-----------------------------------------------------------------

All in due time. We do have the body (steel portion) on the frame now. Dummy block is in. Engine is setback a good 6" (might be a bit more...I havent actually measured yet). 542ci Pontiac, procharged, etc. 6 speed and an aluminum 9". There will be a rear seat, but with the minitub to keep the tires well under the car, only be room for one. Frame was bent to put the car very low, and it is. Oval exhaust pipe is required and nothing hangs below the frame rails. Frame is 5" from the ground right behind the front tires and 6" from the ground right in front of the rear tires.

Car is going back to the chassis shop that did the 4 link/watts rear suspension for an 8.50 cert moly cage late next week. He will also fabricate the headers for the new CV-1 Pontiac cylinder heads. At that point its back to JHRS (Joes Hot Rod shop) and serious finish work.

I am working on a place to put pics, and will post that as soon as its ready to go. Thanks for the interest. This is a life long dream of mine finally coming to reality. I graduated high school the year this car was built/sold as new. Couldnt afford one then. Patience and hard work paying off.

Grew up a poncho boy. Dad worked as a Mechanic at a pontiac dealer here in Shreveport La. for 35 years. he drove home something different almost every day and he let me drive most of them. I had a 60 StarChief I wish I had back now, I loved that car. 389 2bbl powerglide I think. it was a 2 speed trans is what I remember. then I had a 67 bonny 389 4bbl. Man that thing could move. And u could watch the gas gauge move too. But gas was what, 42 cents a gallon at the time I think. Might have been less. I do remember a Grand Am he brought home that I wanted. Can't remember what year it was though. 400 4 bbl 4 on the floor. It would get rubber in all 4 too. well, it barked um in 4th. I think I might cry now. Gone R the good ole days. And now my boring story.

I was definitely a little kid back in the day, but I remember my dad taking me for Sunday drives up the New England coast. I remember all the cars of the 60's and 70's. Great thing is that they all had personality. They weren't just stamped from a mold with little cosmetic changes here and there. Each one had very cool unique features and of course plenty of power. It's definitely not practical with a gallon of gas going for $3.50 and up, but it still is nice that we can capture a part of history or in my case my childhood. And no matter the price of gas, I'll always fill up my classic to take her for a nice cruise on the weekend!

Thanks Kev. The pic is slightly deceiving though, that fender is probably the best panel on the entire car. :hammer: Someday I'll get around to starting body work. That will probably be about the same time I start a build thread here.

Wow that's awesome how did you get it so low? They're 18's right?

It's on air ride--that's aired out, ride height is about 1.5-2" higher, but it does roll around at that height--turning is a no-no though.

Those are actually 17s--they just look huge because 1) it's slammed and 2) year one sent me the wrong spec wheels so they're barely even tucked under the fenders!

Fixed that problem, though :) turns out that 19" forgeline ta3s tuck under there quite nicely when backspaced correctly!

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

(yup, those are emptynest's wheels! I was honored to even have them temporarily under my fender, hah!)

(how dirty does "the occasional sleeper surprise" sound?)Unfortunately there's no way to run anything but 18" or larger diameter wheels with the C6 Z06 brakes, and even at that some 18s won't clear the calipers.

Have no fear, the old 17" steelies and dog dish caps will find a new home on my '64 Lemans convertible. I'll switch back and forth between the 17s and the stock 14X6" wheels with '64 spinner caps.

My 65 with a Schwartz workover.

Currently NA LS9, 9 bolt forged crank, dry sump, Wiseco Pistons, K1 rods, with NOS. Baer brakes, Beilstein coil-overs, Tremec 5spd, Dana60 rear.

I live in Hong Kong and had this built for Power Tour this year. Im keeping it in the states and going to come over a few times a year for different events. Stay tuned.... we're going to start doing silly stuff with this one. Next up is a blower ..... not sure if it'll be twin turbos or a supercharger, but whatever it is we promise it will be silly.

Its got one of his bolt-on chassis under it. Once its done the rounds in this configuration we're going to drop the body down over the chassis and get it in the weeds.

Jeff had it at the Car Craft Eliminator on the weekend and did well....waiting for official results.

http://s491.photobucket.com/albums/rr273/vsefiream/My%20Fire%20Am/
The Fire Am was an 80's tuner Trans Am designed by Herb Adams a suspension engineer at GM for the F-body.
Anyhow, my car is an original 78 W72 400 4speed Formula that is going to stay pretty true to the 80's vintage Fire Am with a few modern parts. It's getting a 461 ci Eagle stroker kit, DN 5 speed, and just about everypart has been beefed up for SCCA CP class racing. I am hoping to build a streetable race car on a budget, which is exactly what Herb had in mind back then.

So what kind of time you put down? I'm hoping to break into the 13's with the cutlass sense I installed the posi.I have the timeslips from that night (10/27/06) right here in my desk. First run I made was the quickest, I had just driven about 40 miles to the track on a Friday night after work and only let the car cool down about 20 minutes so the engine temp was still plenty hot. No burnout, I drove around the water box and put the shifter in Drive and turned off the traction control and let it shift by itself.

13.862 @ 100.912 MPH.

Keep in mind that LACR is in the high desert, the elevation is 2700 feet above sea level. This track has a standard correction factor of 3%, so you multiply the ET by .97 and the MPH by 1.03. Quite often at LACR the air quality is a lot worse than the actual altitude of the track, most of the time the 3% correction factor is actually pretty conservative.

