I will spend much more time with all the results, etc here later but just wanted to start a thread about this years event and some of the winners.
Besides the regular autocross and dragracing event winners this year, Larry and I decided to crown a "King of the Hill" winner which we feel would best represent the genuine, best of the best Protouring Car at the event. There were several factors and a point system that we planned to use to determine the winner. First, points would be given for driving your car at least 75 miles to the event. Sure, that was a pain for some, however, to me, Protouring is about just that, touring, so, you gotta drive it to be a "TOURER" to me. Second, you had to drive your car on the cruise if you wanted to be in the running for KOTH. Again, Touring being a key factor to being a true Protouring car. Then there was a points system for the autocross and drag racings elements. Later we added a "Fit and Finish" element just to round out the KOTH.
After we set this up, Larry and I discussed the "what if" about a tie. That turned out to be what determined the winner, and for those wondering, the tie breaker, as per the rules written back in the thread about rules, would be the driver with the best autocross time.
After all was said and done, three hard days of racing, thrashing on cars, a hard luck award, and a first ever beauty contest that many had questioned, Kyle Tucker in his second gen camaro and Vinnie in his first gen camaro tied with 23 points each.........
Kyle was crowned King Of the Hill simply because he had the better time at the autocross, congratulations Kyle for a prize well deserved.
There is so much more to the story, like the fact that Vinnie's best drag strip time was ran 2 seconds before the cut off for scoring ETs and he missed being the winner of best ET by .01
Had he won best ET, he would be the King of the Hill.
I swear folks, you can not make this up, it was hard to believe it came down this close.
Add in all the thrashing at the shop on broken parts on several cars, all the bs sections at the Toy Box, all the great friendships renewed and made and this just could not have been a better event IMO.
Thanks to everyone that helped, especially those that went over and above to make things go so smooth. Most here barely know Danny and Yancy, but they both live here in Pigeon Forge, and were so much help getting things ready and working behind the scenes this weekend, Thanks guys.

Sounds like a great event. Wish it were closer for us on the west coast. I had figured it might be between those two cars. I also thought the white second gen (Splitter ?) would have had a good showing. Not even sure if it was there. Hopefully you update drag/autox times for those of us not present.

Quickest autocross time, put down by Kyle was a 35.4.
Quick ET was 7.96 by Bret at AirRide followed by Vinnie with a 7.97
There were some faster times at both events, but they were disqualified because they were on Racing tires, or not a protouring car. Jeff Schwartz I think was the quickest overall, but he was in a speedracer...hehe (thanks for coming btw Jeff and putting on a show, it gave us all something to shoot for.)
The drag strip is a 1/8 mile track of course and in bad need of repair but it is all we have around here to use. Also, we were running in the heat of the day, so not the best time to dragrace on street tires, but fun none the less.
We also had 53 or 54 cars on the cruise, plus about 6 pickups/suv/rollback/other vehicles participating. Thanks to Ron Huber, Jason's father for always being there to help out with the tow truck if needed, we always seem to need it.

Thanks again Bill! I had a great time, and thoroughly enjoyed spilling gallons of gas in your shop. :) A great time, and well worth the thrash and travel time to get there. Looking forward to next year. I need to learn to drive my car!
A funny thing happened at dinner Saturday night. I found this on my Duramax when we got back from dinner (around 9:30) at Alamo Grill:

Man I had a great time.
The DEMON did unreal , I was very surprised!
I sure wish I could have stayed for the drag racing, I think things might have changed some.
I went a 36.8 in the Demon and was blown away with that result. I know I had more but next time maybe.
Bill once again you stepped it up with this event. I LOVE IT. Count me in every year

What a weekend. I had a great time and it sounds like a lot of others did as well. I am writing this from a private mini office in the Atlanta airport you can rent for $29 an hour. Due to Ike they killed my flight yesterday. So, I had to find a hotel last night and today I’m stuck with a 6.5 hour layover. At this point if all goes as planned I should arrive at my front door in time to see Susan my wife I missed very much and pass out. I guess I should not have checked the “Play hookie on Monday” option during the RTTH registration. I also feel for Steven Rupp. I just got off the phone with him and he is stuck in the airport I flew out of this morning for the first leg of my flight. Nothing against TYS airport but it’s not my first choice for a 7 or 8 hour delay. There is just nothing to do but eat at one restaurant.
Back to the event.
I really had a great time and it was great to see everyone that came out to play and or watch. I flew in with Zbugger from California and we split a suite. The rooms at the Mainstay Suites are really nice and they were very accommodating to our group.
I wanted to say congratulations to everyone that took home a trophy. In the end some of the scores and times were really close. While Bill, Yancy and I were calculating the totals it was getting really exciting. At various times we had ties in several categories. I’m sure glad we added the tie breaker clause. LOL!
Anyway, I have much more to talk about but my brain is really fried. I’m thinking about booking this mini office for a couple more hours just to sleep in. It’s REALLY busy and noisy here at ATL due to being Monday morning and all the flights that were canceled over the last few days due to Ike.
Thanks again to everyone that helped out and I can’t wait for RTTH V

