What kind of siding? We deal with most all kinds except vinyl. We do a little bit of it here and there but mostly Hardi siding and shakes, cedar shakes, and various other wood profiles.

The cost of siding these days is so messed up that to compare without using brand names is a tough call. Cheap crap is everywhere along with poor installation.
Hardy siding is the best I have seen and the cost to install because of the extra labor puts it out of budget for most. If you can install it yourself, something anyone can learn in a day with tips from a pro you will be happier for as long as you live. The extra insulation and sound deadening along with the flying debri protection it gives is worth every extra $, it also makes your house structurally stronger too.
Vinyl siding is the worst stuff for longevity and looks and will give you no insulation value or structural integrity either. It just plain sucks.
Cedar siding is also a very good choice in the right climate.
The climate you live in makes a big difference on the need for a good choice. Hardy is a good choice for all environments.
You will also help keep me in a job if buy Hardy siding as the company I work for processes the epoxy coatings. So I might be a little biased but I liked the stuff long before I ever got the job.
After 10 years a friend of mine who put Hardy on an addition to his garage in a spot low and by the dirt has had absolutely no sign of problems and it looks as good as the day it was put up. Even at double the price it would be worth it.
Just so you know, I have put up every kind of siding and Hardy is what is going to replace the cheap ass vinyl the cheapskate put on the house I bought.
I hope this helps in your choice.
The actual cost of installation is something that really pisses me off since most salesmen or companies don't want to pay installers a good rate these days. I was making $40 -$45 a square back in the late 70's early 80's and they don't even pay some of the guys that now. I got paid that well because the quality of work was reffered and demanded by the customers of the man I worked for and we were always busy when eveyone else was out work. Yes he made a little less by sharing it with us but we always had happy customers!
If you really want to get a deal, go to a site where the installers are doing a superior job and hire them on the side. You buy the materials and pay them well to install it and you will be way far ahead by eliminating the salesman and the company. Some companies charge $200 per square just for labor :hammer:
Goodluck with your choice.
