this might be a ridiculous question... or a good idea im not sure which yet. the borg warner transfer cases they use in GMC typhoons and Syclones should be able to be retrofitted to another vehicle. like maybe a 70's muslce car? does anyone know what might be involved in something like this? i've got the pro touring mindset and the thought of an AWD muscle car sounds awesome. I just dont know what all parts are involved to make it work.

an underside picture of either the typhoon or syclone showing the drivetrain would really help. especially the front driveshaft portion showing how it all hooks up to the front. :)

I toyed with this idea a couple of years ago. My idea was for and AWD family car in the form of a 65-69 Chevy fullsize wagon so I could go to the snow in style. There are two major obstacles to this path.
First would be a front drive setup on an older car. The engine setback required to accomodate a front axle, IFS or solid, would be difficult to package without major modifications. Cars like the WRX are packaged with horizontally opposed 4-cylinders and AWD transaxles, making for very compact packaging. Scyclones and Typhoons can fudge this with use of a 90* V6 which is shorter in length. Making this work with an V8 would be difficult without severly intruding in the passanger cabin..
Second would concern undercar packaging. If you want your car to ride low, there are issues with how low the transfer case would hang. Moreover, the placement would likely interfere with the floorpan about where the front seats would be located. If you think that Scyclones and Typhoons ride low, they have excellent grond effects that mask just how high that truck really sits.
Other than that, the swap would not be all that disimmilar from any drivetrain swap in a 4X4. Custom driveshafts, linkage for the transmission and transfer case, and fabbing a cradle for the front axle are required. You could even use some of Tyler's AFX spindles with a C5 or C6(?) rear hub for compatibility with a CV axle.
Hope this helps,
Don

graft the front subframe from an AWD Astro van under your car- it's wider than the S truck stuff, and everything is beefier. it looks more like a 1/2 ton pickup than an S10. the steering box and linkage are mounted at a weird angle in the vans, but fixing that would seem to be minor compared to getting everything else put together.
i did some measuring on a 92 AWD Astro i had, the track width was only 1/4" wider than my 74 Monte Carlo.

couple pics. I put a v8 in my typhoon and even moved the engine forward just a tad over stock. Set back isn't an issue, custom oil pan yes.
