. I seen one guy has posted pints, but he will be short if he buys in pints.

IMO...
Make sure that you take into account the following:
1. Some colors cover better (less coats) than others, and
2. Some paint systems provide better coverage than others.
I recommend that you have this discussion with the local paint distributor you plan to buy the paint from. They can provide many more details about the paint system and color that you plan to use.

Well, my painter has been painting cars for 56 years and his paint jobs last 20 + years. Actually, I asked him that question and he replied that if he need more clear then he can run to the paint store and pick up some.

I just jambed out my '69 and painted the back of the hood and trunk lid and it took exactly 1qt of base and 1 qt of clear. They were Sherwin Williams Ultra 7000 and the coverage was excellent on both. Lesser expensive paints take more coats to cover because they contain less solids. Once the solvents evaporate that is what you're left with on the car, so try to get as good a quality paint as budget will allow.
By the way SW Ultra 7000 base is mixed 1-1 so you really have 2 qts sprayable.
