Alright the deal is you buy a car on craigslist....it is a roller basically.Body work is done. A 40 year old car with no motor / tranny. Rear end is there but you don't know condition.

Now you have 10,000 dollars to spend in total. Motor/tranny/suspension the whole works. Work is done by yourself. You aren't going to be building a show car...more like a track beast. Paint is not included in the 10,000 budget.

Now....

Begin.

What car you would chose: For experimental purposes pick something 75 and older.

What you would do with that 10,000:

This should be interesting...

I guess I forgot to specify it had to be a pre-75 car because of nazi smog laws out here :P.

Chevy Vega with a v6/6 speed. Or one of those motors out of a Soltice or Cobalt. Don't know what else I would do to it but that would be one heck of a commuter.

Thats a good idea actually....Thinking about it...maybe a datz 240z with a turbo-charged ecotech.

2nd gen Camaro (I am biased, lol) or Firebird. Strip down a 99-02 4th gen for drivetrain & brakes, seats & seatbelts, maybe other knick knacks.

Super clean, rust free Vega. MustangII front suspension and rack, home-built 3-link and frame connectors, coil overs, Wilwood discs. Basic white exterior with maybe a flat black hood. Bare bones black interior (think cheapie Summit seats with the backs cut down and re-covered, console from a 60's Corvette, yank out the carpet and spray in some bed liner material. Powered by a freshened up junk yard aluminum block 5.3 and 6spd. All dropped down on a set of 17" Bassett style black racing wheels.

2nd gen camaros are a given, there are so many circle track parts available for this body style.
If this was a track beast I'd say a 350 gen 1 SBC with a used nascar trans. you dont need overdrive on the track.

TRANS musclemotorsports has richmond 4 spd's for $1450 and muncies for $550, tilton and quartermaster clutches for $275, quartermaster bellhousings for $125, and driveshafts for $75

ENGINE $2000-2500 depending on oiling system can get you 450 hp easy with a gen 1 sbc with $1000 used aluminum heads

REAR, once again musclemotorsports, 60" full floater, $250 for a housing, $550 for a detroit locker center section.

FRONT SUSPENSION speedway control arms $50 each, 600-650 lb springs, that leaves fuel system and cage and paint.
CAGE this depends on your fab skills, order the cage up, prefit and tack it in yourself and find a qualified tig welder to do the final welding. musclemotorsports nascar bladder fuel cell 22 gallon $250 used past certification date, much safer than what youll get out of summit.
PAINT single stage shoot it yourself, if youre racing hard youll need to learn how to reshoot a fender

It is doable, the cheapest pre75 cars around here are Novas.Look in the junkyards for 6.0 Silverado engines and trans 4l80e,usually pick up a low milage one for about $2500 with harness. If you have any build skills,it can be done, really have to watch for the deals.Ron
