View Full Version : MotiV8r needs a 5 point harness. Help me pick one.

I am in need of a 5 point harness for MotiV8r and quick. There will be a cross bar in the cage and the seats have been modified to have an anti-submarine hole.

I don't know what locks work better, who makes a reasonable priced version, something that will go nice with the black leather Arizen seats and will fit my gut. I don't want to cheap out yet I can't afford the million dollar belts.

There are many threads on the forum I have read but I need opinions and quick. I only have about 2 weeks to place an order.

What should I avoid? What is a must have?

Thanks everyone ahead of time.

I used these in my Formula:

Cam lock makes them more user friendly.

It looks like they only have 4 and 6 point units. I do like Sparco though. I guess I need to look at the hole in my seat and see if I can get the two crotch straps to work? I do like the 6 strap idea better.

Are most belts adjustable enough for my size? I have been in the DSE first gen and a couple of the Air ride cars and I think I just barely made it into the belts.

I use the Crow brand belts in the Lola, the old latch type, very simple, I guess I'm old school.

The Lola seat is very narrow and I don't have room on the sides for adjusters, my hips would hit them, so I have a "center pull" type belt with adjuster built right on the buckle assy. I pull away from the center to tighten them. This type is popular for open wheeled formula type cars.

They can web them longer if you need it, measure around you to the floor anchor points, plus some extra for the adjusters. Re-webbing is required every 5 years by the vintage race groups, that seems to be the new standard. Belts are date coded now and you want to get them with as new a date as possible. MFr's can re-web for a low cost.
Crow used to work for Simpson and stayed in Long Beach when Simpson moved back east. There are lots of other good brands in LA too.

Get 3" shoulder harness, and I like the "Y" type antisubmarine strap 6 point type, you can anchor them from the same place as the lap belt anchors. A single "ball breaker" strap usually needs to be anchored under the seat and the seat has to have a hole for it.

Food for thought, almost all 6 point racing belts are not DOT legal. I have heard one brand is, but don't know which it is. Putting on 6 point belts to drive a few blocks is a PAIN! I'm thinking of using a 3 point Morris type sytem for street use, and 6 point for track days.

Skip the middle man, and get Schroth (Sparco just puts their badge on Schroth belts). Look into their anti-submarine design shoulder belts. Top notch technology from the best belt in the world.

Larry Been poking around on this. Basically until you go real high end thier all under 200 bucks. One thing to consider is this that I found on Jegs

Note: ''Pull-Up Lap Belt Adjusters'' & ''Pull-Down Lap Belt Adjusters'' indicates the direction that tightens the Lap belt adjuster's. For example, a ''Pull-Up Lap Belt Adjuster'' is always the best choice in a Dragster. It is much easier, and safer, to tighten your belts in an upward motion (towards the Latch & Link) rather than a downward motion (away from the Latch & Link) because of the limited cockpit room.

Thanks everyone for the input. In the end I will put a set of Morris 3 point retractable units and just bolt in the harness when I hit the track. I hope to drive it a lot around town and the harness will be a pain.

I'm with David on the Crows. All of my friend's use them in their off road trucks and Unlimited Buggies, and I have them in the Nova. Simple and fail-proof. http://www.crowenterprizes.com/

I assume I need the wrap around style since I will have a cross bar to wrap it around?

Those are some NICE looking belts but with me single sub belt hole and a cross bar I don't think these will work. I think they are all 6 point minimum.

I'm leaning towards these Crow belts at the moment. The are a 5 point, 3" wide, rotary cam lock, down pull bolt in for $144.96 each. They are the part number Charley suggested.

I also talked to Frank and rather then do the wrap around he can weld tabs onto the cross bar. I like that idea much better.

Just an opinion from someone with a lot of welds on a car... any one of which could cause me a serious problem if it fails:

Use the wraparound belts. No sense in putting your life on a single weld on the crossbar. And... that damned tab will jab you at least once. Maybe more than once.

If your thinking of changing from five point to three point for the street, why not go four point? I think it'll get you in any track event you'll drive in? Maybe I'll get schooled real quick on belts right now... thats ok.
The four point in FUel right now is pretty user friendly and seems to hold you damn tight? You'll be driving on the street most the time, and I assume your track days will be lapping sessions not full on racing.

If I'm talking through my A$$ right now let me know... maybe I need five point?

the nice thing about five point is it hold the lap belts n your thighs, which locks you fown, the 4 points generally slide up onto your stomach some.

If you are in a hurry, Crowe Enterprises is located in Placentia and you can order in person and wait while they put them together. Took me about 20 min to get my new belts.
