Riley Technologies Selected to Build Camaro for KONI Challenge

Mooresville, NC (12 August 2008) - The legion of Chevrolet Camaro fans will have a new place to focus their enthusiasm starting next January at Daytona International Speedway, as the legendary V8-powered classic Chevrolet performance machine will return to competition in the Grand-Am KONI Challenge GS Class in 2009.

Riley Technologies has been named the exclusive builder for the Camaro for KONI Challenge competition. The entry will be closely based on the highly anticipated all-new 2010 Camaro, which was recently officially unveiled simultaneously at the GM Tech Center in Warren, Michigan, and GM West Coast Advanced Design Studio North Hollywood, California, GM.

By entering the KONI Challenge, the Camaro will be competing head to head against a world-class field of production-based racers. The category has established itself as key showcase for both driver and product capabilities, and has enjoyed tremendous fields thanks in part to a SPEED television presence as well as a rules package that keeps cost containment a constant focus.

With that philosophy in mind, Riley will be offering four configurations for teams to select from, creating additional opportunities for teams at varying levels of investment to suit team budgets. Teams will be able to select from a complete turn-key race car, a complete unassembled car kit, an unassembled car less purchased parts, and a Riley Technologies Body In White fitted with a roll cage.

We are very excited to be named the exclusive builder of the new Chevrolet Camaro for KONI Challenge, said Riley Technologies VP Bill Riley. We will offer the same level of support for our Camaro KONI Challenge competitors as we do our Daytona Prototype and Rolex GT Class customers. The KONI Challenge is tremendously competitive and we are really looking forward to seeing our customers hit the track starting at Daytona in January.

"The KONI Challenge series is a great venue in which to demonstrate the performance attributes of the new Chevrolet Camaro, said Mark Kent, Director GM Racing. As the exclusive builder of the Camaro for competition in the Koni Challenge series, Riley Technologies will assure the racing version of the Camaro maintains the highest quality standards, is safe and affordable to purchase and operate. With Riley Technologies long history of developing and producing championship winning race cars, we are confident that the Chevrolet Camaro will be a championship contender in the Koni Challenge series."

Riley Technologies has established an excellent record both on the track, and in the paddock. Riley products won both the Daytona Prototype and GT classes of the 2008 Rolex 24 At Daytona, adding to a remarkable record of over 50 victories in the category. A key ingredient in that success has been the high level of service and support that the manufacturer offers its wide customer and competitor base.

The addition of the Camaro to the KONI Challenge GS class has been anticipated since our first peek at the car, and its sure to become an instant fan favorite, said Grand-Am Vice President of Competition David Spitzer. We are glad to support GM Racing, and their selection of Riley as the supplier of both cars and kits. They have a track record of safe and successful race cars, and excellent customer service. Grand Am will work closely with GM Racing and Riley to ensure the Camaro is priced fairly, and with the dedication of Riley we expect to have Camaros on the grid for Daytona in January.

The machine will be delivered ready to race for $130,000, with deposits currently being accepted. Riley will be the only approved manufacturer for the car in KONI competition.

The Grand-Am KONI Challenge GS Class is the top KONI Challenge category. The 2008 KONI Challenge season has seen wins by the BMW M3, Porsche 911, and the Ford Mustang. In addition to racing in support of the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series, the KONI Challenge also holds events in conjunction with the IndyCar Series, NASCAR Canadian Tire Series, as well as staging stand-alone events

For more information or questions, please contact: Bill Riley, (704) 663-6319

Riley Technologies has an extended legacy of success, developing competitive on-track products for the Rolex Sports Car Series, the American LeMans Series, the USAC Silver Crown Series, and the Japanese GT Championship Series.

I wasn't able to find any photos of the car in race trim (probably not built yet). I can't wait to see what it looks like.

It's a bit frustrating that it takes $130K to have competitive equipment in this class these days. Back in '99/2K, you could build a car yourself and run well in this series.

I bet you can still build your own.
It would cost a lot less.

For real race fans, the Camaro GS Racecar Concept should conjure memories of Mark Donahue's blue-and-yellow Trans Am Series Camaro. This modern interpretation features a carbon fiber hood, trunk lid, doors and fenders to keep weight down and is powered by a production LS3 V8 mated to a Tremec 6060 six-speed. A 3-inch exhaust with Coast Fab mufflers, C&R racing aluminum radiator and coolers for the engine oil, transmission and differential round out the racing pedigree.

Now...visualize that on the grid next to the following......

WOW!!!! That Camaro just S****** all over the Mustang & Challenger. For those that didn't agree with the looks of it in production trim, what do you think of it now?

IMO the Mustang is hot in race trim too.

The Chally still looks overinflated. Better in silver than orange though.

That 1st picture makes me think of an angry madman squinting waiting to attack. Like a Transformer gone bad. I like it.

I'll agree the Challenger is bloated but still nice. As for the Mustang, I'm just not a big Ford fan, but I do like the Saleen & the Shelby models.

I've said it before, this car is going to be hard for me to resist. I absolutely can't afford it and it would be totally stupid of me to buy one. I'm serious, I honestly have no business owning this car, whatsoever.

Which probably means there will be one in my driveway this Summer.

I liked the new Camaro so much that I ordered one. I'm also thinking the center console out of the 2010 would look great in my 68...will definitely be watching the junk yards for a wrecked 2010. I'm personally hoping to see some really cool stuff at SEMA this year to personalize the new ride. :)

they say good things come to those that wait but I'm impatient and want one now. Only problem is that the blue color will not be available in the SS model. Thinking of the upgraded paint - red with charcoal stripes. As much as I love my 67 this new beast is a must have. The RS SS comes with almost everything you could want out of a car. The specs are outstanding for a factory production car. The interior you either hate or like. GM has finally got there act together as long as they can get it out to the public before going bankrupt. Still believe they are about two years to late.

If a popular car like the camaro had 20" wheels, you can bet that tire manufacturers are going to support it in the near future. I'll bet that we'll start seeing more 20 inch R-compound tires very very soon.

They probably will make them. They just won't work as well as the same tire in a 17" or 18" dimension. Sidewall compliance is a big factor and it is tough to attain at 18". More so at 20".

GM is just about as likely to not field a car in the series as Chrysler, in fact, the Challenger has already raced the New Foundland Targa race.

GM says it barely has enough money for day to day operations and has all but stopped capiutal spending, there goes your factory/race team relationships.
Mustang is racing, Challenger is racing, Camaro is ??????

I would be curious to know if Cerebrus really NEEDS to sell or they just want to make a quick buck off thier aquisition from Diamler Benz? They aren't public so I don't know where to look.

He He He !
I can't wait.

I heard that the SCCA was going to do 5 or 6 tube- chassis style ( late model ) Trans-Am races this year.
But , they will not be for factory production sedans , like the classic Trans-Ams were.
I think they are actually gonna' be like the last style of cars that ran the Trans-Am. ( Like the "98 models )

Quote from Wikipedia : "In 2009, the SCCA will revive the series based on the GT-1 class and five races have been announced,[4] with former champion Greg Pickett sponsoring the series with the Muscle Milk brand, using the SCCA's GT-1 category rules. "

But , at least they are bringing back the series !
MAYBE if it does well , they'll change over to the current factory production sedans and we'll have the classic Trans-Am all over again.

What I'm hoping is that someone else gets the rights to use the name "Trans-Am" and SCCA lets them promote the races all over again.( On a grand scale )
