i have a 69 firebird that i am currently restoring, and i plan on keeping the straight six in it. with hopes of getting better gas mileage and because you just dont see people using them very often. my question is i want to change the transmission out. it is a chevy straight six in the car, i believe it is a 250 ci but i am not positive. i have both a 700r4 and a t5 sitting in my garage, if i could use either of them i would much rather that then whats in it. currently in the car is the factory 69 super turbine 300. how about that for a transmission! lol, it is a 2-speed, basically the same as a power glide. obviously i am wanting a couple more gears because i am planning on driving it to the turkey rod run in november. so i dont think that 2-speed is going to make the interstate driving very fun.

i am just looking for some insight, i know nothing about this motor i have never had anything other than a v8. i have plenty of parts laying around and transmissions, i would like to put something behind this motor that is going to work a little better for driving around town and hitting the interstate some. i would rather run the t5 but either is fine with me. just looking for help, hopefully someone else has done this before.

In the late '70s we swapped out sixes for SBCs without any problems.
That T5 would be a blast behind an inline six.

Cool deal on the six. Too bad it's a Chevy and not one of the OHC Pontiac six motors

ya thats what i am thinking! since i know the t5 will work i have to figure out how to use the hydraulic clutch assembly. i have done some research and it seems like there is alot of modification that needs to be done to make it work. i swaped from an auto to a t5 in my 88 iroc and it was a simple bolt in type deal. but i have to figure out pedals and a mount for the master cylinder. do you guys have any idea's on this?

so i am assuming this L6 uses a sbc 2-piece rear main seal? if it does that will be great because i already have that flywheel laying around :headbang:

i have pretty much a complete setup to put the 700r in. i have the converter, the tv cable, shifter and shifter cable. pretty much everything i need to put that in. i will have to make a bracket for the tv cable but after looking at the pictures in the other thread i dont think that will be very difficult. ill also have to come up with a trans mount and cut the driveshaft. on the other hand i would really like to have a 5-speed in it. i think that would be super cool behind the L6! but all i have is the trans and bellhousing. i gotta get a shift fork and boot, clutch kit, some kind of pedal assembly, all the hydro's i need, fab a trans mount, and cut the driveshaft.

You can do the T5 with a mechanical linkage, like the 83 Camaro had. Lakewood makes a bellhousing for 82-83 F-bodies with either the ST10 4 speed or the T5 trans. Here is the bellhousing:

That's what I did to use mechanical linkage with the WC T5 in my '88 Monte SS, except I'm using a factory '83 F-body bell. In your case, you can get the Lakewood bell, then use a factory F-body mechanical pedal setup (Z-bar, clutch pedal, pushrods). Then you'd just need to fab the crossmember and shorten the driveshaft. Good luck!

i dont want to spend that much money on a bellhousing. i already have the t5 bellhousing. i just have to get everything else. i think i am just going to make the hydro set up work.

tpi monte are you on tgo?

Sounds like a plan, budget-friendly all the way! As long as you can get the 3rd-gen hydraulic pedals to work in your 1st-gen you're good to go.

Yep, but I haven't floated into that site in a looooooong time. How is it these days?

i just thought i remembered seeing you on there. i dont get on too much anymore either. im kinda getting out of the thirdgens. i got tired of dumping money into my iroc that will never be worth anything lol. its my first car so id never sell it but still thats throwing money away. i mess with alot of different stuff now and spread my money out. as of lately i havent been making much money nobody wants to buy anything lately i am trying to sell my 67 and both my vettes..

on the pedals you dont think i could use the 69 manual pedal setup?
