View Full Version : Why Wont My F-ing Hydroboost Work?

I have been fooling with this for about a week now. First it was a bad master, then pump, then a bad hydroboost, today was leaky lines.
Finally got the car on the road and all seemed great for about 2 blocks.
First thing I lost power steering, went to hit the brakes and the pedal went to the floor. Then everything came back for about a block and then when I applied the brakes they stayed applied. O, then the pump started to howel.
WTF
Hydroboost, master, and pedal assembly are from an 85 GN. Pump and Gear box are from an 84 GN.
Any help would be excellent. I am out of ideas.

Did you get all the air out of the hydraulic lines? I have had to cycle the wheels lock to lock about 50 times (wheels off the ground, engine off) to get the air out of my system so I don't have froth in the fluid and the fluid level stays constant.
Good luck!

I don't know if this will help but I saw David Pozzi discussing some types of hydrauilic resevoirs seem to dump in too high and cause frothing problems. Does your system have a remote resevoir or mounted to pump? Just a thought.

I will try to cycle the wheel more. I did it about 20 times.
Pump mounted reservoir, and the fluid level seems to be correct.
Thanks for the suggestions.

you said you cycled the wheel but did you also pump the brakes before starting the engine?

Are you sure all of your lines are routed correctly?
I've had a hydroboost on my El Camino for quite a while and when I installed one on my Chevelle I used the Elky for reference when I routed the lines. Sure enough, even with a working example sitting less than three feet away, I had two lines reversed on the Chevelle! It might be worth it to double check all of your lines before you drive yourself crazy.

Yes I did. Everything with the brake pedal feels fine when the engine is not running. With the engine running, the pedal does all sorts of wierd things, gets hard, drops to the floor, ect.

I have stock replacement lines for a Grand National, they will only fit one was. That was the first thing I thought of, but after looking at the way the lines are bent from ACDelco, I could not get it backwards.

New Symptom. Everything works fine if I put the car in neutral and hold it at like 2500RPM.
Pump?

Sounds like you have a bad pressure regulator in the pump!

Found the issue. It was the spool valve sticking in the pump. I replaced the pump (Exchange) since I just purchased it.
All is well.

That is what I thought. Had a brain fart when I typed the last response, meant the flow control valve. Seen it quite a few times over the years. Glad you fixed it

Which P/S pump are you using?
