View Full Version : End of what was almost a project

Well I am here to announce that I did not have the opportunity to actually work on my nova as I had hoped to. A friend of the family was over the other day looking at the car as he was going to help us bring it back to life, he was looking over the name of the shop we had acid dip it and somehow we realized the VIN on the title and the vin on the car didn't match. Somehow I had managed to overlook this earlier on, (like when we shelled out he cash for the car) and now it came back to bite us in the ass. We called the police station and apparently the car we had was stolen in the early 90's in west Texas. The car was picked up and is going to be scraped by police I assume. Luckily we will not be charged with any theft but I do not know what will happen to the last owners, we gave the cops their info and we will see what happens. I have a lead on another car and I am gonna go check that out tomorrow. Hopefully this second go will work out a bit better. This car has been issues through and through and hopefully it will just be somewhat smooth sailing from her on out. Anyways, I hope to have a project to start on soon, with winter here I need something to do!

Sorry to hear it! When I bought the '66 I checked all the VINS and reported them to the police to make sure they checked out before forking over ANY money to the previous owner.

Good luck in your hunt for a new project!

I dont know yet, I think it will depend on what happens with the police and from there we will choose the best course of action.

I dont think I am ever going to make this mistake again, I got trigger happy with this car and jumped on it. I cant believe how stupid I was not looking at something like that. I guess I just assume all people are honest, good people...that aint so!

I have seen that one, I have been trying to get a hold of the owner but it has been hard to get him to respond. Looks like an awesome deal though and hopefully he can get back to me.

That is a very hard thing to swallow but better to find out now than after you got pulled over and they confiscated it.

You were really getting yourself on the right track to get moving on it too!

Cutting the line and taking your loses might be the best thing if it makes you sick to think about it and it wasn't that much $$$

One thing to think about. If you didn't pay any more for it than the small claims amount in your state, you might be able to take the people to court and get a judgement against them to get it back and have the courts garnish their wages for it. With a little help from free legal services you might be able to do it with only a day or 2 off of work and some relatively small court fees. It's just a thought. I don't know what you paid for the car?
I surely would think getting a lawyer and trying to go big with it wouldn't be worth it but on a small scale and a little free help you might be able to get parts money coming your way someday?

I hope the karma comes your way and you can stay positive.

good luck on the next car Colin. I bet it'll be even better than the first one. I'd also stick to a nova personally. I think you had a great idea for a seldom seen car.

Thanks, right now we are exploring our options, we didnt pay that much for the car, about a grand, but we also paid to have it media blasted, acid dipped, and primered, which puts the total close to 4 grand as well as about 500 bucks in trailor rentals. While those are costs that I have no problem with those expenses on a car I am going to build, It comes up to be 5.5K that was just throw away essentially not even including the fuel costs associated with moving the body and picking it up 300 miles away. I dont think those costs can be recuperated in court either so there goes some cool new piece I wanted. I am going to see what my options are go from there. Right now I am just looking at my options and we will see.

Thanks Trey, hopefully I can find another good nova, I would love to build one, I keep getting cool ideas for what I could do with it. Hopefully I can find something decent!

Man, don't beat yourself up! It surely wasn't your fault. Who would have guessed that a guy with a title would have not matched with the car? It has never occurred to me to check out the 20 or so cars I have owned in my lifetime...

I would give a guy just about anything but I REALLY can't stand a thief!! I sure hope he gets whats coming. :machine:

So they took the car and they're gonna scrap it?! I don't get it. If it was stolen why wouldn't they contact the people who reported it stolen? and if they can't be found then they should issue a conditional title and let you keep it unless someone comes forward to claim it was theirs. There's too many ways to handle a situation like that rather than destroy the car.

Shouldn't be scrapped. It will be returned to the original owners (if available). It could come back to you anyway if they don't want it or let yopu keep it (heard of this before).

That's what I was wondering?
Why would they scrap the car ?
Hope you get the car back and it would be a good idea to CALL the "Secretary of States" office to see what will really happen to your car !

Technically if it was covered and paid for by an insurance co they will own it. In that case it's usually sent to the local salvage pool which usually only open to licensed dealers. If not you may be able to buy it from the legal owner. Especially if they don't feel it's worth going to pick up.
