I recently downloaded a bunch of iTunes for a new "wrenchin'" playlist for my iPod. Well, working in the garage last night, I thought I heard one of the songs play twice in a row - so I checked to make sure I didn't have the song in the playlist twice, and I didn't. The first song was SRV's ( :worship: ) "House Groove" and the second song was Chris Duarte's "Shiloh" - it's the EXACT same song. Not Chris Duarte playing a version of "House Groove", but the full SRV version of the original song.

Is Chris Duarte ripping off SRV? Did iTunes make a mistake or is this some tribute with a backstory (which I doubt because the song is titled different).

Smokestack Lightning by Howlin' Wolf is a MUST HAVE also!

And SRV is one of my all time favorites - hands down.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Buddy Guy for a project a few years ago... spent about an hour and a half with him at his club in Chicago. Man, the stories he's got. Sometimes I don't like to meet my heroes, 'cause they're actually just people, too, but my conversation with Buddy was one of the best afternoons I've ever had.

One can never go wrong with Buddy Guy or John Lee Hooker.

awesome stuff man! I did not know about the SRV and Chris Duarte songs tho. Must be a mis label or something. The two have different styles and you (I'm sure) could tell the difference.

Howlin Wolf , John Lee Hooker and Ledbelly are 3 of the biggest influences to the modern day blues and have always been favorites of mine and SRV has always followed well in their foot steps.

As for songs that sound alike, The new Kid Rock song that refers to Lynerd Skynerd is a direct rip off of Warren Zevon's Werewolves of London with some Skynerd licks put in. And My Sweet Lord by George Harrison was called a ripoff:hammer:

It is getting to the point that some of these artist should just admit to sampling like the rap industry did.

Buddy Guy is fantastic! Really love his stuff. I'll have to check out Howlin Wolf.

fwiw - (Mighty) Sam McClain is maybe a generation or two newer but has a great blues sound also.

Checkout some YouTubes on Tallan Latz or the T-Man. For an 8yr old, he's amazing.

I can remember seeing BB King 30 yrs ago and thought he was old then and I sometimes wonder how he is keeping it going ? He is always good to listen to and I can't believe I forgot to mention him.

John Mayall is another I forgot about, if you have never heard the song "Room To Move" you will be in for treat !! Chris Youlden from early Savoy Brown fame is also great. I could go to my collection and find sooo many to list, man am I getting old

I dig the blues as well, and recently heard of a group called Back Door Slam. They interviewed them one day on a local radio station and played a few tracks. It's some damn good stuff, check it out!

Did you know that BB can't sing and play at the same time. I saw an interview a year ago and he mentioned it. I had never even noticed it until he told it to the world. The next time you see him play you will notice that he has a backup guitar player to fill in the music while he sings. He puts all of his energy into playing and singing at different times. He also said that SRV was one of the greatest of all time because Stevy could do both at the same time!!

If you are a blues fan then it is just another reason to get Sirius radio. Sirius Blues 74!

I grew up in the backseat listenng to my mom's CCR and "Solid Gold" type stuff. When I was old enough to start buying my own music (1994-ish) I had graduated to Led Zep, Cream, Yardbirds, Who, Stones..... I wondered who hose guys influences were.
After learning that all of the Yardbirds and LZ songs I really loved were writen by the likes of legends like Muddy Water, the rest was history.
Now I live about 45 minutes outside of New Orleans in a little Mississippi town called Bay St. Louis. This place is jam packed with talent and NO is not far away.
Consequently I think The Blues Brothers is the greatest movie of all time.

Funny, Led Zep got me into blues too, for the same reason. Probably explains my affinity for JL Hooker & Buddy Guy. Elvis too, Scotty Moore influenced all those guy in England.

As a personal recommendation, check out "Arc Angels", I think they only put out one record back in the early 90's, but it's some of SRV's old band mates. I've been listening to it for 15 years now, and it just never gets old. Couple of direct tribute songs to SRV. Kenny Wayne Shepherd is a favorite as well.

If you like the blues and you like rock then there is no better band that brings the two together than Led Zeppelin.

SRV...Still can't believe he's not around. I went to see Bonnnie Raitt at the Tabernackle(sp) with the wife a good while back. It was a fantastic show. At he end of her second set she said she had a special guest, just out of rehab. Out walks SRV and he plays for two and a half hours. We will never forget it.

My wife and I saw SRV in Atlanta at Chastain with The Fabulous Thunderbirds before his fatal seat choice ended it all.

Here was a great show also(see the attached ticket stub)...SRV and the original 32 Ford man Jeff Beck. Johnny Lang was also there. What a show.

When I was in College, two of my buddies and I went to Lake Tahoe to work the summer. BB King and Buddy Guy were playing at one of the casinos. We went to the 2:00 am show and there was aboout 13 people total there. Sat within two feet of both of them. They both played like there were 40 thousand people there. True professionals.

Derek is good, of course, having an uncle like Butch Trucks couldn't hurt.
My idea of the blues is southern blues, and that would not be complete without a few licks from the Allman Brothers. Gotta love the brothers.

My user name on music sites is SIBLY - Since I've Been Loving You...the ultimate in heavy english blues, IMO.

Bill, the ABB is always good. I have no idea how many times I've seen them over the years.

I saw SRV once - opening for Robert Plant in 88. I kick myself passing on SRV tix for a show that ended up being weeks before he died.

Buddy Guy still rocks it live. Go see him if you can. Also, on tour right now Keb Mo and Robert Cray.

If you like ZZ Top you should check out Canned Heat, especially Hooker n Heat , you will then know where they got the sound from.

When it comes to trio's you can't leave out the Police.