First off, Thank you Bill and larry again. What a awesome event.
We had some great fun at RTTHs IV. Good Friends, good times, good comrades. Unfortunately we grenaded the rear (AGAIN) on Project Prodigy on the cruise showing off for some Cameras. Nice little 7200 RPM blast, pulled second gear and capow! That car simply has way too much power for the C4 rear. That is the 3rd rear we have broke and now a completely different center is going in Prodigy after SEMA. We were disappointed as we had looked forward to competition with that one.
But we still had Project EmptyNest and had some fun. We did not enter the King of the Hill Competition because we did not drive at least 75 miles to the event. Also, a customer of mine with bad vision (67 572CI Chevelle) asked me to drive him in his car on the cruise Friday, so we did not do the cruise in EmptyNest either. So we had no chance at KOTH, but the customer having fun was more important.
At the Friday night party at Bills Toy Box Prodigy Customs bought the beer and Bill said I tried to drink it all myself, so I was hung over and late for the autocross Saturday morning! We did however get a couple autocross laps in. I am no autocross racer as evidence in the video, but we did respectable with a 38.3 time. Considering some experienced drivers were not doing that good, I was cool with that, but would have loved more laps. But ran out of time
Sunday morning at the dragstrip, we were again late, but not from a hang over this time. Had a friend in need and had to get him running which was way more important then our fun. So I got in 3 dragstrip runs before we had throttle cable issues. We could have fixed it, but after thrashing all morning on the other car, we really did not feel like screwing with it. We did get a 8.03 at only 86MPH coasting through the traps on the street tires on motor only. I think it has 7.70s? on street tires in it and 100MPH trap speeds, which will put it solidly in the 10s on the quarter based on MPH. I am sure on slicks 10s will be no problem, but I think we will be lucky to break into the 11s on the street tires. After SEMA we will try that 10 second quarter on motor.
Anyway here is a autocross video and a great burnout and subsequent throttle cable breaking on the 1 / 2 shift. Lisa did not get a chance to run, but was overheated anyway in the 90degree heat. So she will get her chance after SEMA
So anyone that did not make it, needs to be there next year.
Enjoy

I would like to thank you guys for putting this on. My wife and I made the trip up for Shades last week, and to the Rod Run and RTTH this week. WHAT AN EVENT !!! The cars are second to none, and I met alot of folks from the boards. The autocross was a blast to watch, but I plan on participating next year with a 65 Lemans that this website has inspired. Many of you guys stood around and answered my car questions and were super friendly.
I took a few pics, and will provide a link for those who would like to see some of the cars (sorry I didn't get all of them). If you have never been, don't miss this event next year !

So many people to thank I am not really sure where to start. My car has been rock solid for 2500 miles and decides to have problems on the first day of the event. Apparently I had a bad pulley and tensioner...after 4 belts and a number of rescue stops it finally got fixed early Saturday morning. To say that I was hot, pissed off, hungry and stressed would be an understatement.
I do not know why all of the help I got suprises me because that is what people in this hobby do...but I am still speachless. My car had problems on the way to the dinner friday night (it had to be because Zbugger was riding with me). I pull over and 10 cars stop out to help. Go a little further down the road and need to stop again. Another 10 cars stop and help. Bill holds the belt against a telephone pole and Frank (prodigy customs)cuts it down to 3 ribs to get me to the resturant.
Once at the resturant Steve (from twist machines) takes me on a 10 mile run to 3 different parts stores to get what we need. Limp the car back to Bill's; Ron ($5000 mustang project) helps me and runs me to yet another parts store. Work on it till 10:00 and I need to make another run but all the stores are closed. Ron came up with a plan so simple it escaped everyone..and it worked. I need to get back to knoxville and I don't have a car. Jim Mulvee( I am sure I spelled that wrong..has the car Hoover) throws me the keys to his truck. He has spoken to me for 5 minutes and he is lending me his truck. Did I mention that if was a 4 door F250 super duty...with 1400 miles on it.
Anyway I finally got back to Knoxville at 2:00am slept til 6:30 and woke up with a new attitude, fixed the car and had a great time at the autocross.
I could go on and on with this post, but Bill and Larry put on a great event and I will be back next year.
It was great meeting everyone! I had a ball!
I also feel since Jimmy Spencer retired that his nickname should go to Vinnie. Always a crowd pleaser ...you are here by dubbed "Mr. Excitement." I did not know a big block could spin to 8000 rpm and still hold together. You should have seen Vinnie, Steve, Jake running down the parkway on the way back friday night, but that is another story.
Jake, I still want to talk to you about your rear end. LOL
Steve I have your fender struts from the shoot...trying to decide if I am sending them back or sending you a check. I really like them alot. If the space shuttle had a transmission it would use the newest version from twist machines. Talk about tricky parts!
Rupp, thanks for the coverage. You made a dream come true. I had a great time hanging out Saturday and spending 2 hours in strip traffic. Good to know my car does not run hot.

