A fellow I know is moving and asked if I wanted his Jag. it is black on black. rust bubble in rear 1/4 and rot under the front portion of the rockers. he also states that the rear main seal leaks. interior is pretty clean and paint is decent. overall the car has a nice elegant/ claassic look to it. I heard the rear main seal replacement involves basically rebuilding the engine as it has a split crank case. (oil pan part of case). cars as 104k. I really don't need another car. nonetheless one that has the potential to suck me dry. nor do I feel like dropping a chevy into it. wondering is anyone here has any experiences with these or rear seal replacement. is it even worth getting? I guess worst case is it becomes a parts donor and a few hondas. I know the in-board brake setup is popular w/ the street rodders.

Get it and drop a big block Chevy in it.
There's a ton of info out there on this swap and apparently it's a fairly easy swap. I think there's a company called JagsThatRun.com ... I re-read your post...if you have something against the big block Chevy, drop in a 455. :^P

just junk it,
buddy had 3 of them, scrapped one out, the other is a complete rust bucket, and the third had the usual rust with a leaky rear main, it just sits in his garage/work shop,

If you have the room, take it. You can sell parts off of it until you get scrap metal price for the rest. Parts is parts and parts for a Jag are worth very good $$$$ to the people who need them.
It's like someone giving you a free pass to a gold mine that you don't have to dig very hard to get some gold, it's just there is only so much gold to get before it gets to be harder to get. Go for the easy gold and let the scrap yard bury the rest.
The car you are building needs the cash doesn't it?

But you have to find the people wanting the Jag parts

Street Rodders like Jag rears, or at least they used to when we were heavy into that scene back in the '90's. I would stick a healthy V8 in it and fix it back up stock. Nothing like a stocker rolling up to the lights and blowing the doors off the car beside you. LOL Build a sleeper!!

now that you said that...humm, I'm only 5 times over initial budget:barf:
I don't have anything against chevys, just not in the position to jump into another bottomless money pit. although a nice LS/ T56 or even auto swap would be a nice sleeper and cruiser. I do have a northstar and a 455 buick in stock.
I'll probably wind up with it and see how bad the leak is. being in the position I'm in at the moment (life and economic), if it is a hassle to fix as is, I'll probably part it or sell it cheap to fund the 78 and 74 trans ams. rreachering I found that replacing the rear main results in rebuilding the engine due to everything you have to dissasemble.

If you dont wanna drop a chevy in, go with a viper v10. Jags are great cars, fun to drive and they look great in my opinion. Swap a 6 speed, do a little suspension work, new wheels and you have a freaking sweet toy that can fit a few friends or the family. My dad put his old jag in storage and we are planning to do a BBC swap into it in the next year or two with a 6 speed. I think of it as jaguars type of M5, cause those xjrs are SLOW. If you are getting it for free and have the space I say go for it, you could make it a really cool project, or even just a classy daily drivy
It'll be a time hog no matter what you do with it.
Just gotta ask yourself if it's worth the $$$ you can eventually make on it. Time vs Money.

Why put a big ole' thirsty old school engine in such a classy car?
Get yourself an LS3. That's the way to go. :)

[quote=70camaro406;464887]Street Rodders like Jag rears,
These are dirt cheap, I sold 2 complete short arm rears to Atlanta Street Rods, for 500 bucks delivered! from central Florida,
hell post pics and see if anyone here will give your 500 or a 1000 for the whole car. I might but it's a long shot honestly. I wouldn't pass on it though even if you do flip it. Unless of course your friend would be hurt by you flipping it after he gave it to you.

I work with a guy who bought one for a dollar, and he ended up spending over a grand just on the rear brakes. They are a pain to work on, and expensive. Unless you really dig the car, I would go with Jim's advice.

Nice! I love the color scheme on the bottom picture, I remember watching those colors race at the Rolex24 (may have been the Sundial24 back then) years ago.
