Any of you guys have daughters/wives that ride horses at shows. If so am I the only one that finds them to be absolutley boring? It was a week long show but just the 8 hours today was driving me nuts.

Basically about as much fun as spending 4hrs in the staging lanes to do a run, right?

Tips-

1. alchohol makes it better
2. make a contest out of finding who's butt is the best in english riding pants (exclude family of course)
3. add more alchohol

(have you ever noticed most boring things like this, theater, etc at least have booze?)

Oh ya, my wife rides dressage - the history behind it is interesting but to me it's like watching paint dry. I will say her horse helps me justify buying more parts for my car. I like to remind her that the ROI on my investments in horsepower is much greater than hers.

Well at least if you spend 40-50k on your project you get 450-600 horses!! The wife could spend that easily on 1 horse. Sounds like easy justification to me!!

It really amazes me how much money people spend on this boring thing they call a "sport". couple places had a semi for pulling there horses, it also housed living quarters for the riders. That was the best part of the show seeing all the trucks and trailers.

and of course the hot older women.

I wonder how many equestrians would say the same thing about guys who spend tens of thousands of dollars building shiny high-performance cars that never see a racetrack / dragstrip / autocross?

At least the horse folk are competing with their high-dollar rides and not talking about how cool their new billet aluminum stirrups are.

It's all about what floats your boat and how much you can afford to spend on it.

Dressage is one of those sports that is only interesting if :
1) You are a participant
OR
2) You know exactly how much of a personal accomplishment it is to be able to precisely communicate with an animal that doesn't speak.
It takes a lot of practice and time.
It's quite a self improvement hobby.

( But , You're right ,It can be extremely boring )

I like trail riding in the mountains better.
Lotsa' scenery.

I have painfully found that riding horse back wearing boxer shorts make it interestng. LOL

Matt, try to find other males at these events that might like cars. Reminds me of that beer commercial with the hollowed out cheeze block.

Not to mention that it helps keep the peace at home - when momma's happy, everyone's happy! btw, my wife likes to talk about how cool her custom saddle is.:lmao:

My girlfriend rides cross country and I really like it. However, the costs of a horse at the upper end is ridiculous. But, when i want to buy truck parts shes supportive to me so its deff give and take.

I trained, rode, and showed dressage for several years and yes, the prices of a good Warmblood is out there. Especially if you buy one that "swam the pond."

Dave would come to shows occasionally and yes, he was bored. I also got bored with it and returned back to my true roots ... cars.

My advice is to just suck it up and enjoy watching your kid do something they enjoy. The good thing about horses is this sport usually keeps 'em out of trouble.

Cheers,

My family runs a bording facility in our backyard so I guess I have no choice to like them. My sister does all the horse show. We gone all last weekend at a show my sister took two seconds a first but was the only one that was there both days so she walked a champion, then the shows before she took a second and two thirds, the show before that she took two firsts and a second. So we do pretty good.

My sis did dressage for awhile. I would go off and throw dirt clauds. It was more fun than watching.
My parents had/has a shi-ite load of horses. Tennessee Walkers, 1/4 horses, .... Now they are into Paso Fino, some kind of high stepping horse that is good for them in the mountains of NM and CO.
As a kid growing up I had to feed anywhere from 5-13 horses everyday and resented it b/c tey were all my parents and sisters and I wanted a quad s bad. They said it was too dangerous and cost too much. Funny b/c a $7,000 horse broke my sisters back but a quad is too expensive and could hurt ME?
Anyway, needless to say, today my hobbies do include mechanized vehicles and NOT the four legged variety.
FTH's.
