a member on here used to make a kit to fill the firewall on 68-72 chevelles. I was hoping someone had his contact info because I lost his email with it. here is a link to his msn page http://groups.msn.com/Project60K69SSMetalWorksPerformanceEngineering/shoebox.msnw

please let me know if you know how to get ahold of him or someone else that makes a kit like that.

Thanks,
Joe

Careful, though...if your bondo doesn't get a hairline crack from all your torque you're going to have to leave this site :enguard:
I couldn't resist...this is usually the part where my mouth gets me in trouble :)

Why not just smooth out the existing firewall? I ask because I'm in the process of having this done within the next few weeks. R.P.

Roger,
The benefits that you will gain by adding a Smooth Kit will add much more rigidity to the firewall structure. As you begin the process you will imeadiatly notice that the factory firewall is very thin metal and and full of small dimples that would require a lot of spot welding and grinding, (watch out for warpage) followed by a considerable amount of filler which tends to crack from heat and the small amount of flexing the body goes through when you drive your car hard. Another benifit that you gain is a much more solid structure in which to mount the larger Air/Heating units that are required to heat and cool the inside of cars our size. The kit will also give you a more solid surface in which to pass front frame struts through that tie into a roll cage if you decide to go that way.

Roger,

There is quite a bit of pre-stress already built into these panels from the factory stamping and body assembly. Kind of like a soda can when you squeeze it. "Tin can" , "oil can" or whatever you would like to call it.

This energy is just waiting to be released. Some good preparation is needed to correctly relieve and relax this stress so the panels can be smoothed.

F1 Speed is correct on the existing firewall. If you take a look at the pictures he posted, from there you can get an idea on how much filler would be needed to fill all of the imperfections if you did not use the smooth panels.

There are quite a few areas that will not allow you to gain enough access to properly work out the material as needed. Hence the use of the panels to eliminate this costly extra work.

I hope this answers your questions, if not please give us a call and we will be glad to answer any questions you might have.

Thanks

Brent,

Thanks for the cool thumbs up on the firewall panels. There is some minor cutting, stress relieving and prep work involved before the installation of the panels. But just like any other aspect of body work it is to be expected.

Yes! For the most part the panels do get welded over the top of the existing firewall. But... If you are looking to completely cut out the existing firewall and add a whole new panel across the face, then you would be opening a completely different bag of snakes.

I hope this information helps. Please give us a buzz and we will be glad to answer almost any question you might have. jk

Thanks

I just finished with the Kit and was happy. Saved me time and money. Kit makes it easy .. didn't have to think much. I started to smooth the original firewall without welding in new sheet metal ... way to much filler was required. Order kit .. easy install (and I suck at welding - novice). Kip and Metal works have continued to try and answer all of my beginner questions. It will end up looking like a professional job. Thanks!

Kip (www.metalworksperformance.com (http://www.metalworksperformance.com)) spent some time with me on the phone walking me through this and other aspects so I have to give very positive product experience .. things are turning out great with the firewall kit. I'ts my first try at this so I feel pretty happy things are looking as good as they are ... just to help I've included a before picture - and then a picture of the kit now 90% done I'm working out some small details on it and prepping the whole car for paint.... I'll post a final shot after paint. Oh - just to confirm something that has been said --- firewall is MUCH stronger now - and I only had to use finizing glaze to get it to the point below.
