Here's the deal...

I am working on a deal to get a crate LS1, brand new gm crate, delivered to me for $2500. No harness or ecu.

Here's the situation...

1. I don't need another motor at the moment, but I will eventually build another car and would like it to be an LS build
2. I don't know much about LS engines, but I do know that this would be about 1/2 of retail + free shipping (I know I can get the LS1 for $2500...I am working on the free shipping part). I believe the LS1 is about 350 hp. Is this a decent engine? I have read that the LS2 is a better engine? Does the LS1 make a decent base?

I figure I can always sell the engine and be equal or even a little ahead if I end up not using it.

Thoughts?? Is this that GREAT a deal to jump on when I really don't need it or should I just pass?

Well if you needed it it would be a killer deal, if you just want it for a later project like you said its a good deal still. Yes the LS2 is/may be a better more powerful engine but it is more $$.

look at it like this- you could get the motor for $2500, stick another $2500 into it (better L92 heads, intake, and cam and what not) and have the same motor you could have bought for $5k to begin with if you would have just gotten an L92.

L92 heads will not work on an LS1. You need a 4" bore.

Phil...if it is indeed an LS1 and is brand new in the crate, never used...then yeah $2500 is a smoking deal for it. But you gotta make sure that it is indeed an LS1. Get the numbers off of it and then go to LS1tech.com to verify. Even if you just bought it to turn around and sell you could probably get another grand for it on eBay.

If the heads have the 853 or 241 designation, then it is probably an LS1.

Thanks guys, I am an LSx newbie, so pardon my ignorance.

I am getting a pic of the actual motor in the crate and a pic of the reciept. He bought it a month ago MSRP from GM of $6,039 and it is still in the crate. He confirmed that this is it:

And this is the GM description:

The engine is rated at 350 horsepower and 365 lb.-ft. of torque. The engine includes a GTO-style oil pan, electronic drive-bywire throttle body, intake manifold, exhaust manifolds, fuel rail with injectors, balancer, and 14" automatic transmission flexplate. It makes a great performance engine for your performance vehicle project – just add your wiring and electronics.

I guess his brother totalled his '91 Camaro RS that he was planning on putting this in and he has gotten into some financial issues.

Like you said Tony, if I end up sitting on it too long, I think I could flip it for another $1K.

Phil, I would pass for now. No need to tie up money on something that will just set there and than when the time comes, you can buy a used LS1 for about $1300-1600. Been seeing a few LS1/4L60 combos for $2400. But if you want new, than it seems like a decent deal. You still have the 5.3L's for CHEAP and the 6.0L's for decent money and the 6.0's will make good power. Looks, like I'm putting a 6.0 with a turbo in the 69. Plenty of options out there.

Sooo here's how this one ended up. The crate was at his work place so he was going to get me pics today. He opened the crate for the 1st time and it was the long block only. Hmmm. This was 1 of my concerns from the get-go. He said that the dealer delivered him the wrong engine and offered him a full refund. He knew I was not interested in just a long block for that price, so I did back out.

I like to give people the benefit of the doubt, but there are some fishy things here:

1. He had the crate for a month and never opened it?
2. I ask for the receipt and get this story above.
3. You could get $3800-$4200 for it all day long on eBay

Anyway, the net is, the money stays in my bank account and I don't have to worry about the transaction or storing it.

Thanks for your thoughts,

Phil
