View Full Version : My new 67 camaro project

I just got this 67 camaro about a month ago. The car was about 90% done. But as you can see from the pictures it was done pretty old school and Im shooting for a touring car. I Looked for a while for a project car but everything I found was pretty much shot and needed everything or they wanted way more that what I would give. I stumbled across this car for a really good buy and figured I could start with something in good shape and make the mods as I wanted to cheaper that start from scratch. Anyway this is my first build thread and would love to get some input from you guys who have been doing this for awhile. Thanks

I new I didnt want to run the hood or wheels so I was able to sell them. I went ahead and purchased a factory replacment cowl. Also got a 13'' brake kit with 4 piston wilwood calipers from revolution brakes.

Nice car! The body/paint look good by the picture. I am nobody to give advice, but if I were you I would do things in moderation. For me it is more fun to be driving than looking at in my garage. It is really easy to loose focus and next thing you have a $30-40K box of parts and a body. It looks killer except for the rims/tires and the cowl hood imo. I assume the car runs well? I would think the before wheels you need to determine how big of brakes you want. Don't get pigeon holed and held hostage by wheels that won't clear calipers you desire. Good luck and keep us posted.

EDIT: Looks like you got brakes covered and cowl hood covered.

I know these post are all of a sudden but just trying to make these in order and get the thread up to date. I know you cant really tell with the car up and no tires but I replaced the rear leafs with DSE 3'' drop springs. Also swaped out the factory manual steering box for a DSE quick ratio Box.

Well the car DID run well. It had a 350 crate motor in it and I knew I wanted to go alittle more with the motor so I sold the motor to my dad to put in his 69 camaro. That helped me get out for alittle cheaper since I bought the car semi finished instead of project shape.

Well now that Im up to date with the mods, My next purchase is wheels and Im kinda stuck. I really wanted to go with the dark theme since the car is black and I could black out the bumpers and chrome and go with black or grey wheels and I think it would turn out nice but im just not 100% sure. Black wheels either look really good or really bad. Everything else has to be right for the wheels be be black. I really like these TSW's but they are in hypersilver. But I could paint them or powder coat them. My plans are 18x8 front and 18x9.5 rear. Love to know what you guys think about the wheels and if I should go black or grey or just leave them silver. Oh yea, If I went black I think I would go satin black, not to crazy about the gloss black. Thanks for the input guys.

Looks like you have a real solid car and know what direction your going with it. Nice find!

The wheels you posted are nice. Not sure I would go with a dark finish. To much of a good thing can kill a car quick. Sooo...you might want to really think about it before you black out the bumpers. Only thing I would do is the ring around the head light.

What are your plans for an engine?

Dream68
08-03-2008, 09:29 PM
well Im not 100% on that either. I have a 64 nova with a mild 350 that runs pretty good. And thats pretty much what was in the car. I have always wanted to build a 383 stroker with a pro-charger, but the more I look the more people seem to say its hard to get a charged carborated engine to run right and to run EFI. Also my nova has a 700r4 in and I have really wanted to go with a 5 or 6 speed in this one. The car has a turbo400 in it now. So with all that said I have really been thinking hard about tring to find a ls t-56 drop in. and then eventually pro-charging it. But that is alot of money. But I will most likely throw together a simple small block and put it and the turbo 400 back in it for awhile. Untill I get enough money to build either the stroker or LS.

Hey, super nice car man, you've got a great starting point for sure! I think as far as wheels go for your car, unless you NAIL it with the right wheel style and correct sheen of black, it may look like it's trying too hard. Your car would look killer with a brushed grey/silver/gunmetal wheel.

Good luck, I''ll be watching it for updates!

I used this master cylinder for mock up. We are using it on another build and I thought I would see if I liked it or not. I love the fact that the proportioning valve is built in and that the lines enter in the bottom not the side. Over all pretty clean look. But im not sure if the full chrome is the look I was thinking. I was thinking about using the wilwood polished w/ the black lid or even the newer style aluminum with plastic res. I would love to know what you guys think or what you would do if it was yours?? Thanks alot!

Nice looking project! I'd go Hypersilver on the rims and Alum/plastic on the master cylinder.
How far are you gonna tear it apart before putting the new motor in?
I'd take Tom A's advice and do it in moderation so you can still drive it unless you've got the Fat Wallet!:dunno:

Im about done tearing into it. I would really like to put some nice seats in it that would hold me in but I can do that pretty much anytime. And the Wallet def isnt Fat Im actuall trying to sell my other car in the for sale threads to have the funds to finish it. Thanks for the advise about the wheels and all. I think ill try the hypersilver first since they come that way then I can allways paint them later if I dont like them. And the aluminum/plastic master is really the way I would like to go, but is the most expensive too. Thanks again for the input. Helps me alot.

I'm thinking gunmetal would look better on the wheels than hyper silver would, especially on such a dark car

I had the nitto's on my cts-v. They are priced reasonable and wear well, but do not stick very well. ls2 with a t56 smoked the tires (with traction control on) I would go with something a little bit softer compound

Well I finally got the nittos in and mounted up. I really like the look of the tires and wheels on the car, THe motor and trans is out so the front end is sitting way high but I think once the stance gets set with the 2'' drop DSE springs in the front it will be perfect. Love to know what you guys think.