Stacy, myself and the staff here at Detroit Speed wanted to take a minute and thank everyone for the Run Through The Hills.
Coordinating an event of that scale and diversity is a tremendous effort so first and foremost; Bill, Melinda, Larry and everyone else who worked so hard to make it happen need to take a bow.
Second, everyone who participated needs to be recognized as well. There's a large number of people who travelled a great distance to be there. With the cost of fuel, lodging and other expense associated with travel, it takes a serious commitment to make the journey. This includes the vendors who came also. The fact that so many people were there from literally every corner of the country shows how dedicated everyone is to our hobby. If RTTH is any indication, our hobby will grow for years to come.
And lastly, as someone who enjoys pro touring, driving pro touring cars, autocrossing, drag racing and everything else associated with our hobby, I want to thank everyone for making it what it is. The friendly competition among the drivers, clubs, vendors and everyone else is what fuels the progress of pro touring. That friendly competition is also what fuels everyone to constantly improve their cars to be better multi-taskers. We saw that this weekend. There were literally dozens of cars that are tri-atheletes that you could race, jump in and drive across the country and then drive to work on Monday morning.
That is what pro touring is all about and it takes everyone to make it successful.
We look forward to seeing you all at next year's event!
Thanks Again,
Kyle Tucker

it really wa a great event. My best friend from high school, his family, and mine all made it up to renew an old friendship and observe the event. unfortunately, both my project cars were dead in the water, so i drove the family Mazda.
it was extremely cool to watch some of the cars on thsi board do what they were built for. i get so irritated at watching these cars go together, and then just sit there. i was also amazed at how well some of them did during the autocross. i knew that with the right parts that they had the potential, but i never thought most would live up to it. i was extremely gratified to be proven wrong. tahnk you.
i do have a suggestion for another event: open tracking. around here, the tarheel sports car club, porsche club, etc will rent VIR, CMP, Road atlanta, etc, and put on a 2 day open track even complete with instructors. i thing that would be another cool event to do, if there was enough interest and enough pre-registration.
anyway, i am tankful i came, even as a spectator. i got to meet some really neat guys, see some incredible cars, and spend a weekend with an old friend and making a couple of new ones.

I would like to thank everyone involved with putting together such a great event, From Bill & Larry to the vendors and also the shops that bring there cars there and throwing them around for three days! It was nice to meet new freinds and see the ones that Iv'e met in the past! This event keeps improving every year, I can't imagine what it will be in years to come.
Although my white 86' Buick T-Type isn't a pro-touring car, (one day I hope it can be). everyone still accepts a musclecar enthusiast. That is where we all started! With dreams and a car and that is what it is all about..
Great job guy's, Keep up the good work!!

Even though I did not have a car there I really did have a great time and appreciated everything that went into the event. You all put a lot of time and preparation into the weekend and it has not gone unnoticed.
Bill, thank you for your more than gracious hospitality @ the shop, I went in a complete stranger and came out feeling like family. I wish there were more people like you and your family in this world, it'd be a much nicer place.
I was there with my buddy Adam (HectorM52) in the silver LT1 S10. I also want to apolgize to everyone for the drool marks on your cars, I can bring the buffer and 3M products next year to remove the stains. :)

Here's how cool it was. I was on the cruise to dinner with Payton King and he had just replaced the serpentine belt he had tossed earlier in the day. Well, the car seemed to be running just fine and Payton decided to make a fun little blast. Well, it started coming off again. So what happens? We pull over, fix it to get to dinner and go. Thanks to everyone, literally everyone, who stopped and offered help. Well, it happened again and once again we had around ten cars stop to help us out again. How close is this crew?

Yup. That's Frank doing some emergency surgery against a power pole. It's a great group of guys out there and all willing to help each other out when others are in need. And there was no shortage of this as we had at least six cars in need of a doctor over the weekend. I was very glad to be a part of it. And Payton, your car is incredible. I hope your minor issues get worked out.