Corrected time and MPH: 13.447 @ 103.939 MPH. Bone-stock this is a mid to low-13s car. :smoke:

I've raced several of my cars at different tracks here in So Cal and the horsepower loss at high altitude is easy to feel and you always see it on your timeslips.

This car is as stock as they come with only oil and filter changes, no mods have been done to it. It still had the original Goodyears on it with 18K miles on them that were starting to get a little dried-up, I had to launch it easy so I didn't just blow the tires off.

I had a Best run of 14.016 @ 101 at texas motorplex I thank it is around 1800 with a bone stock 2002 ls1 4l60e see link below. I was hoping to get into the 13's but with 3.08 gears and open rear it just wouldn't get out of the hole. I am also a big guy doesn't help. I now have a limit slip if I can hit the 13's I will be very pleased.

The GTO ran a best of 12.055 @ 110.29 MPH at Carlsbad Raceway near San Diego CA on a warm August morning, best at LACR was 12.22 @ 108 (very good air, 2400 ft. density altitude).

Shot of the GTO racing a '64 Catalina at LACR, I usually dialed in the car between 12.40 and 12.60, always depending on the air quality that day:

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/10/attachmentphpattachmentid112127d119-1.jpg

The Tempest ran a 13.899 @ 101.85 at Famoso Raceway in Bakersfield, best at LACR was 14.45 @ 98.6 MPH. Told ya that LACR has bad air!

The 455 was built using all stock Pontiac parts including the cam with no headers. It ran on 87 octane, TH400 trans with 2.56 gears and no posi, went across the finish line at the top of 2nd gear.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/11/DSC008451-1.jpg

With the new LS3 swap the Tempest should easily run in the mid-12s on street tires.:1st:

All my stuff sees the track at least once, when the Tempest is finished I'll take to the track and make a few passes just for grins.

As far as the wife goes, she has had a few months off since we've moved (to Tampa) as I got a pretty good paying gig. I got her to agree that as soon as she finds her job, I get wheels. Then, a little later, she will buy the brakes, etc. I pay all of the other bills, so that's our deal. I know it's rather unusual, but I have a great wife.

Looks great, very clean, will make a great driving project, once you lower it and add some rims it will totally transform the way it looks. Look forward to seeing the updates as time and money allows.

Good plan with the wife, you are lucky she's willing to use her hard earned cash for the car!

Sorry for the late reply, been crazy busy and I talked my Dad into buying a PT 65 Chevelle that needs everything that I'm working on for him.

I'm wayyyyyyyy disappointed in that car. I watched the video of them unveiling it and how everyone freaked out they were so happy. You don't stick a shaker on a camaro, split the grill and pass it off as a Trans Am. If there were going to make a new Camaro into a TA they could've at least removed that dumb slit in front of the hood, the louvers in the quarters, and put head lights in it that actually look like they belong on a TA. How do I get a hold of they guys who did it so I can chew 'em out? lol

You should embrace it . its a first publick try ore atempt to keep the arowhead alive , i chear it on as well, im sure more acurate upgrades will be availeble. i dont like the new camaro at all , but a shaped up transam i would consider buying if the funds where availeble.

The Firebirds have looked extremely close to Camaro's for many years. The louvers in the quarters exist on both mine and yours 'Birds. So...while I agree that some things are to Camaroish, those things are Firebirdish. Maybe from different year 'Birds, but from 'Birds never the less. My favorite part is the grill. Real aggressive there!

yeah they've always looked similar but as a Firebird guy I feel a little insulted. Maybe the idea is an easily installed package to put on a Camaro but if that's the case then it's dumb and I'd never buy one. If you can't do a car proper justice then let it die.

The louvers on that car don't look like 1st gen Firebird louvers, and wouldn't fit with the 77-78 TA styling they were going for.

I just think they could've done a little extra to distinguish that car form the Camaro. Especially since they unveiled it at a Trans Am car show. Removing the louvers, remove the slit in the header panel, and put in head lights that fit the theme and it would've been much better.

I can definitely see that. I think they did a great job on the grill area, shaker hood and the front fender vent, but everything else is indeed straight up Camaro. Not bad looking though!

IMHO... That anyone is trying to turn a 2010 into a Trans Am(what looks like a 2gen) is a total failure. I can understand that there is some interest but why don't they try and make it look more like the 69 model instead of a 70-73?

Someone should mock up a nose with 4 headlights and the 69 style Trans am hood, throw a 69 wing on there and some 69 styled tail lights. The New Camaro is trying to look like a 69, not a later model.

Now that really looks good, somebody finally hit the target with that one.

I know the 2010 Camaro styling is based on the very timeless first-gen '69 body style, but adding the best of the 2nd-gen Trans Am styling cues to the 2010 Camaro body works very well.

I'd buy it.:smoke:

I'm going the PT route with my trans am. I'm not going to race but would like something that will handle good when I get on it.
To get a good stance:
Do I need to get rims and tires first or suspension components first?

Tom Welch
05-29-2010, 05:11 PM
think of the car as an integrated system, all of it must work together properly for the best operator satisfaction. I would probably start with tires then wheels to fit them and the car, then suspension mods to take advantage of the increase in performance of the new rolling stock, dont forget that pontiacs starve for oil on hi-speed turns so a roadrace oil pan by somebody like Canton may be needed. Springs and shocks will have an effect on tire and wheel choice. study a lot of pictures and ask boo coo questions and dont forget the search function. Good luck and enjoy.

I want a pro touring stance to my car. Eventually a nice suspension.
Like the stance of some of the T/A's on here.

Do I need to get the size of wheels and tires I want first or do I get a pro-touring suspension first?

I really don't know how you set up a pro touring car?
