Check out the photos of the engine I just picked up. The yard told me 50K on this motor. When I got home and removed the intake I saw this.
Just curious if anybody has access to ******? I would like to check the milage associated with this motor/vehicle.
looks normal. The area under the intake(the valley cover) is not really sealed off from the elements even though there are those two pieces of foam at the front and back of the intake on the bottom. Trucks also tend to go off road and in dirtier locations than cars, so the dirt doesn't worry me.
The oil in the intake ports is not uncommon. This engine seems to be using oil more so than others. This typically happens because the PCV system sucks oil up from the engine back into the intake. It's literally a crap shoot as to which engine will use oil and how much. You can get a catch can on the system if you wish to try and keep the oil consumption to a minimum. You should always keep your eye on the oil level of an LSx engine, especially boosted or heavily modified forms.
Pull the heads and see what the cylinder walls look like. Drop the oil pan and see how it looks as well. I bet the engine is fine. These engines are very strong. The piston slap/oil consumption issue was completely blown out of proportion. Some cars did have serious oil consumption issues that warranted fixing by GM but most people did not have this issue. Piston slap is also not uncommon on engines. It just so happens that american hot rodders are not used to it and believe something is wrong. Do be sure to read up on how to put the oil pan back on and get new head bolts. If this is you first wrenching on an LSx, get used to the term torque to yield. It means you'll be replacing bolts not reusing them. ARP bolts are not torque to yield and can be reused.
