I'm currently in the planning stages for my interior on my '68 Camaro. I'm using a 2002 TA for a drivetrain and partial interior donor. I'm going to front mounted rack & pinion steering, and plan on using the 4th gen steering column as well. The only issue is that I'd like to keep the ignition on the dash if at all possible.
Has anyone removed the ignition from a modern column? If not, does anyone know exactly what the housing is usually made of on late model vehicles? My guess would be a cast metal, although I'm not exactly sure what it is.

Its cast zinc, that is what our company uses for the OEMs.

I bought a new ididit and had them remove the ignition. I was reimbursed the part and charged for the labor and it was a wash.