LOL
I had the sheer pleasure of catching a ride with Jake on the way back from eating, because I didnt have a car and was one of the guys following along in the pickups. There is no way I can describe the ride I got either. This was also my first ever ride in a HOT ROD of any kind, and I believe there was no better person to ride with than Jake. Blasting down that parkway at insane speeds with the "Blue Hairs" running to get out of the way of Jake, Vin, Steve, Payton, and Jimmy was just indescribeable. And I have to tell you that car of Jakes that has his front sub-frame and his soon to be released rear setup, handles and rides beyond belief. As fast as we took some of those curves, it was beyond real how the car felt like it was on rails.
I have to give a big thanks to Bill, Melinda, Larry, and anyone else involved in setting this event up because I had a blast the whole time I was there. Like I said earlier I drove my truck and my wife and I were just spectators, but we had the time of our life.
The cruise in the hills took us thru some of the best scenery a person could imagine seeing. The spot to eat was also a great little find that was pretty unique. The food was great, and the chance to talk shop with the guys I met from the board was also a great experience.
The auto-x was also an awesome time. To see all those cars out there getting beat on in a big way was just amazing. We watched everything from purpose built race cars( Jeff Schwartz Ultima, which cannot be described how awesome that car really is) to Full on show cars (Frank from Prodigy, who beat the crap out of it also), and everything in between getting run to their fullest potential. There was great participation from companys that cater to the pro-touring crowd. The Detroit Speed cars did as expected, and put down some good times, but there were other manufacturers that showed up and put on a good show also. Air-Ride was out in full force, and as always did great. The Roadster Shop also put there Chevelle thru the paces and did an outstanding job. Jake also put his car (THE BEAST)thru the paces and did an outstanding job as well. I will have to say though there was some awesome cars out there that just belonged to individuals that did great. It goes without saying Vin put on a great show, but there were others from the board driving the wheels off of their rides.
The drag race was also a lot of excitement to watch also. The track reminds me a lot of our local tracks here, so we felt right at home there. To say the finish was exciting is a huge understatement..LOL
I believe that any vendor that is serious about this market should try and make this event if at all possible. You may not get the foot traffic of a regular show, but you will definately get an idea of how your equipment measures up to the competition, and will get word of mouth from real enthusiasts and not tire-kickers.
I also believe that anyone who enjoys these cars, and the pro-touring movement should make the future RTTH events at all costs. The insight I learned, and the friendships that were started, made this a wonderful experience that should be shared by everyone here. I was amazed at how when there was trouble, or a breakdown, everyone tryed to help everyone else, even if they were the competition. It makes me proud to be a part of this great group of people.
I have to also give a huge THANK YOU to special group of people My wife and I met and had the chance to hang out with all weekend. Vin and Tina, Jake and Kelly(Jakes Rod Shop), Steve-o(Twist-Machine), Jimmy(Hoover69), and David Sloan(Road Killer Customs). You guys were unbelieveable and I cannot say thanks enough for putting up with us. Hanging out with you guys was great and something we look forward to doing more of in the future. You guys really made us feel like one of the gang.
About next year as we was leaving, the clerk at the Mainstay asked about next year, and without even asking me anything, my wife booked us for another week next year(DANG HER...LOL) So yes we will be back, and I will try at all costs to have my heap there, so we can be one of the "COOL KIDS".
Sorry for the long post but I have more that I could write, but I have took up enough of your time. There is just so many things to say about this event and the people involved that I could write another page full...LOL

