Well i am back and building a new car no its not a 57 chevy as the title might lead you to belive but a 69 mustang fast back..plans call for a 460 bb with a C6 tranny, mini tubbed with 315`s under the rear, with a triangulated late model rear end, disc brakes all round , complete front end removed and a pro touring mustang type front end installed sitting low and mean....I post pics as soon as its in my garage just finishing up a 69 tubbed nova with a 650hp on motor small block here is a pic of the nova

Apart from a mustang 2 front end i need suggestions .bear in mind the shock towers have got to go ??? any recomendations......

aussiebj
11-07-2008, 05:20 PM
I like the RRs stuff and its from down under
Check out the RRS stuff. Pretty slick.

http://www.rrs-online.com/

they also have a shock tower notching kit for your BB. That way you can keep it sort of stock looking with a strut tower brace or something. This is the route I'm going with my '68 fastback.

why not go full frame? just a thought...you could run IFS stuff and a triangulated 3 link out back...just a thought...definitely gonna follow this build!
thats the plan thanks...

This weekends progress consisted of removing the rear and leaf springs ,removing the old front end frame rails and all ,started to clean up the body ill be repairing the drivers quater and replacing the passengers. I thought i could get away without mini tubbing the rear but 315`s are big tires so a mild mini tub will have to be done .....here are some pics.

Hey looks killer with 315`s on the front
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/11/69stangloosesfrontend-1.jpg
Set at 7 inches to the ground this will probably be the ride height...
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/11/69stangloosesfrontend1-1.jpg
hung the front fenders on to see if the 315`s would clear...

I have a Heidts under the front of my 69 but I liked the Chassis works that someone posted pics of here a while back.

Be sure to get your VIN #'s off the front aprons before you throw it out!!!!!!!!!!

I have a rebuilder D1 Block/crank, D0 rods, D3 heads for sale if you need a 460 to build.
I am going with a checkered flagg racing front end...

No VIN's..not the first time that has happened LOL!! One othet thing about the Heidts front susp., If you put a BB i it you wont be able to get the engine very low. Also if you move the engine far enough forward to get it low it will be WAY forward!! Keep that in mind......
Heres mine........
Thanks for the info

Ok here is this weekends update 10/19 removed the rest of the front frame rails and found 30yrs of rust and a bad front end repair, so while i was in the metal removing mood i removed the front torque boxes and both floor pans as they were replaced before and not done well ,looks like i will be building a full frame for this car..here are some pics
30 yrs of rust

That rack placement and crossmember look almost exactly like my heidts. Getting a BB just like you want it will be a (just my .02) bitch!
You may just as well get a full one piece floor pan,it would be way better looking and less work.
i had that in mind as well..

aussiebj
11-07-2008, 05:31 PM
Yes i know i got it off ebay from checkered flagg racing for 2000.00 not bad i thought and that was complete as you see it and delivered as well as for the motor i have my 460 and c6 already, might switch over to power stearing with 275`s up front .As for the floor pan i am giong to make a custom interior and make my own floor pans as well .....

Thats a lot of structure to remove from a unibody car without some temp bracing or tying down to a plate or bench. At least throw the doors back on and tack the gaps closed to keep the openings square.

You can build a quick frame table with some 2x3 or 2x4 tubing running side to side across the rockers.

Just hate to see you weld a clip and the be out of square with the body.
i hear ya..

aussiebj
11-07-2008, 05:34 PM
check out the mustang I am currently building I have installed chassisworks front and rear suspension and this stuff is way nicer than heidts or art morrison stuff imo. here's the link. https://www.pro-touring.com/forum/showthread.php?t=47008 feel free to pm me or call if you have any questions. great looking project good luck

Now thats a nice stang

Brian i understand what you are saying but i am going to build a full chassis for this car as it was hit in the front and the rear so i really cant use any of the body to measure from ill make a square and true frame and put the body back down on it...

Front tires came in and had them mounted 275 40 17`s on the front ,finished up drivers side lower qtr panel patch repair ,mounted wheels to front end and slid under car to see what the turning radius of the tires would be ,mounted the front fenders to see if i have good tire track and clearances with the late model wheels so far all looks good ,lots more metal work to go ,ordered 2x3 tubing for the rest of the chassis, should start that this weekend..working out my rear track so i can narrow my rear ..Sorry no pics today ill get some up tomorrow..

A great place for panels is cj pony they have so many parts that are very well priced, I don't know how there fit and finish is compaired to other companies. But if you are looking to inmprove fir and finish hands down year one. On my mustang the old stock stuff did not fit very well the door gaps were way off then we replaced the doors and quarters and it is a night and day diffrence.
Thanks ill look into it

Ok eye was given clean bill of health now back onto the build ..12/7/08 update finally got the body mounted to the frame and now its a roller again ..first mounted the pass rocker then i fabbed up the dropped crossmember mounts ..1/8th plate and i cut up a piece of frame into 4 pieces and welded to the rockers for the rear..as for the front i made up some 1/8th plate mounts for the firewall so i could mount some roll bar to front frame ..at the moment this will support the front until i make the headers and exhaust then i will tie the frame to the rockers..anyway here are some progress pics....

were you planning on painting the entire frame? i saw that you already welded on that front down bar from the firewall to the frame rail which would make removing the body to paint a bit hard...

looks awesome though! i really dig this project!

