Lost my job yesterday, thanks to a discriminating service manager and a boss who is an owner not a boss.
They told me to not make excuses for things but then they bring up some doozies for why I am out or not getting work and some such garbage. But half the other techs in the shop were doing same crap.
I always got the crap work, problem child cars and ones that were not slam dunk diagnostics.
I never turned a car away and never had one beat me. But I was supposed to be fast.
Kind of hard when I got the fun stuff.
Dont get me wrong I love what I do and I am good, heck even the younger fast guy would ask me for help and I was the best electrical tech in house.
But I believe that the service manager has a couple of friends he wants to hire.
So I am looking for another mechanics job.
Even have a decent lead or two.
I was told the rosy story about what I could make and how it all wold work and such but you know, it never came through.
Heck now I need to work on my stand alone DIS and Flex FI more and my universal ABS too. But may have dealership job.
Considering I am an ASE Master Auto Tech, ASE Master MAchinist, ASE Undercar specialist, ASE L1 Advanced Level tech and even have driveability class under my belt and AC certification too, I shoul;d be able to land on my feet.
Just hurts, I stayed with this shop for other reasons (garnishment) and got put through the ringer finacially and even lost some tools I got pawn loans onand lost.
First shop I have ever had an issue with being given work, plenty of work but just wouldnt get the tickets as the SM was too worried about speed on the job, even though he would wait for faster tech to get done with a jobe before he would give it to him and I was sitting around twiddling my thumbs.
So what if one guy does it 1.5 hours over me doing it in 2.25 but he waits 2 hours for other tech to finish differnt job to give it to him.
They told me my productivity was not good but when you stand around and not get any tickets to work on what can you do. I was at mercy of SM and he was a lying, decietful waste of human flesh,,, oh wait was he even human?
I am used to getting jobs and working on them till done. If job takes me 3 hours but only pays 2.5 I only get 2.5 but I know my work is good as I rarely ever had a comeback.
Flat rate sucks on some jobs but it makes estiamtion much easier and fair.
Oh well guess I could go kill someone then would have free food and warm bed, heck might even have warm company,,,,,,nah just cant stand thinking that way.
I would rather freeze to death first besides being Christian means I cant kill unless its in self defense.
And another besides if you kill a stupid person it simply infects another group hence making even more stupid people, best let die a natural death.
So if anyone needs a good tech and honest hot rodder in southern Indianagive me a shout

dude i know how you feel im a painter i take pride in my work so of course it takes a little longer. ive had 1 redo in 11yrs not bad for a painter . i worked for a co that had a really fast hot dog painter qaulity wasnt to bad so they would give him most of the gravey work. the problem was he would average a redo every week !! but the owner & manager didnt get it.if you have to do the job twice? pay for material twice? was he really that much faster? not counting the qaulity wasnt as good?!? dealerships are the worst they treat customers cars like cattle with no regard to qaulity & workmanship but people seem to keep going back? enough raven good luck with finding a job

Don't take it personal man, I know it's hard not to. I've worked as a tech for over 20 years and one thing I learned is that you can't make a bad shop good. The flat rape system allows guys to do exactly as you described. If the man giving out the work has an issue with you, there is no work to be had. You'll land on your feet and maybe end up in a good shop where you can make some real money.

Thanks for the encouragement, thought going into a shop with 23.00 flat rate would make me rich, heck I made half what I used to make at 14.00 and hour.
May have a line on a Ford dealer job, SM only wants good inspections and quality work, and not to lie to customer or him. If it will take longer so be it, let them know.
May also look into truck shops too, not much into diesel work but learned a lot in that shop, just went broke doing it.

Dude, I live in Southern Indiana. I live about 15 minutes North of Louisville. I served my apprenticeship in Oldham Co.,KY. I worked there for 10 years, then I got a job closer to home in Indiana. I worked there for the most miserable 7 years of my life. I then realized why everybody in KY. gave me so much hell for being a Hoosier. I guess there is a high rate of inbreeding in Indiana; hence all the deushbags you got to put up with to work in Indiana. I finally quit and I have been very happy with my new job in KY!
They probably did you a big favor. Good luck with your endeavors!

Sorry to hear that Monza. Good luck to you, and keep your head up. Hell I might be joining you out there in a couple months.

Also keep this in mind.........."Where you work is just that. It has nothing to do with who you are." My Doc told me that. That place in Indiana had me on the verge of PhysCotiC! His words helped me put it in perspective and not do anything that I would have regreted later down the road. I just said "I quit" Boss said why? I said "because you and everybody else, in this place, are a bunch of whiny *****s!"... I then grabbed the forklift and put my toolbox on my truck. The whole time, I had the biggest smile on my face.

:)

As the great Johnny Paycheck would say"Take this job and shove it!"

A good mechanic will never go hungry. I'm sure you'll find work soon.

it is sad, I used to sell cars and we had one manager that sold more cars than the other but his profit margines were WAY low and his customer satisfaction was in the tank but yet the dealership got rid of the other manager, moving product is all that counts and the car manufacturers have a lot to do with putting that pressure on the dealer and that goes for the service dept. as well
