Weld or Clamp Pypes X pipe

Should I weld or clamp my X-pipe together??
What did you guys do?

I welded the one on my 1974 Trans Am. I'm running clamps at the pipes that go over the axle. This allows me to disconnect from the exhaust manifolds/headers and at those clamps to drop the entire front half of the system. That way I can R&R the transmission as needed. Oh, I run a single crossflow muffler from Pypes, same configuration as the factory setup. If you have true duals try using a clamp upstream from the mufflers to achieve the same thing.

The systems I have built I weld them and make the whole center section removable with ball collectors.

On my '68 camaro I welded everything from the headers back to the mufflers. From the mufflers back, I used band clamps so I could easily remove them for maintanence or replacement. I have the Pypes 2 1/2" x-pipe system with the polished stainless violator muffers.

I have the Pypes X-pipe system as well. Also going to look at welding some pieces and clamping others so I can remove the exhaust as needed.

Clamps every where. Can you weld aluminized steel to stainless and mild steel?

Yes. You will loose your corosion resistance in the stainless at the weld and heat affected zones, but it will weld fine, you can use stainless rod at the stainless to mild steel interface (for tig). If you use a mig setup, check with your welding/gas supplier for the right wire for your welder.:)

If the X-Pipe is close to the transmission like most of them are you might want to use soame flanges or maybe some V-bands. Check out SPD, Burns, or deedsengineering.com
