Anyone else listen to the premier of Death Magnetic live tonight? It sounds like they really hit it out the park! If you love 80's Metallica, you're going to like this one. I'll be adding this one to my collection.

I like the 3 songs from the album I've heard so far.
My Apocalypse, Cyanide, and The Day That Never Comes.
It definitely sounds like old Metallica. I got my tickets to the concert on Monday. I can't wait to see them live again!

My first and only time I saw Metallica in concert was 1985. It was Day on the Green in Oakland, CA. Metallica, Rising Force, Victory, Y&T, Ratt, & Scorpions. Great concert! I didn't really get re-introduced to them until 1996. Been a big fan ever since, especially/mostly their early stuff. I should have been listening since 1985. :firefire:

why don't you have S&M? the orchestra made for the perfect "5th member" and really filled in some of the parts from the Cliff Burton era stuff that just seemed to be missing- the Call of Ktulu and For Whom the Bell Tolls are simply amazing with the horns and strings and what not.

Glad to hear the positive reviews so far. I've not really gotten into anything they've done since the Black album. I'm more of a fan of their older stuff, Ride the LIghtning, Master of Puppets and 'And Justice for All".

can't wait to get to the store and BUY it and support good groups!

I love old Metallica, new Metallica any Metallica. Alot of metal heads that never changed called them sell outs when they softened up in the 90's and into 00's. Well they were right sell out every concert they had. I think they have done a great job of evolving with their primary audience. I first started listening to Metallica in Jr. High, saw the In Justice for All Tour when I was in 9th grade. They evolved as their audience evolved (well most of their audience). All there stuff is awesome Especially the S&M CD. I heard a few of the new songs on their XM channel and they did sound Ride the Lightningish... which was my favorite CD..

It sounds like according to Lars it is ok to download it illegally:

Speaking on San Francisco radio station Live 105, Lars Ulrich said: "If this thing leaks all over the world today or tomorrow, happy days."

Yup! I heard it. I tuned into to Metallica.com to listen to the extra hour(!) that wasn't broadcast on the radio. I dig this album- it feels like And Justice For All... pt II.
The first time I heard The Day That Never Comes I wasn't too sure. The second time was like Yep! Then I saw the video- AWESOME!!
On Napster-- Metallica was always cool w/ bootleg stuff (anybody old enough to remember Cliff 'em All?). When they were still working on "I Disappear" and an unfinished version shows up on Napster, they flipped out. I would too. So would any other hard working individual- It's called theft! As far as Lars' comment, that was in regard to some French dork work got a copy of Death Magnetic and then posted it on the internet-- it's theft and Lars was really cool about the whole deal.
Oh yeah- S&M is one of (if not) my favorite albums, although Metallica's latest version of Ecstasy of Gold is even better than S&M's version.

Agreed. There is nothing better.

This will probably only interest a select few of you, but I've heard the entire Death Magnetic album will be available as downloadable content for Guitar Hero. As well as rumors of a whole Guitar Hero:Metallica edition coming in the spring. :woot:

I've ignored everything they did after the black album. And the documentary they did a few years ago (Some Kind Of Monster) really turned me off to Lars and James as people. Kirk Hammet is the only one I like. RIP Cliff. I still love KTA, RTL, and MOP...but I'm hesitant to support them any further. They have enough money. There are newer bands out there that are made up of better and more deserving people. I would rather lend my support to them.

I'm sure the album is probably good. But I'll pass.

Well, according to the show/interviews yesterday...all of their lives have changed for the better and "cleaned up" to save Metallica as a whole since Some Kind of Monster. I never saw the show. I don't know the guys and don't really care what they do. I just listen to the music for what it is.

Entertainment. Metallica highly entertains my brain. :)

Well I hope that's true. And if it is I'm glad because it really painted them in a bad light.

I hope I didn't sound too condescending. I still love the old stuff to death and call it up on the Ipod every now and then. I was one of their biggest follower's in the 80's.

Oh and S&M is my favorite Metallica CD. I have the CD and DVD.

I watched the video the other night. I didn't really think it fit the song lyrics. I guess some more explanation is going to have to be given on that one. Everything on the album I've heard rocks!!!! It sounds like Metallica is back with a vengeance! Rick Rubin producing this album definitely put them on the right track.

I listened to it last night, I was impressed and very glad they got back to their roots, so to speak.

It was the perfect setting for finishing the mechanical section of my PT build in the garage last night....got the ebrakes working and now for the first drive tomorrow!

The Day that Never Comes....fitting, it's finally here for me. ROCK ON!!

Exactly! I love every album for what it is at that point in time. I've changed a lot since Ride the Lightning, so have they. They keep coming out with music that's relavent to where I am in my life -- they're older than me but I seem to be on the same track as them.
Don't get me wrong... Puppets at 11/10's is just right, but I really dig, say.... Bleeding Me just as much.
Rock on dudes!

I saw the video. It was really fake looking. They say in the description of the video that they worked with a renowned film guy and they were very pleasd with it. I wouldn't have been.

This is not a knock on thier music or the song. I love both but the video was terrible. So many wrong things as far as uniforms, equipment and the way Marines do things.

I know you can't get everything correct when filming a scenario of a military operation but it was so far from the way we do things in the military that it was a little funny. I am not sure of the message in it either. Seems like the video for the song should have been something other than what it's about.

i've been hearing the songs on sirius radio for a couple of weeks and the only one that sounds halfway decent (for metallica) is cyanide. it's the live from ozzfest recording so i can't be sure but if the live version is good the album version is usually great.
the rest of it just makes me think of the load/reload albums, but it's a HELL of a lot better than st.anger. that album just sucked. it's the only one i won't buy.

I'll pass on this album too. The songs are just too choppy and do not flow. I'm even listening to their old stuff just to compare. The old stuff is just better song writing and music to me. It's as if James is trying to do some badass spoken word type singing instead of just singing. The riffs are just very disconnected on this new album.

That old stuff brings back a lot of memories.

I still say the first 1:06 of Battery is probably the greatest intro in the history of Heavy Metal.
I still get chills when I hear it. Pure Genius.

They lost their minds in the 90's. I'd love to see them go back to the speed metal format.
Why the hell not? What have they got to lose?

Being I keep getting a message at the top that I need to be more active, I'll contribute my thoughts.

Bland and boring. I listened to the new songs and as I got to the 4th one, it hit me. So I listened to all of them and I was finally able to put my finger on what is/was really wrong with Metallica for at least the last decade. 99% of their songs have the same tempo through every verse and the songs all have the same basic structure. Going back and listening to songs from the past few albums confirmed this for me. There is no creativity at all, like they used to have up until And Justice...
I'll skip this one too, like I did the others. At least Slayer should have a new one out soon :)

WEll who knew there would be so many metallica fans on the board.
i haven't had a chance to hear the new stuff. but from what i am reading it will be worth the 29$ to go buy it. i have to say that the black album is by far my fav but justice or all and ride the litening rock too.

hey what about the new ac/DC black ice, the first singe sounds good too.

Bought my tickets for the 12/1 show with a package deal that includes the cd but I'll be going to the show to hear the old stuff.

Hard to beat the 8 songs on Ride the Lightning!

The great thing about Metallica shows is that they know why we're there and they belt out all the old stuff. When they came back on the 2nd leg of the last tour, it was like they were apologizing for St Anger and played 95% Black Album and earlier.