According to the gauge in Vin's new Duramax, ambient temps at the autocross track were pushing 111 degrees. We know that because, at times, we escaped the heat by hiding out in the air conditioned truck. On the DVD player was Vinnie and Tina's favorite movie: Talladega Nights.
As Ricky Bobby's daddy liked to say: "If you ain't first, yer last!". And that right there sets the tone for the fourth annual Run Thru The Hills event. Heat and perseverance were directly proportional. The hotter it got, the harder we all tried. Tenacity.
Vinnie's car, "Shocked!" came into this event with 10.30 E.T. slips, road course usage, and Year One Experience Autocross winner status. So winning the King of the Hills competition was important to Twist Machine as well as the Twisted Idiots car club (Jake, Vin, Jimmy, my partner Frank, myself and our newest idiot from Arkansas...Jay Wiggins--Bucks69). Despite an extraordinary effort by all, we missed out by 1.01 seconds collectively.
...And that's a good thing. It means that the Run Thru The Hills event format is exciting, challenging and competitive. It means that we can all build pro-touring cars with the knowledge that our efforts will yield more than just car shows and cruising around at the speed limit.
We fought vapor lock issues followed by a Howard Stewart Race Pump that refused to prime. That led to a dead starter which--with the help of Frank and Michael Serafine from Prodigy Customs and David Sloan from Road Killer Customs was replaced in a Sunday morning thrash that you would just not believe unless you saw it in person. Vapor lock prevented us from competing in the top five autocross shootout--a last chance contest to unseat the fastest autocross car. Vin made it into the top five in the number two position--one second behind Kyle Tucker and his second gen Camaro.
On Sunday we made it to the drags in time to make one run before the 12:30 cut-off. The time on the E.T. Slip? 12:29 and 58 seconds. Unbelievable! Though faster than Kyle, Vin's car ran .01 second slower than Brett Voelkel in Velocity. So second in the drags (by .01 second) as well as second in the autocross. With people's choice, cruise, and 75 mile points, Vin tied Kyle for 1st place. The tie breaker, as stated, was the autocross time. There you have it: 1.01 seconds.
I can't say give enough praise to Jay Wiggins (Bucks69) and his wife Steph. Prior to the event, these two were complete strangers to us. They agreed to meet us 75 miles north of Pigeon Forge to drive our truck and trailer so that Jake and I could compete in KOTH. Then they stuck it out all weekend providing immeasurable assistance at every turn. With heat, time and a demonically possessed GPS working against us, Jay and his wife helped us push thru.
Congratulation to Kyle Tucker on his King of the Hills win. Kyle, Stacy, and the entire Detroit Speed team make it look easy.

Regarding the King of the Hill competition, I don't want onlookers and newcomers to get the impression that the event is cut-throat. Don't let KOH intimidate you or prevent you from attending. Run thru the Hills is a casual hot rodding event--not a professional race. We all show up, share each others' company, and run our cars for fun. It just so happens that timers are running for the auto-x and drag race segments. And those times are collected. As such, it is possible to compare times amongst cars/drivers. There's a basic set of rules in place to ensure that when times are analyzed, the comparison will be equitable and on the level.
KOH is an event within an event. But it is entirely possible to attend--with or without a car--and have a great time.
You all have heard me use the term "fun squared" ...this is the event that I was talking about! I have been doing races and shows since the late 70's [professionally since 87] and have never experienced such a laid back, stress-free, pure good time as this. The Year One event approaches it, but Bills event adds the cruise through the beautiful mountains and relative absence [at least for me] of corporate responsibilities. His garage party was the best one I've ever been to in a dry county. THIS is why I work!
Thank you Bill, Melinda, and the local Pigeon Forge guys who made it possible for us Yankees to drop in a sit a spell!

Hello All,
Just wanted to drop a quick note and tell you how nice it was to meet and hang out with everyone this past weekend (RTTH).
Thanks to Bret and the guys at Air Ride for opening up a couple seats for a ride on the cruise Friday night. I have to say that was one of the best cruises I've ever been on.
Bill, you and the gang did a fantastic job of planning and hosting this event and I just wanted to thank you again for your generous hospitality all weekend. I'm glad we have been given the opportunity to become friends.
I can't tell you how impressed we were with the caliber of machines at the event. The part I like the best though is that all of you enjoy driving and having fun with your cars....that's something long over due in our hobby/business. I've seen enough trailer queens to last me a lifetime so it's very refreshing to see people who enjoy driving their cars more then polishing them.
It was good to see some old friends and make a bunch of new ones as well. What a fun night hanging out at Bill's shop with everyone chipping in to get cars repaired and back on the road again....and the beer was great too....thanks Frank!
Thanks again for letting us be a part and making us feel so welcome. We had such a great time we can't stop talking about it here at work.
Let me know if any of you need any catalogs and we'll be happy to send them out to you.
Look forward to seeing you all again real soon.

Well the trip was a little more expensive then what I had planned, in Montgomery my truck lost 3rd and drive in the tranny. So I was faced with the dilema of renting two trucks plus one dolly to tow the truck, trailer, and Camaro or ease back nice and slow to Florida. Well 1st and 2nd held out through the back roads at a blistering 30mph but eventually made the 2 hour trip in a long 7 hours. But it was well worth it I just need to find a 4l60e to put in the truck or have mine rebuilt.. or better yet buy a big ol diesel!!

