Well, after buying, driving, & selling a few early 2nd gen F-body's (as well as taking a LONG time to figure out what I really want to do) I have finally decided to pull the trigger & start building my car.
Please welcome: Project New Bird - 1970 Pontiac Trans Am
Please sit back & enjoy the show as I take you through my long journey on building my piece of happiness :)

The car:
1970 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am

Color:
2006 Pontiac GTO IBM blue with correct white/black stripe. I wanted something a tad bit more "blue" in color than the original Lucerne Blue but still wanted to retain an original Pontiac color. I still may consider HOK Oriental Pearl Blue or the blue Frank @ Prodigy sprayed on the 57 chevy with the white back.

2004 GTO master cylinder
Interior:
I will use the complete setup from my 2004 GTO (F & R seats, dash, steering wheel, center console, etc.). The seats will be recovered not to say GTO as well as the dash & gauges. The door panels & trim will be custom made to match. Inside will be covered with Dynamat or equivalent for noise deadening. I would say this is by far going to be the hardest part of the build. Basically I will have to recreate the GTO inside of the Trans Am...
Sound system:
Pioneer AC3
US Amps 4x50 mids/highs amp - especially since they were hand made here in Gainesville! :)
US Amps 1x200 sub amp
Seas/Focal mid & highs front

Hidden Escort SRX radar detector
The goal is to have this done for SEMA 2011 (I HOPE....) so any Vendors / Sponsors looking for a car to show off their new stuff let me know...
Thanks to all who have helped so far as well as the many who still will. This site is a fantastic source of information & inspiration!!! I would never be able to do something like this in my garage as a 1st time project without you :)

Thank you all very much for the good words & encouragement!
John, it will be tough to do in 2 years as my friend helping me said the same thing.... but I'm an optimist :)
Rockytopper, that is one of the key elements I wanted to keep with the design. Glad you like the idea too! I will end up building something like what my friend Jeff D. did:

BossaNova, I like the Bandit year cars but the 70-73 cars are the $hitznit! I really love the look of those.

I also thought I would post some pics of the doner car before I start cutting it apart. It is a 2004 GTO with 19000 miles on it. Originally I was going to have Butler build me a stroked 400 or 455 with E-Heads. Then I got the quote... For the price I was going to pay for that alone I bought the entire running GTO :) Considering I had no tranny or interior lined up yet, this was the way to go.

Here are my pics I posted a few weeks ago when I got the car back from the blasters. This was the day after Thanksgiving. It took me 2 full days of dusting, vacuuming, prepping, cleaning, mixing, painting, CLEANING UP SPILLED PAINT, looking for a new gun, putting everything away, getting everything back out, vacuuming, prepping, cleaning, mixing, painting, cleaning up, & putting things away for good. I hope you get the idea it was a real P.I.T.A. I think next time I am going to bring my car to Orlando or Jax to get soda blasted & primed all at once (Frank, know any good people to recommend?). I used a local guy here in town that uses a new sponge material that is very easy on the metal & doesn't have any problems associated with it like other media.

wow man, awesome project. I also love the early 2nd gen birds but settled for a 79 lol. I'm not one to care much about keeping cars original but in this case, knowing what a real 70 TA is worth, I'm very surprised to see you modding one. But then again I guess if you were missing the original drive train then that woulda killed the value anyway.

T Raven, I totally agree with what you are saying which is why I decided not to mod it & waited to find a clone to just cut up :)
very cool. I love these cars. Have you had the motor build yet? I'm curious if you will have piston to valve problems. It's goign to be very close if not.

awesome project. I love these early birds.
i'll keep an eye out on this one. hopeufully you will have lots of batteries for your camera.

