View Full Version : 1968 Bizzarrini Corsa/LS7 / C6 underpinnings

It was an Italian sports car built by an ex Ferrari engineer(1960 250 G T O ) in the 60's. They had Corvette drivetrains and aluminum bodies. When the Corvette got big blocks so did the Bizzarrinis. The later (1968) superlight weights had glass bodies. The Gt America's also got the glass bodies. Plans for modern chassis, LS7, vintage style. 1/15/09 I picked up the remnants for my next project finally last Thurs. It's been in this storage unit since 1979 or 80. I have all the parts less front of chassis, engine ,trans. I have the glass, doors, hood, trunk lid, dash, the original Bizzarrini gauges. I'm spec'ing out the chassis bids and plan on another LS7, but I found quickly the next time I looked it over after that "Christmas" morning, Deer inthe Headlight feeling of bringing it home. The T-56 won't work in this car! The engine set back is so extreme, the shifter would be behind you! So I'm going with the TKO with the first shifter location just 7.02" behind the mount to the bellhousing. That'll do it.... Will update as I get going. Allready got OEM NOS taillights from Greece. Ordered some re-pop turn signal lenses and Talbot style mirrors.....

http://www.dupontregistry.com/autos/Search/DRauSearchDetails.aspx?itemid=247960 I found a body only, missing some trim and stuff. I figured for a PT car not a Concourse resto I could fab what was missing. They guy told me $17,000. Word of mouth, some guy( a real car guy,who can spend $100,000 plus 2 or $300,000 more to make it a legit $700,000 car) bought it for $95,000 . It was an aluminum body. I found out the later Corsa cars(track) went from aluminum to fiberglass the last two years of production as Super Lightweights (Superleggera) Plus , they were G.M. and mine still will be.

awesome looking project! would be incredible looking with updated wheels and drivetrain. I'm thinking 18" max to clear the C6 stuff, 17" if they'll fit. I want to have a wheel that looks like the old Italian style cast wheels but not in 14" or 15". Update to a more contemporary size. (Foose?, Rushforth?, listening?) Can't load any more pics, see previous replies......

Seen a small segment on the Speed channel "My Classic Car" I beleive. They showed one at a car show, Pebble Beach? and it was the first time I seen one of these. It was a different body style tho had a verticle rear window with what looked like headrest pods going back to the rear of the car. The guy said they were brake cooling ducts and the air and under carriage air was then exhausted back up to the top between the pods to remove undercarriage lift. Said it was ahead of its time. Maybe someone can find that video.
I like the style of yours alot more than that one. Sleeker. They showed that in order to get to the distributor you had to go thru an access hole in the top of the dash behind the windsheild, like where a defroster vent usually would be. The motor is way back in there.
P.S. x2 on the photobucket for adding pic to your threads. Bigger pic and you don't keep getting told you have to many pics in threads already. Pretty easy to use once set up.

I went to "55 MPH Schnieder" Freight Depot and picked up my LS7 crate motor. I talked to Kyle @ DSE at the Goodguys OC and finalized some needed dimensions for my chassis. I'm concentrating on blocking the body, re-mounting all the doors, hood, trunklid, and glass. Then I'll start on the chassis assembly. I had done more chassis measurements to determine driver and floorpan positions and heights, as well as the huge original engine set back. ( 34" to back of block from frt. axle centerline !) I had some track issues to define also, wheel offsets will cover that. Kyle's stuff is working, and has the desired charateristics in movement and camber gains I want. Why re-invent the wheel, I did that on my '62. Cutting and redoing the front suspension three times until it reacted like I wanted. The hard work has been done and is definetly getting proven week in and week out at the Goodguys Events!

I set up a jig frame for the body. I set it to centerline, then worked from the rear of the rockers forward leveling left to right & front to back. The right front fender/nose was drooping from having crap piled on it for 30 years, but once it was squared up and stabilized it came right back to position. I'll mount the jig to a rotisserie this week, then start re-hanging the doors, hood and trunk lid.
So what happened to the '62? Did you ever paint it? Did you sell it? That is such a cool car. So is the Bizzarini. (so many cool project name possibilities with a name like Bizzarini - the obvious one being:

I want to pull it apart and cage it then paint , but I'm driving it (17,000 mi since the LS7 went in last spring) and enjoying it. It's been a while since I posted.... I spent the summer making what I had perfect, then realized once I started the chassis layout, I just wasn't happy with the stance. The little peculiar flares were really quite useless. If the tires were in position in the wheel opening to look right they interfered with the wheel travel. To miss made it sit to high, and to move the wheel inboard ( as some of the street versions were) made in look like it belonged working as a railroad service car!! LOL I referenced the Corsa/race versions that were not slab sided like the street cars. They were more volumpuous and coke bottle shaped. SO I CUT OFF ALL FOUR CORNERS AND STARTED OVER!!!! I made all four quarters like the Le Mans cars. Bulbous and broad shouldered. The stance is now perfect and will accomadate 265/35-18 frt and 345/30-19 rear tires! I'm working on the details of blocking it out straight then will recast in carbon fiber.