Wow what can i say? We had alot of struggles over the weekend and with the help of friends from the forums we were able to make it! I felt guilty accepting help from so many people. Lets see ,Ron (Hemicuda57)and his brother inlaw Paul helped on Fri night when the VAPOR LOCK problem started along with Jason(G-Force) and his Dad,then on Sat afternoon They were right back helping again along with Jay(Bucks69) David Sloan(RoadKiller)The Prodigy Crew Frank and his son Michael. But my poor car must of had enough of me for the day...lol Then Sunday morning we started priming it and the starter went, I couldn't believe it!!So we pushed it on to the lift in THE TOY BOX(what a cool shop)and began to take it out and try the one from Steevo's car...it didn't fit....(really) I almost lost it!! Thank God they left me in the car on the lift!! I really couln't do much , I was 10 feet in the air.So they let me down and Michael(Prodigy) and I ran to Advance Auto Parts and get this huge starter which I never thought would fit. It almost didn't, we had to unbolt the headers and use a floor jack and a 2/4 to get the thing in!!So now we were off to the races....what do you know Vapor Locked again on the way on a one lane mountain road (possesed GPS).... We finally made it with in seconds to make one pass in the time allowed! So needless to say we had the time of our Lives!!! I would do it all again in a heartbeat!!Bill and the crew are 1st class with the way they run the show and there hospitality!!Thanks for everything. I can't believe I actually typed this much!

Hey guys.. as always I had a BLAST at the event... I feel this deal is the real thing, car guys/gals getting together to beat on thier rides and have fun. It has a grassroots feel to it and even though it's a competition it's still laid back and friendly.
This is why I push the books to cover the events and as long as I'm there I will insist that it gets the ink it so deserves.
I also want to thank all the vendors that chipped in to make this a reality. I'm sure it makes everyone happy to know they are regular car folk like the rest of us.
Oh, and Vinnie is freaking insane.. I really think he hates his car. lol
I have video that I'm going to get to Larry. Unfortunatly I had the volume set wrong and the audio is crud, but the vid is great (the little camera hooked on the car). I also have lots of unused pictures I will send to Larry so he can post.
It was great seeing all of you and I can't wait until next year. Hopefully I can get Penny there for some of the fun.

Kudos- This sounds like the exact type of event and cars that keep me believing in the genre.
I'd love to make it to one of these but, even sitting here, I can't help but feel intimidated by the level of cars, owners, and drivers out there.
But, it sure seems that the guys there are SOOOOO cool that I'd forget that their cars are SOOOOO much cooler than mine.
Do any of you remember feeling star-struck out there?

It's hard to be star struck when the guys there talk to you and treat you like an equal. The best thing is that nobody acts like they're better than you. I didn't have my car there, but nobody put me down for that or treated me any different. Kyle and Stacey Tucker are some of the nicest people you could meet, and even Bob Johnson was ok to deal with. Frank and Lisa are extremely nice people, and I wish I could have had a few more drinks with them. Hell, even Jim was cool. And I never thought I'd be able to see, let alone go for a ride in Payton King's car. And he's a great guy to boot!!! There's no reason to be star struck. The guys are all nice and willing to talk and hang out. Having a cooler car makes no difference. They're all looked at pretty equally. It doesn't matter if it's painted either. They're all damn cool in their own right. Just go there and have fun!!

What a great weekend!
First off, thanks to Bill and Melinda Howell for organizing this event and opening their doors to every one who came some distance to Pigeon Forge. It was nice to meet so many people who converse over a message board and to be able to put names to faces.
The event was way more than I expected it to be and I would strongly suggest to anyone who is on the fence about coming to future events, just do it! The atmosphere is friendly and there is no pressure to perform. It is about good people and good cars and using those cars in ways you can not do in every day driving.
Kudos go to Jay (Bucks69) who blew me, Vinnie, Steve and Jake away with his help and the generosity of his time devoted to helping out fellow car guys. Jay, if you are ever in the NY area, give us a shout.
We have a great community of enthusiasts here and this event is indicative of that.
Now, I need to learn to drive better!

