OK, did a search on this and turned up nothing. Couldn't believe it.

Anyway, I think I have the wheels and tires on my car sold to someone out of state and I'm wondering what's the best way to package these things up and ship them safely and conveniently. I can't see myself building a crate or putting each one in a box. Has anyone ever had to do this and can offer advice? Pics would be great too.

Thanks.

up until a month ago, Greyhound bus was the cheapest but not anymore. They charged me 225.00 to ship 4 rims and tires last week. Make sure you check around before giving the buyer a cost!

How good are the wheels? I shipped a set last week via UPS. I put a label on each tire. Wrapped the tire with clear tape to secure the label on each tire and away they went!

If the wheels are special make cardboard sides for each wheel and clear tape the sides to cover the wheel. tape a label to the tire. Wrap each wheel/tire in a trash bag and then clear tape the trash solidly with a label attached to the exterior of the trash bag. This will work fine and the wheels/tires will arrive in fine shape. The label on the inside of the bag is just in case the outside label gets torn off the trash bag. That will depend on how good you tape the exterior. Just roll the tire across the floor with tape going around the exterior of the tire.

The tire/wheels I shipped last week weighed 57 lbs each. The size of each package required by UPS was 27x27x11 to determine proper freight. I shipped each tire from Nashville Tn. to Michigan for $26.00 each.

Mike...just tires or wheels and tires both? $26 each? I guessed each wheel at 50lbs each with a package size of 26X26X10 and with each wheel insured it came out to roughly $130 total to go from Michigan to Alabama.

When you say wrap in tape...are you talking about shrink wrap or actual clear packaging tape? I had an idea that I would do a label on each tire and then tape cardboard wheel circles on either side of the wheel, then wrap the whole wheel in shrink wrap. Then I would let UPS put their label on the outside. Never thought about the trash bag.

$26 each wheel with mounted tire! Yes, clear package tape wrapped around the tire just like the tire was rolling. If you put cardboard on the side to protect the wheel then wrap tape around the tires in the opposite direction. Shrink wrap works great also if that option is available to you.

I would put 2 piece of heavy card board cut to shape on the face of the wheel, one of two sheets on the back side, and shrink wrap them.

Thanks guys, that's probably the route I'm going to take. Now I just gotta find some cardboard. LOL!!!

I've always protected the wheel face with cardboard and then used heavy duty contractor garbage bags. No problems so far.

I've used the cardboard circles and tape method a couple times with no probs. Fedex was cheaper both times

cardboard circles and shrink wrap work fine. My rims made it in one piece from Ca to Europe 2 weeks ago!

I try to always use a pallet to ship wheels and tires to protect them. there are a ton of trucking companies that will do door to door this way and you know nothing will happen. It usually runs from $200 to $400 depending on where you are going. UPS charges by the pound and overweight for wheels and tires and charges more for no box so make sure you check that out before you go that route. I have used UPS a ton of time but they have done some damage when the wheels are mounted and not boxed up.
