Word around the campfire says they will be hitting the streets this month if anyone is looking for one. :secret:

Also, GM is auctioning one off here in Detroit at the Festival of speed and style this weekend. I'll be there on Sunday working the GM performance parts booth.

That's pretty safe to say. I think the first one they auctioned at Barret Jackson went close to 50k.

Yeah I head well north of 20k,....as in 25,000- 28,000.

Seems like the last 427 they 're-did' was only in the 16,000 range.(I thought the LAST one was called the ZL1)

EDIT* GM will not auction one at the show on Sunday. I guess they changed the plan.

The present 427 is launched in two versions.

The anniversary edition is based on the original ZL1 tooling with an "under rated" hp of 430. They say it should make closer to 480.
GM will make 427 of these engines then retire the tooling forever.

The second version is based on an iron block platform and will cost a considerable amount less which I assume around the 15k range.

As far as I remember this is the first 427 big block GM has offered in crate form since the early days of performance parts.

Am I the only person who doesn't get the thinking behind an iron block ZL1 edition?

It's not really an iron ZL1.
It's just a 427 with aluminum heads.( Like the old L88 'vette engine )
GM made plenty of iron 427s back in the late 60's.
They actually made few aluminum ZL1 engines.
That new Iron block engine is just a commemorative thing anyway.
It's part of the nostalgia celebration of 50 years of the Chevy big block.
Everybody has always had huge opinions of the old 427 so that's why GM chose to make two versions of it.
One in aluminum and one in iron.

Have no fear, neither of them are for me. We sold our REAL vintage 1969 (complete) carb to panZL1 engine for only $20K a few years ago. No way I am paying more for one of these. Keep in mind when I put my money down before PRI, they were only expected to be $15K!

I was able to snag a pair of them for customers. It was 3 of them but my 3rd buyer went away and at $28K I decided to pass on one for the living room, LOL!. In 28 years in the business I have some good contacts. I cannot disclouse my source, sorry. I do think one of the buyers is a member here though. I suspect he will post pics once he gets it.

project_hotrod...you say they're only making 427 of the aluminum block engines and then retiring the tooling forever, but how many of the cast iron engines are they making and are those a limited run too?

During the last meeting GM said they will not limit production of the iron version.