It took me a while to pull my thoughts together and post since there is so much to say about this event.
First and foremost thanks to Bill, Malinda, Larry, Yancey, and all the others behind the scenes for putting on such a wonderful event with such a down home pull up a chair and stay a while atmosphere. Everyone was welcome at Bill's toybox for everything from tire kicking and bsing to repairs and the use of the shop. What a great host and a great place to hang out and have a beer. Thanks to Frank for the beer and his never ending willingness to help out those who needed it in a pinch.
For those who haven't attended this event before you should really make the time and effort next year. This was the third one that I've attended and they just keep getting better every year. Don't worry about your car making the grade (because there isn't one) or not being fast enough. These guys and gals bring everything from primered unfinished projects to SEMA stars and everyone runs and beats on them equally hard all weekend.
Although it is a competition for times and a few trophies thats not what it's all about. It never feels like a competition or race, it's all about the people first and foremost. No body looks down their nose at anyone elses car or times, it's like a big group of good friends. We all compare each others modifications and equipment both on and off the track to see what works best for each type or style of car, give encouragement or suggestions to one another on driving style to help better one anothers times and the like. Just a big ole good time for all with a couple of prizes for those who really deserve them. So don't be intimmedated by some of the cars you see on the board, come on out to this event and have a good time, that's what it's all about.
As I said the people are the greatest thing about it all. I met friends I've made there the year before and renewed the aqauntance along with making many new friends. Darrin it was nice seeing you again and I really enjoyed meeting Matt, although I thought we were going to have to wash Vinnie's car when he got through LOL. I had the pleasure of meeting Jason and his Dad from G-Force customs and all I can say is his Dad was above and beyond, rescueing several members from breakdowns with their rollback and never asking for a thing in return. Just a big smile and "Thats what I do, hope you get it fixed".
I had always heard that people from New York were rude and short tempered, but let me tell you the crew from New York will make you feel like one of the family. You couldn't ask for any nicer guys than Steevo, Vinnie, Jake and the new member this year Jimmy. These guys are as cordial as it gets and car guys through and through, always willing to help out and Vinnie with that mile wide grin and always a funny upbeat comment. It's always a pleasure to hang with this group, thanks guys for being who you are.
You don't even need your car to enjoy this event, Just ask Jay (Bucks69). He was in there all weekend having a good time and really came through the entire weekend helping the New York crew out. Met a few guys from Texas who's name I didn't catch but had a good time hanging out with at the toybox. I can't mention everyone but you get the idea, it's just a wonderful group of people having a spectacular weekend.
The vendors and their crews are just as down to earth as the rest of us. Always nice down to earth and ready to talk cars or help out, even give a few rides or test drives. And customer service from these companies is top notch as I witnessed all weekend. Bret's crew changing out the air springs on a members car to straighten out a problem on the newly installed set up at Bill's, Kyle and Stacey Tucker helping with advice on cars with their set ups to tune them in, and all with nice comments about the other cars there. Wonderful people with great products that they stand behind 100% and deserving of the patronage they have.
So if you haven't made plans to attend next year or felt a little intimmidated by some of the higher end cars, quit worrying and show up. You'll be greeted like family and shown a good time and some beautiful country along with a lot of really hot cars.
Thanks again to everyone for making it such a great weekend and for all the new friends, I met Allen (ZBugger) and contrary to all the harassment we gave each other all weekend he truly is a nice guy (just doesn't want anyone to know it) and whether he knows it or not a picture of his old black second gen, Camaro on this sight was the inspiration for my car 3 years ago.

By the way Bill,
I'm happy to publicly open mouth and insert foot. I complained about the "75 mile" rule. (Driving a minimum of 75 miles to the event earns 5 points towards KOH). It seemed unreasonable to have an extra guy on hand to drive an empty truck and trailer.
Well Jake and I unloaded about 95 miles out and waited for Jay and Steph Wiggins to show up and drive Jake's two car tri-axle gooseneck (no small feat). As soon as we hit the road, I knew I was wrong. Jake and I had a blast! We traded the lead many times on our 95 mile banzai run--stereo blasting some old Gilby Clarke. Tennesee highways are silky smooth and the skyline can't be beat. Felt like a mini-Power Tour. ....And we made two great friends in the process.
Oh yeah, I bitched about the People's Choice" segment and Vinnie wont that. Not sure how to fit two feet in my mouth. :guilty: I stand corrected. :fart:
And thanks again Jay and Steph. If you need anything--EN NEE THING--just ask.
Hey Steve...My wife [among others] tells me that I ought to be used to being wrong...I don't know WHERE they get that!:fingersx:
I liked the comment I read somewhere that this is the grreatest car club in the world. I agree totally. There was certainly NO pretentions about whose cars was fasterprettiercoolermoreexpensive. In fact I'm thinking that around midnight on Friday night any of the people who were still upright would have traded cars with the other ...just for sport!
For me, the best parts were, in order, 1. hanging with everyone at Bills place Friday and Saturday night. 2. the cruise through the mountains to the resturant on Friday night. 3. the Autocross on Saturday 5. the drag race on Sunday.
There are quite a few places that we can drag race and autocross...there is only ONE Bills Toybox!

I posted this on the pic/video thread yesterday, but wanted to put it here to thank you guys again.
Herb (Yelcamino),
Thank you again for letting Zach ride along at the autox. That was funny hearing him in the video. He has already told so many people about his friend "Herb" and his yellow "truck", as well as "Frank" at Prodigy helping him get the ride. It was definately the highlight of his trip. I heard someone in the other video ask the question "why does all the kids want to ride in it". Zachary is a tractor and truck little boy. He loves anything to do with trucks and thinks the El Camino is just a really cool truck. That's the first car he commented about when we got to the hotel, and then he spotted it again at the autox. When Frank told him to pick out a car to ride in, it was non doubt that your El Camino was it and I appreciate you letting him ride.
We both enjoyed ourselves very much. I really wanted to meet more people, but am not the greatest at introducing myself. Maybe next year when we return with our car.
We hated to leave the drag racing early on Sunday, but my wife called and told me that we had considerable damage to our home that morning from the remnants of Ike, so we headed that way. As of today, we are still without power, but thankfully everyone was fine.
Thanks again Herb and Frank. I will post a picture link soon.

