View Full Version : SC&C/Spohn Adj. PT Rear Swaybar is done!

It`s finally done! 3 years ago we set out to design a rear swaybar for A and G body GM cars that was properly mounted and adjustable. By properly mounted I mean NOT to the lower arms. Mounting them with links to the chassis has many advantages such as reducing non linear binding when the suspension articulates and allowing much higher effective bar rates with smaller dia. (read lighter) bars. We finally have it how we want it with great ground and exhaust clearance and soft/med/firm rates to tune the suspension. They`ll be shipping the first week in January and all the folks who have expressed an interest or put in pre orders will get the first of them. Thanks for being so patient guys and thanks to Spohn Performance for working with us to make this happen. More pics to come. Mark SC&C

How much? If the cost works with my budget add me to the list.

Any pictures of one installed? I want to see where the links mount.

Well, I've been pretty undecided on a rear sway bar untill now! How much? Will there be any kind of package with a front bar to save a little $?

$395 and its well worth it. i dont think mark has any front bars coming out any time soon.

Yep it`s $395. I`ll post some installed pics next week,we have to edit and host them yet. The links mount to the bottom of the same crossmember that mounts the upper arms. Just mount the bar on the axle, swing it up into place, line the links/brackets up with the bottom of the crossmember and drill 4 holes. Bolt the brackets on and you`re done. Install takes about 15mins.
We already offer a selection of matching front bars from both Spohn and Hellwig. The new adj. rear bar opens up a lot of new tuning options. Normally our geometry correcting front end packages make huge front bars unnecessary. They yield flat cornering but inhibit turn in. Now that we can dial in more rear bar rate to balance them out we can get even flatter cornering with quick, crisp turn in with even the largest front bars. More or less a hardcore option for serious cars. :smoke: Mark SC&C

Keep it up Mark, before you know it you will have the G-Body market cornered.
For those of you who dont know Mark, he is a great guy to deal with and the products he sells are OVER tested and WILL work on your cars. He would never sell anything that is half assed.
I will continue to buy from Mark because he stands by his products.
Jeff

PS Sway bar looks killer.

Marcus,

If you need some real world testing done at high elevation, send one my way and I will report back to you.

That looks like a helwig bar?

Marcus:
What is the Diameter of the bar prior to paint, and what is the weight of the complete assembly, and when mounted on the car, is there any interference between it and the Fays Watts linkage?

How will this compare to the HRpartsnstuff bar?

Marcus SC&C
12-29-2008, 09:41 AM
Gary, the bar itself is 7/8" OD. Cool when you consider it can generate as much or more rate than those huge super heavy ATR etc. bars. :)

It serves a different purpose than the HR drag bar. Our Spohn Drag bar would be a batter comparison to the HR unit. They have comparable rates but the Spohn bar has much better heat treating. This ProTouring bar is exactly that, purpose built for performance handling not adapted from a drag race application. The drag bars run outrageous rates because their only job is to make the car launch flat. The PT bar will certainly help with that too but it`s adj. range favors tuning in the handling arena. Marcus:
As these are all suspension component related queries, maybe you can clear all of them up on this thread / post?
Will the SC&C 1 pc frame brace clear a stock location but lowered intercooler on a '86-'87 turbo Buick? If you have a picture taken from directly underneath the cat showing the location of the mounting points I can probably compare the pic with my car.
Will the SC&C / Fay's Watt's linkage clear a Hooker Cat-back system on same?
Any interference between the Fay's Watt's linkage and the new Spohn Pro-Touring adjustable rear sway bar?
Any pictures available yet of the Spohn PT bar as mounted on a G-body car?
Better yet, any pictures available yet of both mounted on a G-body car / or a turbo Buick?
Sorry, Marcus, lots of questions

Marcus - send that stuff to me and I will gladly get the pictures for you! Seriously, I am interested in the answers as well as Gary.

Currently I have the F body 36mm 1LE swaybar up front. Any idea how it will work with that?

Marcus has told me that it will help dial in the large front sway bar (lots of roll stiffness) a lot better than any current rear sway bar. I'm in the same boat using the 36mm front bar.

Gary, the crossbar of the HD GN brace goes directly under the factory swaybar so if the intercooler extends straight down it should be any problem at all.
Honestly I dunno if the watts and PT bar combo will clear Hooker GN exhaust. We don`t have a GN with Hooker exhaust to try it on. If our Monte is any indication the tailpipe on the side running the high side of the watts may need to be modified...or not.
We designed the PT bar to work with the watts so...yes. :)
I`ll post pics of the PT bar mounted and the PT watts combo after the holidays. It looks almost exactly like an axle mounted swaybar. :) There are pics of the watts installed on our site already.

The really big front bars are another reason we designed the PT bar. The giant swaybars are largely used as a bandaid for lousy stock geometry. When we correct that with a Stage 2 or AFX packafe etc. the big bar is now overcompensating for a problem that no longer exists. The result is a car that corners flat and with good mechanical grip but turn in and responsiveness aren`t as good as they could be and some cars will have some push. The higher rear bar rate of the PT bar allows us to balance the car much better and get that quick, crisp turn in and sports car responsiveness we all want. Mark SC&C

What is the width of this bar at the end-links? Looks like it has the right type of bend to solve my problem.

Can someone do me a favor? Those that have received your new rear sway bar, can you measure the width?

My Ford 9" rear has caused some problems in the past (namely with my Watts link) due to the design of the center housing and I'd like to see where this sway bar is going to fall in relationship to my watts link brackets and center housing area.

Thanks guys!

Overall width 35 1/2" outside at round part of bar (widest spot)
35" outside at flat link mounting holes
34" inside of bar ends
Center drop section about 15" wide (5" angle down, 5" across center, 5" angle up - approx.)
Amount of drop about 3 1/2" (measures just under 4" from Outside of bar to Outside of bar)

Thanks. Sounds a bit wide but I figure the actual axle clamps will be set inboard a bit from the ends as I've seen in a few pictures.
