checking ball joint engagement

is there any easy way to check how the taper of a ball joint matches the taper in the spindle? im fixin to do the front end on my project, and want to make SURE teh parts fit right, not just assume they do. this is the first time ive ever thought about checking this, and only due to hearing about failures due to incorrect engagements.

so please, let me know how to do this. my thought involved magic marker, install ball joint, remove ball joint, see where the magic marker came off.

You could use some prussian blue dye.

Now as far as where the proper place is..... ???
First would be to check that the nut is not bottoming on the threads vs. the spindle.
Not enough projection and you won't get a cotter through the castle nut.
It is something most people take for granted and probably shouldn't with all the Chinese knockoffs floating around.

I usually stick the ball joint in the taper and wiggle it several directions. Any slop is cause for concern.
Early GM products used a 7 degree taper, later GM using the cast knuckle uses a 10 degree taper. This includes tie rod ends.

First gen and second gen upper ball joints use the same bolt pattern and housing, so it's possible to make a mistake and install the wrong one.