I hope to be there next year, but my concern is from the tone of these posts that there was hugging taking place?!

Hmmm
If I'm not mistaken isn't that Franks head in front of the Keg preparing another toast?
I bought it so I had to make sure I got my monies worth! LOL! We might need 2 kegs next year!

Rod
Rod, I'm glad to hear Zach enjoyed the ride! I'm not really a kid person (I don't have any) so I didn't know what to say when you asked if he could ride along. It turned out to be fun hearing him giggle as I went around the course. It's funny, before the starter said go, I was 42 years old and Zach was 5(?) but the second I hit the gas I swear he and I were the same age for 39 seconds! He's welcome anytime!
On my next run a lady walked up to me with her son and asked if he could hop in... I guess word got around that the yellow Elky was the carnival ride! That's ok, I was having just as much fun as the kids!
That's very cool that the young'uns got a ride at the Auto Cross. The earlier we get them hooked the better!!! :-D

What a weekend. Bill thanks for the friendship and the ability to spend time at the Box each week. Sorry that I didn't get to spend much time with everyone. I didn't realize the time it takes to shoot a car for a magazine. I did learn alot on how a magazine shoot is done but at the expense of making new friends and talking with old ones. Thanks to my photographers for there time and expertise - can't wait to see car in Camaro Performers. Out if the 400-500 pictures taken I wonder how many will make it. This was a 10 hour shoot over two day - man I'm tire - Ha Ha.
The autocross was awesome but my car failed to pass tech due to the fact my Optima battery failed for the second time and the Auto Zone battery didn't fit in my DSE battery tray right and couldn't be secured enough for the autocross - Thanks Steevo. It was still fun watching all the others in the 100 degree weather. Couldn't make the drag strip.
I want to thank DSE for the great coolers that they gave us. It will be well used. Also want to thank all the others who worked or contributed behind the scene. Also want to thank Steve Crisp for the great conversation Friday nite at dinner. What a great time and place to eat at Carvers. Man I'm glad I get to live here all the time.
Can't wait till next year - you can bet that battery will be secure.

I believe there is a provision under 'The Man Laws' to allow for a quick hug, unless one or more of the participants is openly weeping! :look:

Aw crap, I'm sorry. But the word "projectile" comes to mind. You would've been way more pissed if your flawless quarter panel ended up with a giant reverse dent--or worse. Parking lot or not, the lateral forces are far greater than one might imagine.

Shoulda talked to me, I had our Optima trays there at RTTH with me for the various different Optima batteries also gave a couple away as door prizes.

That's a good idea for next year since we seem to have one battery hold down fail each year. We don't like to see anyone get sidelined. Dual throttle return springs are another critical regulation. And I'd like to see a driveshaft safety loop mandate.

Do they sell a stiffer return spring for the LS based throttle bodies?

tony, the ls-1 have a return on the tb, and the lokcar pedal has a small spring in it also

Huh.
My Holley TB has a built-in return spring, my Lokar throttle pedal has a return spring, and I've got two additional return springs connected to the cable. I should pass tech with 4 return springs!

Actually, his issue was a standard battery in an Optima holder. Unless your tray can also hold a standard battery, it wouldn't have worked. I went to Steevo for a second opinion as Steve's replacement battery had rags and towels stuffed in the compartment to keep it from banging around much. I still thought it was unsafe for competition.

We definitely saw an increase in the number of higher HP cars at RTH4 as well as an increase in competitive "spirit". Couple that with a potential second "road course" event for 2009 and rules will need to be more clearly defined for next year. We're running hot rods, not race cars so rules will not be overbearing--just much more clear and concise. We all do a pretty good job of building safe cars. And we do a good job of driving those cars within the limits. The dual throttle spring rule for carburetors is a good example of planning for when things go wrong.
Look for an official set of rules and regulations on or about January 1st 2009. With the exception of a road course addition (where speeds are much higher), expect the format to remain largely unchanged.
Bill has selected myself (a vendor--Twist Machine) and Andrew Borodin (an individual) as technical directors.

Aww man. After reading through all these posts, now I gotta talk the wife into this. Good thing we've got a 4-door wagon!
I got her talked into the Gingerman deal, but this might have to be a multi-event program...are I call it a double-Bill?