It will be close but I will be within the limits. 24X* duration & over .6" lift a different story. I'm going thick stock gaskets + 232* with .585 lift so I will be ok :)
ah I didn't even look at the lift numbers. I automatically assume people go with XER grinds from comp. You're right at .6" lift with the XER grind
keep us updated. This is gonna be cool

I got ya. I got a good deal on a Futral F13 cam so I went with that one. IIRC they are Cam Motion grinds. Not real sure how they compare to the new Comp lobes though.
They are Cam Motion, yes. Futral has some excellent cams. This one will do very well for you and have a good muscle car sound without being over bearing in terms of idle quality and driving manners

Not a lot done this weekend. Went to PRI show in Orlando instead :) I talked to a lot of really great people in the business (Kyle & Stacy Tucker, Chris Alston, David Butler...) & viewed some great cars (Back in Black, Empty Nest, Ford GT TT, Air Rides 1968 Camaro "Velocity"). Didn't know "Razor" - the Ring Brother's 69 Camaro would be there. What a treat that car was... All I could say is WOW!!!
There was even a cruise in at Old Town later that night but we got out of dinner too late & made it there just as the cars were rolling out :(
I did manager to get some of the GTO interior out before I left though:

Would have got more done but the *(#@$*$ &^&*# radio would not come out.... Usually coat hangers work great but she was a tricky bieoch & didn't want to come out... Monday I will get a removal tool for it & also start working on smoothing the firewall.

Well I would love to post pics of the work done so far but..... my significant other decided she was going to take the card reader with her - +&%@*&%!=%^!!!!!!!
I got a lot torn out of the GTO & started mocking up how it will look in the TA. Basically I'm having roadblocks trying to make the dash & ac work. I realized there is no easy way to fit the GTO console in there with the wide a$$ GTO seats. Looks like I will have to fab something up now. I'll snap a few pics with the cell phone tomorrow so you can get an idea of what is going on.

My new trunk pan came in on Friday so I decided to take a break from the interior mess & work on it. I didn't get too much done b/c it got real windy & was about to rain. I just took my gloves off & was walking inside to get a drink when a big gust of wind blew my sheet metal over on me. I got scratched & cut on several spots but the deepest was on my hand. I got it to stop bleeding & realized I probably needed to get it closed up. Problem is I didn't want to pay $200+ or spend 3 hours in a waiting room to do it... So I looked inside & found my super glue, cleaned it up & sealed it shut. When it was all done it looked like just another scratch :) . I think Monday & will get a tetanus shot just to be safe. I'm sure it has been 10+ years...

Cdoggy,
Great progess on the interior. Here's a tip. Make sure you mockup/install the tranny first. Set the console over the shifter. This will be your anchor point for the rest of the dash. Then you can trim the dash and the overlay to the contour of the winshield. Hope this helps.

This is going to be an awesome build! I grew up riding around with my Dad in a 70 T/A (white w/ the blue stripe) that he eventually sold in the 90's to help pay for my sister's college. Being a broke college student myself at the time, I was unable to jump on it. Selling price, only $2200! :pat:

Thanks for the info Sam. I'm glad you posted b/c I wanted to ask you a few questions about the cool stuff you are doing to your bird! Check you PM box.
Ed, that is a cool story (except the selling it part) & I can totally relate. My Dad's 1st car was a 1970 FB he got brand new for graduation. I remember going all over the place in that thing. It was such a blast! I have the car now & will never get rid of it.
The prices for those cars in the 90's were so low... I remember when we were looking for our 1973 TA back in 1996 we passed up TONS of 70-71-72 TA's that were so nice for $6000 & $7000 it wasn't even funny. After 6-7 months we finally found the car we wanted & it was in FL too! It was an all original 1973 Trans Am that was red over white interior, 4spd, ac & 43000 miles on her. We bought it but thought we paid a tad too much as the original owner would come a dollar off his asking price of $4500.......... :)

Did some more metal work last night. I stripped to trunk lining off most of the upper area to see if there was any other surprises waiting for me to address. Sure enough, more repair will be needed...

Thanks Aaron! After watching the maze of wires you had to deal with I labeled EVERYTHING :) BTW, I sent you an email about your 71 Formula about a week ago. How is that bad boy coming? I want you to know that seeing your car & what you did was one of the major determining factors of the direction of this project so you are totally to blame for all this if it doesn't work out...... err, uh.... I mean thank you for the inspiration!!! :) For all who don't know check out: http://www.extremefirebird.com/
There are sever major bugs to work out with the dash but I'm about 95% sure we can make it work.
The front seats will be great as I'm still able to maintain all power functions. The rears will be snug but will work. My friend Jeff who has been a MAJOR HELP with this put them in his TA:

