Common Metal Gauge Question

Hey Kids.

I am fairly new to welding and need to get some practice metals. Can anyone tell me what gauge Pontiac used for their floor pans (i have a silver dollar-sized hole to fix) and outer body areas (i.e. doors and quarter pannels). The holes I need to fix are fairly small and probably wouldn't require stamped metals, just small patches.

I am going to try and do this myself for once, instead of dumping 1000s for someone else to do it.

If you practice on 18 gauge or so, you should be alright. The older, "real steel", can be as thick as 15 or 16. The newer Asian stampings can be in the 20 gauge.
