Great wknd for historic racing, some neat cars that I haven't seen before.
Let's start it out with some T/A cars, mainly focusing on the three 2nd Gen cars that were in attendance.Only ones missing were the Chaparral Camaro and the Jerry Titus Firebird owned by Mark & Linda Mountanos.

Canadian Sunoco-sponsored '70 Camaro...not a Penske car:

Mario Andretti was the guest of honor and was reunited with his 1978 F-1 championship-winning JPS car.Mario ran exhibition laps on Fri & Sat and you literally could not get him out of the car.He was ripping off laps in the 1:25 range and you could tell the man still has it.The crowds around him when he came off the track were at least 10 deep all around him...talk about rockstar status:

The level of detail on these old racers makes me think of some of the WWII airplanes we used to see at airshows. It's amazing they can keep them that clean and still run 'em hard!

Where can I find a filler neck like this? Or was this all custom?

Bingham,

Understand that many of these cars are really over-restored. The Penske cars were by far the best looking at the time which speaks to Penskes understanding of the business of racing & sponsorship. (keep those sponsor logos looking good and on a good looking - and fast - car). But rest assured, they never looked as good as they look now.

LOL...

Yes,these cars all look much better then when they raced in the day...

Neil B,
Chad Raynal's car is without a doubt the most perfectly over-restored car out there...it's actually a showcar that races!

PS:GREAT pictures Mary...some fine ones in there!

Yeah,I had heard that...pretty amazing,huh?
There was a great article on that car recently in either Hot Rod or Car Craft...some amazing history there and as light as that car is with the power it has,it should dominate.

Man!! You guys are so lucky to be able to attend and participate in events like this. I would love to see the big three go back at it in a new Trans Am type series. What with Nascar going to a Dam- generic COT platform, what is the point in calling them Chevys, Fords or Dodge's. I really miss the competition between brands.

And by the way, thanks tons for the pictures. Made my day.

I'm gonna' make it to a Historic Trans-Am or
Historic Can-Am next year !
For Sure !

Maybe the Trans-Am cars will run at Sebring again next year.
That's not too far from Georgia.

I'm pretty sure some vintage Trans-Am cars have run at Road Atlanta sometime in the past.
Maybe as part of the Walter Mitty Challenge.

And I think the the vintage Can-Am cars even had one of the Can-Am Reunions at Road Atlanta.

Maybe they'll come back to Road Atlanta at some point.

Dig the difference in rake between the two cars. Follmer and Parnelli had very different driving styles, which netted to very different setups (Parnelli liked the car loose thus the fwd weight bias)

I read about that in the "Unfair Advantage" .
I was just wondering if that was "the" actual lightweight car.
Is that the car that got damaged badly in a tow-rig accident and then got rebuilt as a second car ( or back-up car ) for the next year ?
So they updated it to look like the next year's car ?

While not about the Trans-Am, I was bored so went inside some antique stores yesterday (I never go look at antiques so go figure...). One had a bunch of old books and I found "Faster" by Jackie Stewart. A first edition, too. Paid $9 for the book and it's a very fun read.

A few years ago I cleaned by folks house out and found two very cool books I'd bought but thought I'd loaned out. "Unfair Advantage" and "Speed with Style." Also, both are first editions.

Thought I'd share my find ...

But they do have very extensive cages. One of the "unfair advantages" was the discovery that linking the cage to strategic points on the tub/sub will stiffen the entire system.
