So after buying and selling and buying another and selling it, I have re-acquired the 85 Monte. Its a good/bad thing as its not rusty at all but has been aggregiously neglected. No bs, its actually a one owner, 68k mile car.
Its a factory 4.3 fuel injected car and has been sitting for many years. I am almost certain it will end up what I call the "Pro-Cup" look. I have long wanted to build a Nascar style Monte or Regal complete with a paint scheme "borrowed" from a vintage nascar ride. I have put up some pics of what I may do with it.....

The second project is actually my buddy Jim's 86 monte SS. This is one radical ride that has been cut up and has merely the shell to remind you want it once was. This car has 16" inches of setback for the engine and trans. The pilots seat will actually mount where the rear passengers feet would have rested.

Bought a pass side door and fender today...gonna hang em tomorrow and then get started on the patch for the rocker area behind door. Also picked up the nose and pieces from and ss so that project "sickneSS" makes a lil more sense.
Already have a ton of basset and aero speedway styled wheels laying around, so I will just throw those on there tomorrow too and get some pics up. 113 views and no replies, so I may just be talking to myself, lmao.

Thought about that too....but tbh was never a big fan of the yellow and blue combo. But a Dale Sr. tribute would be cool though.

friend of mine has a 70's torino in hius back yard, and i keep thinking about the nascar on the street thing with it. hadnt ever thought about a monte, though.
arent the bassetts a 5 on 5 bolt pattern?

MichaelMost of the new stuff youll find is in fact 5on5. But only recently did alot of the sanctioning bodies allow 9 inch fords and 12 bolt swaps into some of the lower classes (Bomber, cruiser, rookie, pure stock) so up until then 5on4.75 was pretty easy to get. I have had several dirt cars in the past and purposely kept a complete set of these with the right bolt pattern. However, with the plans I have for the car, making it 5on5 would be the correct way, and its a pretty easy deal. We keep metric/intermediate rotors on the shelf, that have extended, oversize studs with a 5on5 pattern. The rears are the harder part and its fixed with a phone call or a rear swap (Am planning on running a quickchange rear).
That torino would be great, there was one recently in one of the mags.

So Im adding a poll here boys. Should I turbo or supercharge the 4.3 and keep it:yum: ...set the engine back some and rework the crossmember so I can lower it in the engine bay too...or....straight up lsx this thing?:bsjerk:

For driveability with power and reliability at a reasonable price, do you use an LSx that has these things to begin with, or do a major buildup and turbo install on the 4.3 that was a weakling in OEM form? Maybe for this project you're putting a premium on unique, otherwise LSx wins hands down.

Maybe for this project you're putting a premium on unique, otherwise LSx wins hands down.Well, I am into the stuff noone else seems to be, so yes the 4.3 would fit the bill. As far as weak...Ive never heard anyone ever call the 4.3 weak. Ive researched it a little. And splayed main caps for a small block are the same.(one less) rods and pistons would be the same, and actually cheaper for a sbc(8) over the 4.3. Roller stuff is readily available and any belt driven blower (paxton, pro-charger, etc) kit for a sbc will bolt right up. So theres not really a cost factor that I see so far. The only thing I forsee is cylinder head stuff, as I havent found anything aftermarket for them in either alum or steel.
In fact, you wouldnt believe the number of guys whom Ive spoke to today, who have incomplete sbc sets of rods and pistons that I can buy super cheap. (As long as the rods are ok and not bent)
THanks for the input though....it will factor in my decision.
For the sake of argument though......the idea of a high winding:revto9k: all alum 5.3 in the nose of it wouldnt hurt my feelings at all. Now before you guys start on me about the ls1..keep in mind, the 5.3 is tons cheaper initially, which will save me money in the long run. Round these parts the lq9 (alum block 5.3) can be bought for an average price of 650-850 bux. An ls1 is still fetching well over 2k.:screwy:

You're of course right about the strength of the engine internals, I meant to say that you have to hop up a 4.3 more to get the same performance. I couldn't agree more about the 5.3, they're the bargain of the LSx world and still capable of enough power to be real entertaining.