Thank you very much guys! It's cool to see some follow Pontiac guys from across the big pond! I can only imagine how hard it is for you all to get parts.
My buddy worked in his garage for a long time to finish his car but it turned out very nice. He even got a cover on HPP :)

yeah, I remember reading that issue as well. For his first build, your buddy did one hell of a job. never would have thought he taught himself how to do this work on that car. Very nice

Got to looking at my rocker panels & as you can see they need to be fixed so..... I got some replacements. Not sure I like the fit that much or is that just the way they come? What do I do with that big bent up piece at the end? Cut it off & bend it up? Not sure what to do here. Any advice?

A couple of q's-
1) Have you tried to remove the undercoating in the rocker area/wheelwell? Maybe there is some enlightenment hiding under that stuff? Worth a try...
2) How much coverage does the trunk pan offer? I need to replace my 71's, and it has some holes all the way up the rear kickup section- near the rear panel.
Thanks!

Cdoggy you go man! great idea on the color change! I had a 72 455ho that was lucerne blue also - had a thing for them since about 73-4 when a neighbor buddy had one - never cared for the white ones since. I'll be watching this build. at this rate every everybody's car will be done before my body man gives mine back :yum:

John,
I will be removing the undercoating this week. As for the pan, it covers a good bit but IIRC not quite that high. I'm not sure if the full pan goes that far or not.
Zman, thanks! I had a #'s matching white one that I sold last year to fund this project. I always had a woody for the blue ones :)

Not a lot of progress as I have been screwing around about what to do with the tail panel & Fabulous Firebirds...
As most people fixing up 70-73 firebirds know you can't get squat for those years. The tail panel being no exception. You can find NOS ones that pop up from time to time on eBay but they usually run $1500 to $2000 so F THAT! Another option is donor car. So I called Fabulous Firebirds in MO & they guy tells me he has a perfect one with 1 small rust hole the size of a pencil tip. Great I'll take it... 4 days later & an additional $90 in shipping & this is what I get:

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/01/3223882997_5eec3da5cf-1.jpg?v=0
As you can see I was not too happy... 1 small rust spot, HA!, try 10 good sized ones. Good shape, HA!, how about full of mud. After spending almost $600 I was only offered a measly $75 credit & I had to even fight for that! The kicker is that this all started Dec. 9th & I STILL have not received closure or $ from them!
So, be ware of the new owner & guys that work there as they are not the same as what Larry was doing in the past when he owned it...
That sucks! If you paid by credit card, do a charge back and dispute it. You only have a couple more weeks though. 60 days is the limit. Good luck

01-25-2009, 03:45 PM

Whenever doing any major purchase transactions, online purchases, ebay, etc. I always use a credit card. For ebay, even though I always use PayPal, if it's a bigger purchase, I'll select my backup credit card vs. my bank account so in the event there's a situation like this, my cash isn't tied up in it and I have the credit card company to back me up (hopefully).
Hope it all works out!

Just a quick few updates....
1. Got some of my $$$ back from American Express :) Not much but I am happy I got something none the less.
2. I have been working on my friends 68 FB (the one from earlier) to get it ready for the big Gator Nationals car show this weekend. We did a bunch to the interior including fabing our own center console & redoing the seats. We also made some front fender braces to match the hinges & a few other custom - one off touches... This thing is SO SICK now :) I will post pics this weekend from the show.
3. Started work on building a set of speakers for the house. For those that build audio, I will be using Seas aluminum cone drivers in a 3-way design.

4. I wanted something to play with since my car won't be ready so I got a motorcycle. Going with the theme here it's no new bike but a 1973 CB750 that I am turning into a Cafe Racer...
Here she is as it sits now:

LOL, I think a lot of us here share the same problem. I own 7 vehicles, I'm about to buy a 76 GMC just because it has a 454, and I almost drove over to Seattle Saturday to buy the 81 TA in the for sale section. But my need to go back to Iraq tomorrow over came my addiction to buying cars lol.