I was planning on making the body removable but the customer did not want that so now its fully welded......

Got the drivers side roll bar mount boxed in and fit the exhaust tip through the rocker i think i will use 3/8 tubing around the opening and blend it into the body kind of like what the elanors do here `s the pics

How are those tips going to be supported at or near where they pass through the bodywork?

The reason I'm asking is because if they're free to float a bit, expansion of the pipe while running hard (read, hot) may move it into the bodywork and rattle/wear through the paint/etc.

If you firmly mount it at the bodywork, or even if it contacts the body forcefully, the piping gets stressed a lot higher, and things like header gaskets and collector gaskets in particular end up with short lifespans.

Are there any plans to include a short length of flexible tubing? I'm not thinking of the cheap stuff that's hardly better than dryer hose, but stuff similar to what the OE's use to accommodate engine rocking in transverse FWD cars.

If you knew what my day job was, you'd be entitled to ask why I didn't think to comment earlier.

Norm

yes i understand your comments and i was thinking of adding a flex coupling, as well as there will be more clearance around the opening. Now you have me curious about your day job??????

Power plant piping stress analysis. Sometimes the plants have signs here and there that look something like this.

jackfrost
12-18-2008, 11:14 AM
just an idea, but what if the outlet that is molded into the body is not connected to the actual exhaust pipe, but the pipe just sort of dumps into the outlet? maybe it could be mounted to the outlet with hangers to keep it from rattling.

GrabberGT

The black with more sidewall gives it more of a muscle look. Thats my vote.

LeighP
10-01-2009, 08:00 AM
Either way looks good...I'd usually go for more sidewall, less diameter on the wheels, but those particular 20's look good on your car.

gt350rc
10-01-2009, 11:58 AM
I gotta vote for the 18's. I agree, maybe if the 20's had a bit more of a sidewall, it'd look better.

Longchamp
10-01-2009, 02:26 PM
18's for sure, the more sidewall the better, never been a fan of the ribbed 'o-ring' look.

jfoster
10-02-2009, 05:43 AM
I'm a fan of the true race look. The 20's are too much "bling" and not enough function, IMO. Either way, maybe a spacer to get the wheels a little more flush?

18's for sure... Not a fan of too much bling.

Norm Peterson
10-03-2009, 07:26 AM
Ignoring the color difference and visibility of the rear rotors as best I can . . . the 20" wheels still look too big for the car.

But I can't quite decide why, whether it's the proportion between the visible sidewall and the wheel's outer diameter (ignoring the rest of the car), or if it's because the 20" wheel is itself almost tucked up under the fender (regardless of how much sidewall). Probably it's a little of each.

12-16-09 Ok time for an update...The company i bought the rear brakes from dropped the ball and sent the wrong ones so after a 3 week wait they showed up ..i built up the rear end and installed it under the car ..had to refabricate the new upper and lower mounts as well as relocate the coil overs and mounting set up.. and reset the rear...once the rear was back where I wanted it I ordered a custom made drive shaft (only 44" long)....as for the interior I had to remove all the sheetmetal that I had already fabricated for the stock looking interior, as i changed the direction the interior I was going..it will now be all black leather and power, lets just say im bringing some new touches into the old..I will post pics when its all installed....
Here are some pics..
Here is the upper mounts that were made from 1/4 steel plate as u cant just buy fabricated mounts for a late model setup onto a 9 inch

Not being negative, but wouldn't putting a heavy 302 severely affect the power to weight ratio and force a complete re-engineering

Wow, hats off to you sir! This build is phenomenal, it's a good thing you took all the pics, because most people wouldn't believe it was built in your garage :fingersx:

Can't wait to see the finished product.

Ok opinions needed..do i paint the front and rear window mouldings black..leave them stainless stock looking..or scotch brite them giving a brushed aluminium look ???????

Personally, I would think that the brushed or nickel plated look would really focus attention on the paint.

maybe I missed it somewhere in the thread, but what's the significance of the "57"?

BTW, that is AWESOME paint. Great job!

I think the trim in chrome or brushed would look excellent, but, would give it a "classic" car look. So if that's what you are after, great. Personally, the car is very sleek and modernized. I would black out the trim, so the car looks up to date and happens to look like a Mustang rather then a Mustang with a fancy paint job. It is already to custom to look like a classic.
By the way, GORGEOUS car.

the siginificance of the 57 will be explained in a guessing comp with a prize at the end when the car is totally finished....

Thats a good guess, but the number 57 is not based on an old race car.....