Yeah, but I used photos of actual race cars for precidence, as to not just pull the mods out of thin air....LOL! But of the hundreds of pictures I've collected and the actual cars I've seen and photographed, being "coach built" and by several builders, nearly no two are alike. Even with production numbers of 139 or so, it was like they coachbuilder made three, the the next batch they said, "How did we do this?, Well let's do it this way..." I saw several side by side, all had different profiles, vents, lights, door handles, turn up to the windshield base, rises to the side of the backglass, door handles, ect., ect.... They said no Iso A3/C's were made in fiberglass, yet I found pictures of the earlier Iso styling in glass, though some experts said it was not done until the later Corsa cars, then the GT America's built for the states. Original importor was Corvette racer John Fitch, he shortly thereafter handed it off to a firm in New York....

There's no room, the tranny would intrude on the seat area. The motor is back under the dash with an acess panel, the block is beside your calf and the tranny is nearly behind you. I've got a line with Quaife for a sequential six-speed from the Le Mans spec Vipers... Glass first to check the molds, then Carbon once dialed in. I also have aluminum honeycomb, sandwiched in Carbonfiber for the tunnel area, and floor structures, lined with balistic rated Propex Fabric to protect the drivers compartment from any possible fragmentation at the track.

Other than some up-to-date wheel sizes, I want it to look vintage correct with the correct lights, lenses, Talbot mirrors, ect. To fit the big brakes I have to go bigger on the wheels too. Target weight is 2300 lbs. tops, may come in less with some of the composites.

I'm torn, but the first one I'll probrobly have electronic replicas done of my OEM Bizzarrini guages... I have both an early style dash with three pods on top above the wheel, speedo and tach at center of dash. I have the later style dash as well, but it's just a flat wood panel with the gauges in a row, followed by a row of toggle switches... very Italian, very early Ferrari-ish too. The earlier style I like best, (more racers had that style) and is correct for this car.

very cool. I like how you modified the one body to build the molds and make the shell you are using. Going to be a fun car! Are you going to start producing that shell?

Such a great build. Even though it may not be authentic or period correct, I think i'd opt to spray it the gulf racing powder blue with orange and white stripes. Then i'd go buy me one of these :

I'm seriously envious of the biz.

What an awesome job your doing here. My build has me wondering whats next some times never mind something this involved. Your a true craftsman. I like #1 or 2.
Glad to know this is moving along nicely. Love the wheels. I think those will really set the car off and cause people to take a second look. As for paint schemes, I dig the red with blue and white stripe(#1) or the second one. Keep up the great work.

Super cool build. Very one of a kind.
Hah!!! for now... I've done substantial work and investment with CNC,EDM,molds, jigs, parts aquirement to build low volume turn-key minus cars....( replicas of Cobras range from 12 g to over 140 g, but no one has done a replica or recreation of the Iso/Bizzarrini. Though there are a few craftsmen in Europe who still knock out tin of exact 250 SWB's, GTO's, 250 California's, and an occasional Bizzarrini... if you have a spare $300-400,000) Building, duplicating, engineering and making everything repeatable has really stretched out the build/manufacturing pre-process. So once shocks and sway bars settings are dialed in.... cars can be done in about two months... Several offers from overseas... but not commiting until done, and all molds, settings, parts aquirements,& jigs finalized after a vigorous run through...

Those Campagnolo are EPIC, and this project would be worthy of reverence just for them. That it's no more than a small detail of the overall build just goes to show how flippin' awesome this car is.
I first noticed these wheels when I read an old article about Bob Wallace's original Miura Jota. They are far and away my favorite classic cast wheels on any car and I always thought it was unfathomable that, with all the minilite, fuchs and other replica wheels, no-one had managed to reproduce these.
Respect!