OK, so back on track....
We finished up my friends 68 FINALLY so I can now get back to my car. My time wasn't a total waist as we came up with a new fender brace design for 1st Gen F-bodies. It turned out so sweet. Same for the console Doug made & the new touches we added to the interior. Not bad for a realtor & a store manager :)

C Doggy,
Is this the TA Clone you bought from Connecticut? If so, thank so much for restoring this the way it should have been! I talked with Shawn from BRP back when I was getting stuff for my TA and I found out roughly what you paid for it from that guy and was PISSED!!!! If he lied to you I am sorry...he did not buy that car from me for that price.
Again, great job and can't wait to see the final product!
Take care,

I am saving my old usable parts. I will be putting them on ebay soon along with some original parts off my 1973 CB750. Frame mods are done so I hope to be finished with that soon so I can FINALLY get back to my TA :) Are there any parts you need I can help with?

8-9 years ago Larry still owned FF. The business was a lot different. Many things have transpired since then.
GTO donor cars are easy to find. You can get then on ebay for 5K to 9k. I should have waited to get mine but again, LE$$ON learned...

I'm seeing a lot of 2nd Gen love these days so I thought I would give this thread a little update even though I don't have a lot of "progress" to report on :( A BIG factor in this was that in October I took a transfer out of the ville down to Lakeland. It really SUX b/c I can't work on my projects when I come home from work & now have to drive 2+ hours to do it. I am closer to my girl so that helps though. As you can see I'm almost done with the bike as I really want to get back on the car soon... she looks so sad just sitting there getting no love. On a positive note for my Christmas gift to myself, I signed up for one of Ron Covell's metal working classes in January. I had no idea who he was or what he did but Bryan Fuller (of Fuller Hot Rods) talked me into it while talking bikes at the PRI show (go figure right?). So I talked my 2 friends into making a guys trip to ATL out of it :) Anyway I hope to post some real car stuff soon & I hope everyone had a great holiday!!!

Hey, love your build- how involved is the install of the GTO seats? I am the moderately proud owner of a 70 Camaro (not as cool as a Firebird, right?) And am thinking it might be a good way to get seats as mine came with cobbled up Honda seats (wood blocks for seat frames)! Nice!
cdoggy81
01-28-2010, 07:24 PM
Thanks guys :)
As for the seats it depends on a few things...
Is it a bolt in? No, so with that being said how are your fab skills? They sit a little high so for tall guys (like me) you may want to remove the lower mount & lower them a bit. They are also wide so you need to watch that as well. If you just want something nice, new & easy, get some bolt in Procar seats. Best bang for the buck I.M.O. :)

With all the great 2nd gen cars being built here recently I thought I would post a quick update. I mean it's only been 8 months so why not right... :)
On a positive note, today was a good day as I sold my bike. That equals one less distraction out of the way of the car. Plus this Friday, I am moving to St Pete. The past year really sucked as I was living/working/playing in 3 different houses in 3 different cities... :( Now I got it down to 2 means less driving & more time for the car. I do hope to bring the car down during the holidays & start back up on it then as I have a few weeks off. All these cool Firebird's & Trans Am's really gave me the itch again :)

A quick update as well considering it's been 6 months:
I was lucky enough to secure a storage garage so I can now bring down the TA & start work back up on it! In the next 1-2 months I should have the car & all my tools set up & ready to go. Updates & progress reports will continue again. Sad part is I now loose being close to my good friend who has been helping me along the way with this. Now I just need to make friends with a metal worker in St. Pete.... It's tough to find people who will work for beer!

Well I hope some of you may still be following this thread so I figured it was time for another quick update, considering it's only been a year!!! (and what a year at that....)
Moved to St. Pete & rented a nice house in Snell for a year. I did get another garage space for what I thought would be for the car to work on... Too bad I had to fill it with all my other house stuff from gville but I guess it's a good thing I was able to rent it considering how bad the market sucked at the time. Two sides to every coin so a bad market for sellers = a good market for buyers. That being said I recently bought a new house here in St. Pete & just got done with the remodel. Wow, what fun that was, NOT!!! Anyway that is finally done with so now on to the wedding in 3 weeks... Wedding you say??? Ya, forgot to mention I also got engaged last year while in Park City / Deer Valley. Game plan is when we get back from the honeymoon I get the car moved down here & get after it again. There are a lot of good threads going that have me motivated. Now that I finally feel settled & have a place of my own that I live in & have enough space (sorta of) to work in. Thanks for letting me rant (a form of therapy I suppose) & I hope to have some more updates coming in June.

