View Full Version : Sorta PT, my daily driver build

When gas prices hit $4/gal I decided I needed something that got a bit better gas mileage. I searched for a while, it seemed everything in my price range ($3500ish) was either super high mileage or severely beaten. Anyway, a friend of mine suggested that a datsun 510. I wound up finding a half finished project car in my price range.

Specs on the car are:
rebuilt L20B with a mild cam, header, Webber 38/38
new centerforce clutch,
rebushed close ratio dog leg 5 speed,
Subie LSD with 3.54 gears,
rebuilt front end, bump steer spacers,
280Z front struts and brakes modified with 510 spring perch weld on, Suspension Technique springs,
240Z finned aluminum drums,
staggered panasports with new tires,
new interior, etc etc etc. just lots of new stuff, it just needed to be put together.
However, I did not like the color, and that snowballed into a major rebuild.....

Then I got carried away with the sanding and took it to bare metal and found all sorts of interesting things.....

So I got the body work finished up, and primed and blocked. The painting has started and is nearly finished. The car will also be de-chromed (all painted satin black).

Hopefully I will be able to pull down some decent mileage with it.

There is one a guy did a while back (can't remember where I saw it) but it was a green color with possibly mini lite style wheels but he had the mirrors half way down the fenders. I always thought it was a cool look.

a 510 is on the list of cars i want to build sometime.. nice color!

Thanks guys, I drove it around a bit last night, the dog leg takes some getting used to.

The color is actually Miata Mariner Blue (90-93), I was looking for the Ford grabber blue, but could not find the paint code easily.

I have thought about doing the mirrors like that, but am still undecided.

at home I have a link to a 510 build that is off the hook. it's got a rotary, jag rear suspension, fat fat rubber and really yellow. I'll post it later if I remember.

I found it now (thanks google!), real cool car, great writeup and lots of neat ideas.

I found my Grabber Blue paint code from a 70' Maverick.

I always loved the 510s. It would be fun to pick one up cheap.

If I'm not mistaken Adam Carolla is a 510 nut has one (atleast 1) deck out in the red and blue BRE racing scheme. Real sharp car.

Keep the Updates rolling in, please.

Alright, now I'm jealous. I was thinking of a 510 for a daily awhile back also.
