Hi guys. I have a 4.8 complete from pan to intake cover to exhaust manifolds sitting on the floor of my garage with a rod knock. I am pretty new to the world of LSX engines, so I have some questions about this engine.

If all I have the long block with coilpacks attached, what other electronics does this motor need to run?

Can these engines work with non-computer controlled transmissions?

If I wanted to put this engine in a smog controlled vehicle, what smog accessories do these come with from the factory?

Well, that should get me started. Thanks.

Not a ton of smog stuff on these motors.. BUT.. If you are trying to do a Smog worthy swap, you'd be much better off start with a complete take out motor.

I recommend checking out the Hybrids & Conversions section of http://www.ls1tech.com/

Thanks for the advice. The engine was given to me for free. I also have some Honda Civic seats and a set of Flowmasters that were given to me. Thinking I might try to build a car out all free stuff if I can. Might take a while, but I am broke after my last project so it is worth a shot.

If you plan to run the EFI, you'll need a factory PCM. 99-04 from any vehicle will work. You'll also need a custom wiring harness. You can cut up a factory one and make it work or purchase an aftermarket one that made for your car.

Yes, I believe there are companies that make brackets so you can mount a TV cable to the intake. If not, make one. I would recommend going with an electric trans though. They really are great to deal with when it comes to shift point changes and shift firmness.

Couldn't tell you. I don't deal with smog at all.

Well, that should get me started. Thanks.

I agree with using a 4l60 trans...especially if you are staying fuel injected. The trans is real easy to tune to get it exactly where you want, AND the diagnostics with a scan tool is really good too.
