View Full Version : Anybody use the entire harness in a LS conversion?

I am in the process of dropping in a LS1 in my 69. I purchased a donar car for this and have the complete wiring harness from the car. I am planning on using not only the entire engine bay harness with a headlight conversion but the body harness also. I was thinking of a 3rd gen steering column which I believe will be a direct plug into the column. The plan is to splice into the harness at the fuse box and to remove any wires not needed at the fuse box. Anybody here try to use a complete harness in their conversion? I know that I will have to remove a number of wires but I think this will be easier and cleaner in the long run.

i used the factory engine harness and the engine bay fuse harness. it made the swap wasy. i think the whole body harness would be a pain.

I was thinking of the engine bay harness up through to the fuse block then tie in from there to the original harness but I am also thinking of trying to route the entire harness. I am tired of hacking into a 40 year old harness to make up for what is not there or inadequate. I have the entire donar car minus the body. The motor is already in the car and I was to finish the mechanical systems before I start on the harness portion. The only thing I can think of is I need to remove all the abs wiring and I need to add/splice for my autometer gauges unless I decide to use the factory dash but that has not been decided yet. The car was injected already so it is more an engine swap than anything else.

While I didn't do it myself, I have seen it done. CamaroAJ, here on this site did it on a '67. I believe he sold the car, but you may be able to get in contact with him to determine how much work is involved.
I looked into doing it, but when parting out my donor someone bought the harness (minus engine controls) for about the same price I was able to buy an AAW update harness. I ended up with a great harness for very little additional cash. Something else you may think about.

I plan on using a lot of the BCM setup (DRL, keyless entry, etc.) but I have not yet sat down with the diagrams and harness. After I review it I will then decide if I want to move forward.

I used the entire fourth gen harness which allows me to bring in all the features at a later date, Retained accy power, Vats, door chime, headlight chime ( works now ), ect.......

How did this turn out? I bought a wrecked 04 GTO and Im getting ready to make the same swap.
Thanks!

I've got the whole 4th-gen harness for mine, but I haven't started putting it in yet. Using the 4th-gen steering column too, so I'll have the cruise control, etc. on the column.

I'm using the entire engine harness, relay center, pcm, bcm and fuse panel on my 04 GTO interior into my 69 Firebird T/A vert. It was very laborious (sp?). The manuals were not very accurate in identifying the various connectors. Once I worked through that and finished, the engine fired the very first time. I spent a lot of time hiding wires in the engine bay so that took a lot of time shortening and lengthening wires, and eliminating circuits. Use as many of the components from the donor car as you can, i.e. wiper motor, cruise, a/c, cooling fans as possible. Then you won't have to scratch your head trying to figure out what wire will work with the old components.

Sam, nice work and photos. Of all the fab jobs on my car, I enjoyed the wiring the most.

John,
Thanks for the compliment. I enjoyed the wiring also, and I got a kick out of seeing the systems come on line as we started the engine for the first time.

Hahaha, yah, its going to be a journey alright.
Im going to start working on this in a few weeks.
Someone bought the donor car and is picking it up this weekend.
When I have the room all hell is going to break loose on this conversion.
