I see some talk about using a single corvette style fuel line and some systems using a return line as well.

My '72 firebird already has a factory return line, but does this really help me out in any way? Obviously it was meant for hose clamps, so I doubt it would be good enough for the pressures of the FI pump. I'm trying to decide to pull them out or not while my subframe is out.

I think only the early 97-98 corvette ls1's had a return line from the engine fuel rail. If your ls1 does not have a return line in the engine fuel rail then you will need to use the vet filter regulator and it is best to locate it as close to the tank and pump as possible. If that be the case you can use your return line to connect to the filter regulator. Clamps work ok even on FI. The return side is usually low pressure anyway. If you use hose on the hi side be sure it is hi psi hose.

All post 98 vettes returned back by the tank.

Hell, f-body Camaros (99-02) returned inside the tank. I return back by the tank and have zero issues.
