Are you ever going to drag/road race your car? Most sanctioning bodies and racetracks do not allow cars with shaved handles to race. If there is an accident, it's a possibility that the safety crew couldn't open the doors.

X2. I just posted about the same thing this morning with a member of MalibuRacing.com who was contemplating shaving the handles.

I'm not a guy who normally says "don't do that"... but I'll make an exception now. Don't do it!
See Craig's comments above.

Instead of shaving use a later model flush mounting handle such as a 99 Gran Prix, going this way cost more and is more work but its smooth and different.

Removing the door handles is one of the most useless mods you can make to your car in my opinion.
Not only for the reasons pointed out above, but what are you going to do if the battery on your car dies and the door latch soleniods won't operate? I do know some are cable operated and don't need soleniods.
The notion that a protruding door handle detracts from the overall clean look of a car just doesn't jive with me. Most of the popular '60s and '70s cars have a pretty nice looking chrome handle of the type that you just don't see on newer cars. I personally can't understand why anyone would think they're so ugly that they need to go to all the trouble and expense to shave them. To do it properly isn't just a quick and easy deal.
Very difficult to undo once done, half the time you're better off simply replacing the doors rather than to try to undo whatever cutting and welding was done to shave them off.
Definitely not a selling point either for the most part, you'll drive off a lot of potential buyers who actually like having door handles if it's ever time to sell.
If your car has shaved door handles, don't take offense.
It's all a matter of taste, but I think it's a waste of time and effort for no gain.

I don't know... the question you raise concerning "...what are you going to do if the battery on your car dies and the door latch solenoids won't operate?" doesn't really work. How do you get in a new Corvette if the battery is dead? It uses door handles that operate solenoids. Still, I have no problem with your points, and if someone is going to race their car, they should probably not shave the handles.
On the other hand, I will not be racing my car, and I did shave the door handles. The biggest problems is finding a place inside the door to put the solenoid so that it does not interfere with anything else in the door, and then finding a way to route the linkage. It is perfectly doable, but it definitely takes some thought.
Shiny Side Up!

Funny you should mention the new Corvettes.
I knew someone would.
I was at my friend's body shop the other day and they had a couple of newer 'vettes there.
They were messing around charging the battery on one of them just so they could open the doors.
