I wanted to get an idea of what different manufactures/brands of satin black looked like. Please post a picture of your ride and then what you used to paint it.

Thanks for the help.

There's at least 4 different finishes in that thread. Rattle can, Dp90 (like my car) and House of kolor Hot rod flats and some that used a flattening agent over black paint. That's just about all there is. really. HOK hotrod flat is the best looking one. Dp90 fades and is a bitch to maintain.

Im running Hot Rod Flatz.. looked nice on the test panel we shot. It's UV stable, not crazy expensive and they even have a flat clear incase you want to bury graphics or a stripe.

SEM makes a "Hot Rod Flatz" in a quart kit. BASF makes their Carrizma Flat clear (their site has a bunch of pics in the gallery section). I just ordered a color chart and informational DVD from

Hopefully this will help you out.

I have visited the HR Flatz site several times (still thinking about a satin finish). Some cars look absolutely flat and others look less glossy, but definitely not flat, flat.

Any one here have insight to exactly why that is?

Shinier w/ the clear coat?
Sanded before the clear coat?
Used a different gloss %?
Something else? :pat:

Well, there's flat and then there's satin...

real flat paint is REALLY hard to take care of. The hood of my Fairlane is done in a Satin black (SEM).

All of the products I mentioned above are more of a satin finish. They may call themselves "flat" but in reality they have some sheen to them.

true satin black is achieved with the regular base clear paint, all you have to do as a flattening agent in the clear to the amount of "flat" you want, that way you have uv resistant clear and paint protection, i have done flat street rods many times with glossy clear on the flames , looks pretty cool !!

Here's a picture of the satin blue and red. It also has two coats of satin clear for extra protection. This is the Hot Rod Flatz stuff.

lol.. no, it's a small plasic hood that you can buy just to do test panels. BOS uses them so customers can get an idea of how thier colors will look like. They run 30-40 bucks.

We use Sikens base black with Sikens mat finish clear no buffing. You have to mix it to desired flatness. You can do it 10% flat to 80% flat and has UV protection.

The Merc and Riv we did are 70%

You can see the riv on our site it has the same finish. You can do this paint in any color or finish you want. Very simple to do but you can not color sand and buff so your painter better be good or you will have runs. The way it comes out of the gun is the way it looks.

The best satin paint job I've seen:

I e-mailed him for more info on the paint so we'll see.

We've used PPG's Flexed-N-Flat clear to knock the shine off any color. Like Fesler says, you can mix it in just about any ratio to get the amount of sheen you like, and the distributors have reference cards that you can use as a guide to your mix.

Here you can see the tail panel on the Camaro is wearing it:

Not bad, this car has been painted for two years now and only a few small marks. The only bad thing is you cant buff scratches out of it.

^That is neat. I didn't know you can do that to any color.

Well the test hood seems like it would be pretty easy to clean. As stated you just can't polish out a scratch but you could re flat-clear that panel.

Another thread with lost of pics. It looks like the majority are done with a clearcoat/basecoat vs a single stage. A lot of the 2-stage jobs were either BASF or PPG. Check out the Ferrari and the Mercedes CLS55
