How to powdercoat over chrome?

But, how do I paint or powdercoat over chrome? I have some small bonnet air breathers for my 3x2 setup for my 348. But I don't like them chrome, I want them black so I can pinstripe them. Advice that really works?

i had not so nice chrome on my bonnies bumpers so i took sandpaper and a da and roughed it up.. i painted them rustoleum silver for that flat silver look and it worked great!.. they are holding up well also.

so break out that elbow grease..

One thing that may be a PITA is that they are louvered. But that will help I guess!

If you were going to powder coat it just get it glass beaded and go to town.

From a powder coating website:

What if my parts are chrome plated when I bring them to you?
If your parts are chrome plated, we will sandblast the top layer of chrome away, leaving the copper and nickel layers. We will then check the part and the integrity of the remaining layers by pre-baking. Doing this will make sure the remaining layers of copper and nickel are well adhered to the substrate.
Providing that the sandblasting and oven temperatures don’t cause ‘blistering’, or lifting of the copper and nickel, we will then powder coat right over it.
If the remaining chrome plating (copper and nickel) do blister, we are forced to have the parts reverse plated to remove all platings and back to bare metal. Blistering occurs less than 10% of the time, so we do not suggest spending the money for the reverse plating process until we have checked the parts to see if that process is necessary.

Have a chrome shop decrome them. If they blast long enough to take a layer of chrome off I would think it might damage the part.

I've powdercoated right over shiny chrome... was curious about this same question... and it came out great. Just make sure it's clean and not rusty. I cooked some chrome valve covers satin black and it stuck like crazy.

Thanks guys! I will give it a whirl! They are just chapie's so I don't want to spend the cash to have them dechromed.

I just powdercoated my brand new foose legend wheels the other day. I made the spokes black, and taped off what i wanted to leave chrome. I took a gray scotchbrite pad to barely scuff the chrome but give the powder something to "bite". They look great, now we'll see how long they last.
Only a cell phone picture, but you get the idea.
