I'm not sure why I've never posted my project on Pro-Touring.com just guess I'm lazy....

So figured I'd post it up over here.

When I purchased my Z28, it came with a 396 that someone dropped in at some point and had swapped out for the 302. I was unhappy with the performance and figured I would bite the bullet and do it right.

After spending weeks researching and shopping around local engine builders, crate builders and whatnot, I ultimately decided on the zz502 simply because its a great base for me to build upon. I wanted streetable performance, and not to piss off the neighbors too badly. Keeping the M22...

Car in question:

fast forward to today...

Got a nice surprise from the UPS man last night at 8:15. I felt bad the guy was working so late with such a large delivery. Offered him a beer.

John at CCW is great to deal with. Turnaround time was about 2.5 weeks even with the tropical storms hes been dealing with.

245 fronts 275 rears. 17x8.5 and 17x9.5 No clue on the offsets John knew them off the top of his head.

Can't wait to get them on.

Also have some Recaro Speed S seats on order, schroth 5 points, and a custom crossbar for the belt mounts beneath the rear package tray. Should be a pretty slick setup.

I'm looking forward to be able to drive the car without sliding all over the place in my seat. Maybe now my head won't hit the headliner either

Sorry for the bad cell phone pix. Will shoot the car with a decent camera when the recaros are in.

New leafs, QA1 adjustable rear shocks, Hotchkis rear sway, Hotckis Subframe connectors all new rear stance. Put the wheels on during lunch. One stud was crossthreaded so gonna have to fix that.

It sits a bit high but will settle.

When are we getting together a bunch of camaros to invade some random track event? Its pretty funny the Burbank PD has an autocross track setup right across from my offices right now. They're practicing maneuvers...

I was SO tempted to pull in but I'm not feeling that stupid today.

Gotta play with the QA1 settings. I have them set to 0 and its all floaty. Gonna try 3 clicks on the ride home.

I was at the doctors office one day in the car, and some idiot decided to steal one of the magnetic racing numbers off the passenger door....

Now I only have one racing number so its on the fridge for now. I'm going to order another set for track days, and I can use the spare for the hood.

Once I paint the car, no more stickers or magnetics though.

Nice car.
Years ago I had a gold 69 camaro. One owner straight six. rally wheels. I put a 350 in it and addco bars. Then a dork in a GTO came thru a stop sign and nailed me in the drivers door. The car spun sideways and hit the back of a priests car with the other side, then flipped back out in front of a boogie van, but I steered around it. I said to the punk ' what the %@#* are you doing!!' He said '...uh..it's your fault!'
Car was a writeoff. rear end was squeezed onto top of the tires, but the rear window didn't break, and was sticking out like lamborgini scoops. A co-worker bought it and took it to his farm.

I would have fixed it up something like yours.

Picked up the car from Guldstrand today with the following completed:
Tremec TKO600 5 Speed
SPC Adjustable Upper Control Arms
Rear lowering blocks to bring the back down a little
Tow Hook and bracket to subframe
Custom Headers to fit Lee Manufacturing quick ratio power steering
**** Guldstrands signature and approval to drive it like its stolen.

Watching **** pull the car around and the smile on his face I knew it brought back a lot of memories. He said it'll really step out on you if you stomp on it. He said he really loved the car, and the gas tank was empty.

Always a pleasure speaking with guys like Guldstrand. I asked him to sign the dash, it should be good for about 50 horsepower I think.

**** pulling the car around. It finally sits even with the blocks in the rear.

The new shifter location is taller and farther back which helps because I'm so tall I sit real far back. Shifting is now a breeze and the 5th gear makes it a whole different car. Maybe I'll be able to manage 14mpg on the highway now. Cal speedway soon to see how fast I can get her up to on the main straight. Also ****'s Signature which cuts down lap time.

SPC control arms will help with camber adjustments
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/11/IMG_4242JPG-1.jpg

Front 6 Piston wilwoods. No crossdrilled or slotted. I wanted track reliability not show-touring. I've cracked 4 drilled rotors already with the car.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/11/IMG_4245JPG-1.jpg

So for the next track outing I have power steering, a 5 speed with a lot more top end, proper brakes that won't fade and proper camber for more contact patch. Should be a lot more fun and a whole new experience. I struggled with the car before. It was like trying to wrestle an elefant around the track. Just driving it around town, it drives like a modern car now. The manual brakes feel great, and its nice to have one less thing to go wrong out at the track.

I'm waiting on my Jake's Rod shop aluminum spoiler and then I'll get that mounted. I also need to get an induction setup for the front spoiler so I can mount brake ducting to cool down the front brakes. Then its off to Cal Speedway if I can get it all finished in time. Will be REAL interesting to see what the cars capable on the main straight and turn 1 and 2. Last time I was out there I was topped out in 4th way before the finish line/pits. The proof is in the pudding I suppose.

Mr. Guldstrand is pretty cool guy isn't he? It'd be really easy for him to be rather full of himself [cough *Shebly* cough] but he's pretty much just a regular guy. I met him at Monterey Historics a few years ago and chatted with him for about 45 min while walking around and looking at the T/A cars.

Mr. Guldstrand is one fine gentleman. He's a class act, but also just a regular guy. I bought him lunch off the roach coach at the old building years ago and we sat at the shop picnic table and gabbed for an hour.

When you get a chance it would be great if you could detail the front tow hook setup. Is it a Guldstrand part? How is the bracketry done? etc.... It's a bit hard to see the details in the pics.

Did Guldstrand do the header mods or send it around the corner to Morse?

The car is turning out great!

Jim Nilsen
11-07-2009, 04:02 PM
You bring back memories of the days when Guldstrad and Adams were rivals in the magazines to have the best suspension. You will be lucky to have a genius of handling Camaros get it done right.

It's a great looking car , you should be very proud and very very excited. Keep both hands on the great looking steering wheel as much as possible and hang on.

MUCH better with the new wheels.. just makes the look playa.

now what i want to know is where you got those extended lugs!!

Ok, hilarity will surely ensue from what I am about to say. Those are Phil's nuts. He can supply them with the wheels. Here is a close up pic.

Man, looks stunning with the new wheels. Pleeeeease don't repaint it, but if you do, keep the same color scheme, it's absolutely perfect.

When you get a chance it would be great if you could detail the front tow hook setup. Is it a Guldstrand part? How is the bracketry done? etc.... It's a bit hard to see the details in the pics.

hey Dane... 2nd request for tow hook details... :)

You might have already mentioned it and I love the CCW's you had on the car but you just totally went the nostalgic look of taking a track racer to the street without the 100k look. The lug nuts are a great finishing look but there are 3 companies that make those style but how much did your set-up set you back on the wheels if you don't mind me asking??
