View Full Version : Billet Gauge Bezels: SEMA Preview

My fellow pro-touring.com members get a special preview of our new product introduction for SEMA 2008: Billet Gauge Bezels for Auto Meter Gauges. If non-functional billet parts offend you, hit the back button now! Our billet gauge bezels will not make your car faster. They WILL make you feel like a rock star every time you get behind the wheel--as though you commissioned Johnson Hot Rod Shop, Ring Brothers, or Rad Rides to build you a one-off, hyper-detailed masterpiece.

The long story (...sorry :dunno: ): We've been working on this concept for a coupla years--ever since I laid eyes on Bob Johnson's SMOY winning, high dollar 'cuda with design work by Chris Ito. That car floored me. Chris and Alan Johnson, integrated design touches throughout the car. Chris Ito's work inspired me to make high end custom styling details available to everyone. The result is our ProStyle™ line of accessories. And these Billet Gauge Bezels are, by far, my favorite product in the line up. Just some silly rings? Simple to make? Noooo.... They've proven to be the most challenging design in our line-up. The "Monkey See Monkey Do" types can forget about walking over to their CNC machines and just pushing the big green button.
Special machine tooling was developed to yield an ultra compact, seamless integrated part. Over 90% of the slug mass is removed in the machining process. Two patents are pending: One for the process and another for the design. My fanged, rabid intellectual property lawyers only added to the delays. They're finally done. Ordering will be added to our e-commerce site as soon as we get back from SEMA.
Here are the details:
-Fits Most Auto Meterฎ Gauge Sizes and Series
-Available for 5", 3-3/8", 2-5/8" and 2-1/16"
-Easy Install - Super Adhesive “DOTS”
-Choose Polished/Brushed Finish or Black Anodized
-Sold Individually or as “Dash Paks” that are perfect for Covan Classics and other gauge clusters.

I won't be able to shoot real in-dash pix until after SEMA. In the meantime, I shot a coupla crappy cellphone pix before leaving for the airport.
We'll be happy to delete the holes. By request only--so give us a call. I'll set a firm delivery date after SEMA. The matching cowl trim plate idea is great. We'll get on that.
Thanks everyone.

Alright boys and girls, we've been thrashing to get our Billet Gauge Bezels made after a wildly successful response at SEMA. We're very excited. The good news is that orders will start shipping on Monday. However, there's already a backlog of orders from SEMA, so please allow 7-10 days for shipment. It's NUTS! Orders will be processed in the sequence that they are received and your card will NOT be charged until date of shipment. In the meantime, we'll keep thrashing over the weekend to run off parts and polish 'til our fingers bleed. Did I mention how excited we are? Ho Ho Ho, Yo!.

Please feel free to use our secure online ordering. Follow one of the links below. We'll work hard to ship as fast as we can and tracking numbers will be provided for all online shipments.

Matt

Matt,
They stick on. First we generated custom tooling so that the back side of each bezel confirms perfectly to the stock bezels. Then, we found some really cool silicone based adhesive dots that stick like crazy. So clean your gauge bezels, apply the super dots, line up the billet bezels, and press them on. Each bezel or kit ships with a roll of adhesive dots. Instructions will also show, with pictures, how to use clear silicone from a tube, if you want permanent installation.

We explored a number of options:
1) Set Screws: Damage the stock gauge bezel surface and would be visible at certain angles.
2) Split Ring: Then we came up with this cool press fit split ring design. (One ring for the front and another from behind with a tolerance fit). But this method takes up a lot of room--like .300"-combined between gauges. So they don't work with kits like those available from Covan's. Plus they looked bulky and forced you to take your dash apart. Running clearance between gauges proved to be the biggest challenge.
3) Bezel Replacement. Stock Auto Meter gauges have a crimped on bezel. The bezel can be cut off, but the average enthusiast could end up wrecking his gauges in the process. We're one of the few companies that guarantees out of the box installation, so this was not an option.
So we put in a lot of head scratching for some simple rings. In the end, custom machine tooling and adhesive turned up a product that looks integral and is easy to install. The machine tool process is intricate enough that we applied for one design patent and one utility patent.

I took lots of pix. But none of them seem to do the parts justice. We polished before anodizing, so these things are BLACK. And like black holes, they keep sucking up the camera's light. Maybe I'm just too critical of my photography. Here's a pic just to show that they are in stock and shipping. The second pic shows polished bezels on a 69 Covan cluster.

Steve Chryssos
03-20-2009, 06:18 AM
Thanks everyone. Bret, the Goodguys Nova was located in the booth next to ours at SEMA. I was constantly using it as a demonstrator for the bezels. They looked insane on that dash--especially with the dash lights glowing thru. Please be sure to get me some pix of the bezels installed.
Thank you.

Here's a shot of a complete install we did for Chicane Sport Tuning--A Mustang Specialist firm in Torrance, CA. The cluster is made by Mustang 5.0 in FL. Unlike the Covan stuff, this particular application requires custom clearancing of of each bezel.
As opposed to the "extreme close-up" photos I've posted so far, this photo puts the bezels in the context of a full dashboard. I'm having a tough time photographing these buggers. Round and shiny. Pictures do not do them justice. Hopefully Bret can get shoot some better pix for me using his vast resources (Scott)

I can do black as a custom order. The no hole jobs will be cheaper, and demand is really limited, so supply will be limited as well. Likewise, we're trying to keep the options down. Anyone who has seen the holes in person (as opposed to internet photos) wants holes.

The Bezels w/o holes worked great. I had to do a bit of trimming to get them to fit around the tac adjustments. Thanks for a great product!

Those look great. You did a nice job with clearancing on the tach bezel. Thanks for posting the pic. No hole bezels have been in stock for a while--and they are less expensive than the standard "with hole" versions.

Maybe i am crazy. But those holes are really ulgy!

No problem. 98% of the bezels go out the door with holes. So most people like them with holes--especially after seeing the bezels in person.

Either way, the bezels bring real aluminum accents to your Auto Meter gauges and dash.

steve,

I am sticking with the stock gauge panel on my 68, check out the thumbnail.

Have you had anybody install them in the stock center gauge panel. Do the Bezels fit in the tunnels?

I ask becuase I have only seen them on the flat planels.

Thanks!

I'll take some pix of my dash today or tomorrow. At the moment, my car is running no hole bezels in the stock speedo/tach cluster.

I see that Rick's is now carrying your stuff, including the no holes sets. Very cool!

Any chance of getting black anodize? with holes?

Thanks

Sure we have a batch going to the anodizers tomorrow, so get that order in. And we found a great new anodizer here in Daytona. We polish the bezels first and then anodize them. So they look extra black and beautiful.