My buddy installed one in a 69 Camaro. Said the install was pretty easy and straight forward.:smoke:

The customer is extremely happy with the out come. Said that it feels like a manual tranny car.

I think the guy's Camaro was making around 350-400hp total so I am not too sure if the guy would have any probs.... He never compained anyway! LOL

I have a tko600 that I purchased from Classic and it was by far the best thing I did. It was not too difficult to install (auto to manual) and the car is a blast to drive now. Much better than the turbo 400 it replaced. Here is a link to what I did if you are interested. I highly recommend it.

Thanks Guys, Love the feedback. I went to the Charlotte AutoFair today and found a company (keisler) who also sold the tko600 kits for the camaros. Seems like its a good way to go. But it sure is expensive, But I guess nothing in this hobby is cheap! Hope to have some updates soon. Thanks for the help everybody.

I havent done anything major recently, but I did weld all the lower rocker trim holes up and get the body filler smoothed over. It will be satin black. That way I dont have to try and match the base clear for just the rocker area. Plus it will give the car alittle more character.

If you don't mind me asking how much did those rims run you?

I got them for $1000, I thought it was a great deal for such a good looking wheel. It took alot of measuring and searching to figure out if they were going to work before I ordered them but so far so good. I am running an 1/8 spacer in the rear and a 1/4 in the front

dstryr
09-27-2008, 05:10 PM
What sizes did you order exactly? I'm thinking these painted black would be good for my car.

Dream68
09-27-2008, 07:51 PM
18x8 in the front and 18x9.5 for the rear, I know this works on first gen, but im not sure what the right size for a second gen is? Yea Black would look really good, that was my plan when I got these, to paint these a satin black with the machined lip. But now Im not sure I might leave them.

Dream68
11-10-2008, 07:42 AM
well I finally figured out the master cylinder and booster I am going to run. I went witht the DSE aluminum master. I got it on and also put a set of DSE 2'' drop coil springs under the front while I was at it. I used some Trim Black paint and dusted a coat on the engine compartment before I put the master on and ran the lines. Heres a few pics of the Engine compartment w/ the master.

Well I did it, pulled the motor out of my other car (64 nova) that I have been tring to sell to put in the camaro. I pulled it last week, cleaned it painted it and installed my new dse type II pump. March pulleys and spectre valve covers are on the way. Also got my trany back from the shop, every thing checked out ok. So I dusted some grey on it and its ready! So enjoy till next time.

For the lean problem, did you install new leafs? If so, was the weight of the car on them before you tightened the shackel bolts? If you torqued everything down while the car was in the air that will cause problems like this.

Im really liking the TSW's myself, Never heard of them untill I started looking for wheels a few months back but for the price and a nice wheel you cant beat it. The Offset is a 20mm offset and its a 18x8 in the front and 18x9.5 in the rear. I have a 1/4'' spacer on the front and a 1/8'' spacer on the rear. The 20mm offset was as close as I could get to what I needed so I just went with them and some small spacers, But I think it will be just fine. Thanks for the kind words. Just alittle update, I got the lean problem fixed. All of the body bushings had been replaced except the two middle ones and the middle left bushing had crushed down more than the right causing the right rear to raise and the left front to lower. I replaced all the bushings with solid billet alluminum, and it is within a 1/4 inch. So that is close enough for me. Plus I think all the new springs will settle out some. Also I got a new rear spoiler and front spoiler. But still havent got them on. I will post some pics when I get the on. My car didnt originally have a front spoiler on it and I got all the mounting hardware and braces but the spoiler just doesnt look like it goes on there right? Does anyone have any detailed pics of there front spoiler??? Thanks

I have a 12 bolt rearend in the car now with a 3.73 gear. The car has a th400 trans in it and w/ the gear and no overdrive the car tachs alittle high for a cruiser. But with future plans to do a LS2/t56 in the future I would rather not change the rearend gear and then change it back in another year or two. I found a stock 10bolt with 2.73 gear for a 67 firebird that is in good shape and is cheap. I want to just put it in for the time being but I didnt know what else would have to be changed for this to work. I know the u-joint will be different but will the driveshaft still work or is it different lengths? I probably wont put it in temporaily if I have to shorten or lengthen the driveshaft. But I can deal w/ a u-joint. Does anyone know what is different?????? Thanks

Decided to pull out the th400 and go w/ a m-20 for awhile. I really wanted to do the 6.0L t56 but it looks like im staying old school for awhile. Here is a few pics from today. I ended up getting the trans bolted in but the shifter was out of a 79 t/a so im either going to have to cut the hole in the floor back or get another shifter. But its closer than its ever been to having a straight drive in it. BTW I ended up going w/ a Center Force Dual Friction Clutch/ Pressure Plate and a Ram Steele Billet Flywheel.