I did a quick faux finish/barn find finish (what else?? LOL!!) for a quickie under-construction display in the "Dynamat" booth... Scott asked me two weeks ago... so I did a minor course correction.... instead of the chassis going off for the certified cage and header work... I finished the plug for the tub and pulled molds, made a quick triangulated tow hook assembly at the front with a Pratt& Miller C6 Racing tow hook ( thanks Mike!!), push structure at the back (which will be part of the cage structure when it comes back...), plumbed the front brakes (for getting out of the trailer..), No word on EVOD wheels being done so it's going in the trailer with the chassis table ZR1 wheels.... :( and of course added "Dynamat" to the whole works... pics tonight as in goes in the trailer... leaving Monday AM....

From my Droid this morning.....Geez, I need tiny fingers to do the wi~fi screen to post!!! The car was on the chassis table Friday, and I put it on the ground after work for the first time... Hung the doors Saturday, and prepped the still untouched body with flash & parting lines..(I had simply been using. It for measurements & fitment) Sunday my buddy Arron came over & helped (LS3build on it's way)doing the "Dynamat" installation while I quickly knocked off the flash & parting lines..I "faux" painted as. It was getting dark out....I wasn't real happy with the contrast between the (two) shades I shot... the "sunburned" color need to be more orange...but what can you do at 6:30 pm thenightbefore SEMA ??? LOL!!! It actually looks OK...now that I scotch brited all the peach fuzz & flash off the finish..( high acetone content so it would be dry enough to push on to get it in the trailer !!!) Anyhow....in and set-up...

If you don't mind me asking ( and It would be awesome if you could respond openly or shoot me a private message ), what do you think that you have into the molding process?
The reason that I ask is that I found a car that is in this same sort of mythical Italian/US partnership class( although not as awesome as a biz, but much more in my price range). I'd love to do a build like yours, but i'd hang myself for taking an amazing barn find of a super rare car and chopping it up to make the racecar that i'd want it to be.
for reference, i found a ford osi, that has been sitting in a barn since 1970 on a farm in a rural town. The owner wont sell it to me yet, but he will!

Well I've been busy since SEMA.... I leased a building for a shop (a first for me) from a car buddy... I've been setting it up, but basically I've been taking a break... It's been like 3 years of 40+ hr a week engineering "day" job, as well as an easy 28 -32 hr weekend "vision quest" to build my own car from the ground up.... With help from my dear friend Pat, he gave me a place to work and see my vision through while not stifling my escalating tooling, build, & design cost by letting me work at his shop at his home.... Now I got a lift & a chassis table, adding lighting, air compressor, and moving all my supplies, tooling, molds, jigs, ect. under one roof and out of the storage units I was aquiring as what it takes to do a startup from the ground up... SEMA was a rush and unexpected.... but my target customers couldn't belive what I had done or the fact it was so high-tech and engineered...They "got" the Bizzarrini/Iso lineage... The modern composite, engineered chassis and drive train, and like me revelled in the fact it had stayed true to a vintage feel in outward apearance... (Save for the "huge" wheels...LOL!!) some of the hot rod types questioned what kind of Corvette kit car was it..... Any how I got my new wheels yesterday from Larry @ EVOD Industries!!! Larry (Dove) & Mike Curtis really made some jewelry out of these wheels... Taking my vision and making it real, dealing with my tweek of profile here... angle of the cut of the windows in the wheel here... PERFECT!! After being that I gave them free reign over the spinners...just three spoke, not really specific as I had been very precise in what I visioned for the wheels... Of course once the design was sent over ... it had a little twist to the spoke design.... then I said, " Don't we have left and right hand threading on the knock-offs? Well I think they should be oriented someway as well in the design." Yah, you're right... I think their quest for perfection mimic'd my drive to a vision.... I think I got some car buddy friends out of the process as well..

I put it back into the chassis jigs, set-up to be able pull the body at the new shop & puylled it off to re-configure the rear bulkhead in the tub buck to fit the twin C6 fuel tanks in (@ the floor level behind the seats) and loose the fuel cell I had mocked up above the rear axle line... I fitted the wheels on just to take a look... but have some time yet before deciding final finish/color choices... Tooling to do for door window frames, headers, and headlight covers... At that point ready to come apart for final ceramic, powdercoat, & paint finishes and final assembly... 6 more months probably... :6gears:

Same company...
At the end of the 1950s, Campagnolo started to manufacture magnesium parts such as wheels for sports cars like Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Maserati, and built chassis for NASA satellites in 1969.[3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Campagnolo#cite_note-3) In 1963, Campagnolo produced a disc brake for the Innocenti (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Innocenti) Lambretta (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lambretta) TV motorscooter - the first two-wheel production vehicle with such a brake. In the 1970s they also supplied wheels for Ferrari's Formula One cars.[4] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Campagnolo#cite_note-campyonly.com-4)