The front glass is the same, just mounted higher. The back glass is a different (wider) glass...
Love what you're doing with that bike....very cool style.
John, mate...talk to me about second gen flush glass...what have you heard? I have to buy a new screen for the front of my 71 anyway..... :)

It's been just over a year since my last post so to those of you still following this I wanted to give a quick update. In my last post things were going pretty good. I just got married, moved, got a house & I was getting on track to bring the car down & start back up. About the time I had a hauler lined up to get the GTO & TA down plus pull the engine for me, we had to deal with a surprise basal cell tumor that showed up during a routine check with my wife. Thank GOD it was benign & not malignant but it was still a real shock for us with her being so young. That had to be addressed & it set us back a little bit but nothing we couldn't handle together. There are people far worse off than us so we were very thankful with the outcome.
Fast forward several months to the holidays when I am ready again to get the cars while on vacation. Then out of the blue, BAM!!!. I tare my ACL & meniscus on Christmas Eve eve... Had the surgery a month later in January 2013 & have been rehabilitating since then. This is by far is the crappiest injury I have had as it totally shuts you down from activities & takes so long to recover from. Again, not the end of the world plus I am thankful this is something I will be able to come back from in time to almost 100% again.
So now here we are in April 2013 & I have recovered enough (both physically & financially) to attempt to get the cars for yet a 3rd time. You know the old saying "bad luck happens in threes" so here is the final kick in the b@ll$....
Got a frantic call from the tenant renting the house where I am keeping the cars. Between her crying, the husband yelling in the background at her & the fire department doing their thing I find out she threw some ashes that were still hot out in the side of the yard & caught the pine straw mulch on fire. That then continued to spread to the wood privacy fence & finally my GTO that I was using as a donor for this project. I was & still am, shocked & speechless...................... First thing I asked was if everyone was OK & they were thank goodness. House was ok too. It seemed to be just the fence, a power line to the ac & of course the GTO. They said it wasn't that bad & only got the front of the car as the fire dpt got there in time to put it out before it got worse & spread more. They sent me 2 pics from their camera phone the next day & I knew it was bad as soon as I got them :(
Here is what I saw:

I really don't know where to begin... I could write a ton more right now but I will know more facts this weekend as I will be dealing with everything then. I hope it isn't as bad as it looks but it has been VERY difficult to remain opportunistic through everything. They said they will replace the fence & cover the damages but I fear they have no idea what something like that cost.
Again, more to come later but I just needed to vent... Thanks guys.

Man, that sucks......the long block will be OK...but all those accessories and clips and wiring and EVERY DAMN USEFUL thing is now burnt up. Sorry to hear.
You see, this is why you can't have nice things.........

Sorry to hear about all the troubles. Honestly, the GTO doesn't look that bad. I bet when you start digging through it you will find that the engine is ok. You'll obviously need some more parts, but stay positive.
Andrew
Love the concept of your build. The color is great and I am sorry you have had such a rough time completing your project. I know the feeling. I bought a 69 Mustang that I thought was a driver and 5 years later it's almost back to a driving condition with all the mechanical and rust issues I have come across. Sorry for the GTO. I love those cars and they make great donors. The interior might be salvageable and the block should too. Sadly not sure on the wiring harness and all the little components, heat tends to grab those first.
I hope it works out where it's not too bad and you can get back to work on this project. I really love it and these older Trans Ams.

I thank you guys very much for the kind words of encouragement.
That being said I took the following pics of the damage & as LeighP unfortunately but correctly stated, "EVERY DAMN USEFUL thing is now burnt up".......... I also received some negative feedback/comments about replacement costs so I fear this may get worse :(

Thanks Randal. I appreciate it. Really in the grand scheme of life I / we don't have it so bad... I see & hear people all the time who have far worse problems so we are thankful. It is just a lot of real sucky crappy stuff to deal with here recently.
I did spend some time coming up with an itemized list & I sent that to the tenants. I hope to hear something back within the next few days but I'm not holding my breath...
I have also arraigned to get the GTO pulled out of there & to get the engine / tranny removed. The guy doing the work also said he could bring down the TA too for me so I will have him do that as well. Hope to get all this squared away within the next 2-3 weeks.

