Inline 6 and a 700R4

I have a 67 camaro with the original I6 and a Powerglide. I have a 700R4 laying around from my old set up and was wondering if I could just swap them out. I know I'll need a driveshaft, but will the trans bolt up to the I6? I mainly want to do this for cruising reasons, this thing revs pretty high at highway speeds, just want to knock it down a tad.

It'll bolt up and give a lot of extra oomph off the line as the glide probably has the 1.85 1st and the 700 has that 3.06 1st, 1.62 2nd. Don't forget about the xmember difference and tv cable.

Yep, it'll bolt up. You'll also enjoy a deeper 1st gear.

Just remember that in addition to the driveshaft, the crossmember will either need to be modified, or you need to get a new one. I got a super heavy duty retrofit crossmember from Summit for $159. Works for Camaro too.

Thanks guys! Thats right, I forgot about the TV cable! Shouldn't be a big deal to hook up. Also I'm probably going to need a Torque Converter, since the one I have Is from a 500 horse SBC that stalled around 3000. I'll just hit up TCI for that. I was thinking too, this trans should just slide right in with no trans tunnel, or firewall mods right?

Yep, slide 'er right in. Also, you didn't mention how you plan to shift the trans. Floor shifter? Or column? If you have either, check out Shiftworks. They sell conversion kits for the linkage, and lens replacements/overlays so you know what gear you're in.

thanks, I've been eying up shiftworks conversion kit, along with those new EZ set up TV cables from various manufacturers. They seem like a neat product, I remember what a hassle it was setting the TV cable on my old setup.
Also, about the detent so I can get in all 4 gears, where is it located? In the column? in the engine compartment at the end of the steering shaft?
Yeah, its a column shift!

In the column. My buddy converted from a glide to a 350 to a 700 and swapped the detent each time in his column shifted '67 Malibu.

Good to know on the detent! I'm right in the middle of my 4L60E swap... where is a good place to source the detent for a column shift? I assume get one out of a donor car is easiest and cheapest.

Hey protouring72, sounds like you are on target with your install.

I had a 700r4 behind a 194 in my 64 Nova. Loved it. My car had the Rochester carb mounted sideways. The throttle is mounted sideways and uses a bel crank. I fabbed a bracket for the TV cable that worked for 35K until the engine let go.

Thanks for the help. I have a one barrell carb and a rod for the throttle linkage. I was thinking of getting that Lokar pedal assembly to convert it over to a cable pull so I can add the TV cable, but i don't really see how I can make this work with the current carb setup. I don't know which 6 I have, the 230 or 250. Probably the 230.

BTW, this bracket was off of a mid 70's van. The van had a Turbo 350, but the hole for the kickdown cable is the same as the 700's TV cable. I cut it, flipped it upside down, and welded it. It just clamps onto the intake manifold. I had to shim it slightly to tighten it up. It really worked slick.
