My old Camaro didn't have anything special, but it sounded really good.
I had a Kenwood head unit (I think they have better bass response), a Profile 50x2 RMS amp, and a pair of Pioneer 6922 6x9 four way rear speakers. I also had some kind of decent 3-1/2" front speakers that I ran off the head unit.
When I would play Korn's first album and turn it up the bass notes would shake my insides! (There are some nice, low notes on that album.)
It was cheap, but the performance for the price was incredible, and it didn't add a lot of weight or take up a lot of room.

My 1977 Camaro in its previous guise had two different show winning installs.

Pre 1993 it had a N/A 305CI V8. I had 4x10" Pionner subs on a 1" thicK sculpted piece of MDF bolted to the rear shelf. The rear seat area had 1" thick MDF with 4 x 4" ports. All gaps fiberglassed.
There was 1" thick MDF from the edge of the trunk openeing to the trunk floor at 35% into which 2 x 15" JBL 1500GTI's were bolted. This piece was JB weld and fiberblassed into place. the 4 10's and two 15"s were electronically phased for maximum output. I read countless speaker design books and came up with that set-up due to F body limitations. I was going up against vans with power cubes (Honeycombe arrangment of 4, 8 or 12 subs of 12" or 15") and cars with just 4 x 18".
The rest of the trunk area had two additional batteries, Hifonics Colossus, x overs, fuses etc.
Up front was 4 x 6.5 in the doors. Made from MDF. USD tweeter horns just below the bottom of the dash.
2 alternators and 4 x Optimas, all reds. I don't think the yellows were out yet.

This had great sound stage and 145 db. But was very heavy. (pounds and sounds)!!!!!!

In 2002 I revamped the stereo. Buy now it had a 355ci V8 and P600B Procharger.
Stereo consisted of 1 alternator, 1 battery Yellow top Optima, 2 x USD tweeter horns, 2 x 8 inch USD mid bass in the doors. 2 x MA audio 12" subs in custom enclosures where the back seats would be. In the trunk 1 X 1000W rms mid/treble 4 channel MA audio amp and 1 X 3000 rms MA audio amp.
150 db lifted the T tops crack the windshield and rattled loose lots of stuff.

I gave up when a VW Beetle with 4 x 10,000w rms amps and filled with concrete won a competition.

Now I get a headache with a F1C Procharger and dual 3" flowmasters.
I have no stereo at all. I may install something after I have 1/4 mile times or some kind of trophy for speed/handling.

I'll try to dig up some old photo's.

Wish I had gone this route..used the Yearone panels but was disappointed with the fact I had to buy clips, had no instructions, requires weatherstripping modifications and new window weatherstripping, the door pulles require door mod to screw in..the panels are nice once done and sound is awesome. I had to use spacer ring as that my focals were to deep for panel and door space.

I paid $200 back then it would have been more like £100 plus shipping. Anyway it is a nice piece. Make's the car look sharper, modern yet still 1970's Camaro. I have no audio in the car just wanted to tidy it up till i decide what I'm doing. I'll take some shot tomorrow if you're interested...

It could mount in there, but there would have been a huge gap. I had to trim a hole in the panel to remove the factory ridges and duct work.

This gave me a solid flat surface for the speaker and covered the hole I had to cut.

I would like to do splits in the door, but those door panels that someone is making is just too expensive for me. I can't remember who makes them, but they are sweet. It looks like they have an opening for a 6.5 in the front lower corner of the door. I am looking for a place to mount a double din Pioneer dvd player. On a 73+ console I think you could cut it and open it enough to mount it on an angle up under the dash where the console meets the dash. I'm not sure on how to do it on a 72- dash. Any thoughts guys????

Yeah that's them. I saw the price for the ones...$599!!!!! I can fab up some killer ones in suede for waaaaay less then that. I think some of these companies see the market for Pro-Touring and triple the price. It's f'ing stupid.

Do you know if anyone makes that housing for the dvd player that goes right above the console? It's in the pic of that sweet black & gold T/A.

What is a good powered subwoofer for a 78 Trans Am? I'm thinking about mounting a 8" Bazooka in the trunk.

There pretty much aren't any, IMO. Usually the powered setups sell on cost, ease of installation and simplicity, not quality.

Here's my little "project"...working on some 100% fiberglass kicks that retain the parking brake and hold a tweeter and a 6.5" speaker.

I have the drivers mold done, I pulled the first kick out last wed and it turned out fairly well...I did however get in a rush because I was antsy and wanted to see what it looks like.

I also found that I laid the gel coat a little too thick and that's why it looks "lumpy"...my mold is completly smooth and doesn't look like that. Plus the 19 degrees outside and 50 in my heated shop didn't help either.

This is still usuable though, a little sanding and filler I will be ready to cover in black vinyl. Going to be a work in progress, but it can only get better from here as I gain a little more experience with it.

Next week is supposed to be sunny and in the 60's outside so I'm going to dive into the other side and see what I come up with. :)

If anyone is interested in a set of custom kick panels for your 2nd generation shoot me a PM, I have the molds done and can sell a few now. I'll take pictures later of the finished kick panels. I don't know how many I'll make, so it's first come first serve.

1976CamaroGuy
02-24-2011, 02:20 PM
They come exactly as pictured for second gen, two kicks and pinch weld molding. These are for models with AC (you will lose the flapper in the passenger side).

They may fit non-AC models someone will need to verify that, if so I know you will lose the pull knobs.

Will need some minor triming and fitting but it's no biggie. The speaker hole is for a 6.5" speaker, max grill dia no more than 7"...but should fit 99.9% of grills out there.

Will clear parking brake bracket, worst case scenerio you will have to bend the pedal out a bit.

Here are some pics of the drivers kick and parking brake. As you can see it is almost touching.

The way to remedy this and still keep the brake is to:

Bend the parking brake out away from the kick

or

Re-drill the two holes at the front of the brake mount in the firewall, and shim the rear support bracket (that goes through kick) to the right about an inch

Me personally bending the brake pedal out will suffice for me.

Here's how you can baffle the kick panel speaker from behind and protect it from moisture very easily.

Puchase a Metra 6 x 9 baffle kit model # 81-6900 (I got mine off eBay)

Empty Pocket area that speaker magnet and basket will reside in, it drains from the cowl area.

They are kind of a soft flexible plastic a little thicker than a bleach bottle, but same slick "feel", you can add some sound deadening on the inside.

Yes please post pics after you get them in :)

I just put in a (what I think is great) system in my '78 TA. In dash head/receiver/amp unit is Sony MEX XB100 BT, 4 X 100 watts, CD, blue tooth, plays mp3 songs right from a flash drive. rear deck speakers are 6 X 9 inch Infinity Kappa 693.11i There is no place in my doors to install speakers so I cut holes in each side near the front of the center console and installed 4 inch Kenwood KFC 1095 PS . Wire is huge Monster Cable. Great big sound. Problems: my center map pocket won't fit anymore - it hits the big magnets on the back of the Kenwoods. Also, I need to install some Crutchfield foam speaker box/baffles around the Kenwoods to give them something to "work against". Also, I ordered a new blank map pocket face plate from Firebird Central