Well, as I suspected these past 2 weeks have not been fun at all... :(
As I mentioned in my last post I feared the tenant was going to be difficult to deal with on this. After SEVERAL conversations & him constantly arguing with me about what was damaged then beating me down on what he thought things were worth I was advised to just make a deal & take what I can get. I could keep fighting for more or even try & pursue legal action but even if I won it doesn't matter if you can't collect. That being said the total amount I will receive will just barely cover the cost of a front drive system from March Performance.... Ya, I'll let you Google that & $ee what I mean.... It $ux....
You can now imagine a LOT of things are going to have to change with this build. I get the car back this weekend with the engine pulled so I will get to see 1st hand what I have left to work with or how bad the damage really is. More pics & info to come.
Thanks again guys for all the encouraging words & emails. I really appreciate it!

Any updates? It's been like two years... Did you ditch the project?
cdoggy81
12-15-2014, 10:49 AM
No, I haven't ditched the project yet.... With the recent events I have thought about it though :(
They say it comes in 3's:
Last I left off I was in May 2013 when I was getting screwed over with the "replacement value" for the GTO parts car I was going to use. It is what it is, sucks, but moving on & just trimming the budget.
Last month I had to have ACL surgery AGAIN on the same knee so that has put me back 6-8 months physically. Like I said, it is what it is, it sucks, but gotta move on & I'll get over it. It could be worse............
The main thing I have been dealing with is the theft of my fathers 1973 Trans Am from the restoration shop we have been dealing with for years... I posted another thread about it here in the hopes that someone has some information about it & can help us recover it:
https://www.pro-touring.com/threads/112108-NEED-HELP-stolen-1973-Trans-Am-restoration-project?p=1106255#post1106255
My brother just graduated & as a gift my father gave him his 1970 Firebird 350 (it was his first car he got new & we still had it in the family!). He wanted to do something nice for me too & since I was doing this LS1 pro-touring project my father was going to surprise me & sell the 73 TA once done to help me complete mine. I'll finish this car some day but the worst thing was just seeing how it totally destroyed my dad to have his car stolen. I know some people can relate as they had similar or even worse things happen to them but for those who haven't I don't think I can justly articulate the feeling you have inside your stomach that just doesn't seem to fully go away for quite some time.

Sucks to hear that. But You know... All the bad things in life happens for a good reason. Also I have had to replace my 74 firebird within 4 different shops for the past 3 years. The bodywork was flawless when My project has started. But as it has sat in those shops without a cover, now it's got all those scratches, dents, some rust, etc...
I think by the time i succeed installing everything i have bought and starting the LS1, i will be driving a firebird with a RatRod look.
Honestly i don't care about the bodywork anymore... All i want to do it to ride it.

Looks like some people are looking out for others :}
After posting this ad on Nashville TN CL:
http://nashville.craigslist.org/cto/4809393450.html
Someone contacted me & told me to look on the Pontiac Pickers Classified group on FB:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/Pont...1725361258730/
I cant believe he had the balls to say what he said like that in a public forum & self incriminate himself. Heck, 2 people saw that car in his shop a year ago & one even remembered the ad Terry posted on Nashville CL where he listed it for sale!!! ---> If ANYONE remembers this ad or knows who purchased this car from Terry about a year ago, PLEASE contact me! I have got to catch this guy, stop him from doing this to others & hopefully get my dads car back!!!!!!!!

Why aren't the cops doing anything about this? Also, not everyone can see the Facebook posts. You should cut and paste here.

Andrew - The cops have not been helpful at all in this... :( I have sent the detective 3 people who saw the car in person, saw the ad Terry posted of the car FOR SALE on Craig's List & or had Terry offer to sell the car to them & he STILL has not contacted those people. I am about at wits end here with this...............
71LS5Formula - no, I have not ordered the wheels for my car yet. No money for them yet plus I have been dealing with our stolen car issue :-( I think I read that others have purchased from them or another dist. who sells them & had good success thus far.
