Now that I have the firefox web browser, can I uninstall internet explorer and get some more hard drive space?

Yes you can.

Many people also dont know that they can "uninstall" other window components such as messanger etc but windows hides these uninstalls from Control Panel>Add/remove programs. You have to go into your registry and turn off the hiding.

Uninstalling Internet explorer will depend on what version of windowa you have. The newer versions I believe that it has become and integrated part of the Operating system and I used to functions beyond browsing the internet.

Yeah, in WinXP I dont believe you can completly uninstall Internet Explorer. Although I can't rememeber what I did because it's been such a long time since starting to use firefox. I'm pretty certain that it's not going to be in the add/remove programs section. You can go through the reg. and see if you find it there, or, I believe I just deleted the folder marked internet explorer in c:\windows, lol. :lmao:

There are certain sites that are "broken" in Firefox - especially some transactional sites (banking, medical, etc).

I would suggest that instead of removing it, why not just go limit how much space it can consume on your hard drive, that way you have it if you need it, but it isnt filling your drive.

In Internet Explorer:
Tools -> Internet Options -> General (TAB) -> Temporary Internet Files (Section) -> Delete Files (Button) - this will do a one-time cleanup of your "browser cache"


Tools -> Internet Options -> General (TAB) -> Temporary Internet Files (Section) -> Settings (Button) - "Amount of Disk Space to Use" - on my system its over 500megs.
- this will limit how much of a browser cache is kept from future times if you have to use IE.


There are other items you can clean too, such as browser history, but that large amount of temporary internet files is usually the biggest part of IE's space consumption.

This particular computer has windows m.e. on it, when it first came out it was supposed to be the greatest but it seems to have its problems like everything else. I havent been on it since the night I first installed firefox so I havent had time to explore all the things firefox will do, I have used it for 30 minutes or so and I didnt get one popup and the computer didnt lock up once either so thats a big improvement. Its not that big of deal that I uninstall it but was just curious. Thanks, for the replys!

at work we just hid IE so we wouldnt use but everynow and then we need it for certain sites and like said above some sites just arent up to snuff for firefox like look at the dse site when im on my mac in safari there site is all out of allighnment youll notice whos compliant and whos not

When the computer was booting up I got a message that said internet explorer was not my default web browser and did I want to make it the default. I clicked no and it finished booting up. So Im thinkin what the hell...I did the control/alt/delete thing and see that explorer is still running so I hit end task and then I got the shutdown box thats under the start button, I clicked cancel and then I got a box that said the program was not responding so I clicked on end task then looked again and explorer was gone from the list and no more popups showed up. I think internet explorer feels bad being left out lol.

Explorer.exe is the program that is running to bring up your desktop. It is also the program that launches when you open "My Computer". Internet Explorer runs as iexplore.exe.
